  1. What on earth does that even mean? Who is worse at playing wing for us? Unfortunately Goodwin is continuing with the experiment due to his stubbornness. As soon as we play a half decent side with speed on the wings, you'll see why playing Dom there is such a ridiculous thing.
  2. I think you’re misunderstanding my general view. His sole position should be inside mid, but I wouldn’t have him ahead of any of our current players rolling through there. Right now I’d have him playing inside mid at Casey for depth. My confusion and frustration comes from the stubbornness that Goodwin displays by playing him in the senior team on a wing. A position in which you need to play runners/ball users. Not extractor/ball winners who are slow and turn the ball over.
  3. Lol, of course you doubt it. I’ll remember this post.
  4. He had a stellar year in his first year for us but he played solely as an inside mid under Roos which is his jam. The way Goodwin uses him now has me bewildered. It'd be like playing Matt Crouch or Tom Mitchell on a wing. It makes no sense whatsoever.
  5. Positive to win again last night with a few individual standouts. Enjoying that Goodwin is now sticking with the taller forward-line, clearly it's paying dividends. Really nice to see others bob up in the absence of Hogan and Petracca. Neither of whom had a big influence on the game when it was in the balance. Trac was very quiet, not sure why Goody didn't roll him through the midfield mix to get him into the game. Our forward-half game is as good as Richmonds and many stats have us close to number one in that area. However, I refuse to get overly excited for a couple of reasons. Both games against Hawthorn and Richmond, we were made to pay due to our inefficiency going forward and it continues to haunt us. Even against the lowly suns, the amount of times we went inside with little to no care, only to see the ball ping out and go coast to coast into the suns forward line was concerning. If the inefficiency continues in that manner, we're not going to have a lot of fun against any half decent side. So whilst wins are good and percentage is important, I am yet to be convinced that we can match it against the better sides inside the eight. I could name six to seven players who were constantly butchering the ball going forward. Whether it's banging it on the boot aimlessly or kicking to the wrong spots, it needs to be addressed. Trac, Brayshaw, Harmes, ANB, Tyson, Melksham and even Jones just weren't using the ball well enough. I can cop a handful having an off day, but not an entire midfield/half forward unit. ANB and Tyson continue to butcher real opportunities. If Garlett has a good game, I want him in for ANB and Viney in for Tyson. Seriously, I have zero idea what Goodwin is seeing in Dom atm. So insignificant.
  6. Bump. Only a matter of time before Goodwin makes the change. It's quite frustrating really. It allows for the Tyson defenders to point at the fact that he continues to play, even though in my eyes and the eyes of many others, he is utterly insignificant playing on the wing with his skill-set. However, like Garland in the past and others over the journey, there's only so much a coach can handle when a player isn't offering enough consistently. Would love someone to tell me how well he played last night? Had a real pearler of a game didn't he?
  7. I was waiting for someone to tag me when Tyson kicked to space for T-Mac. But then he made two mistakes that directly resulted in Gold Coast goals so nahhhh.
  8. Weird thread. Both differing in skill-sets and neither of them are well rounded yet. Petracca is clearly more dynamic. But when they’ve hit 100 games together with Oliver, and Viney is close to 150 our midfield is going to be pretty crazy. That’s all I care about.
  9. Preparing a midfielder for AFL is very different to preparing a key position player. That’s not even taking into account the fact that Tom Mac had much more of a pre-season than Viney, played the AFL X game and one JLT game. Given the fact that he’s the best runner at the club, it’s easy to see why Tom could come back in and have some sort of an impact. In fact, there wouldn’t be many players in the AFL that could have had the same impact as he did in his comeback game against Essendon. Viney is a midfielder, was off-legs for much of the pre-season and doesn’t have the natural tank that Tom has. His position is also so much more demanding at AFL level. He might be training with the main group, but there’s no way I see him playing AFL this week against a Gold Coast side that’s not much chop. He needs to build minutes at the lower level. We’ve learnt once about bringing him back too early. There’s no way we make that mistake again.
  10. Probably trying to make up for the fumbles, missed targets and mistakes he made during the game.
  11. Weideman is in the unique position whereby his influence on games individually won’t be judged as harshly due to the structural flexibility we’re afforded when he plays. At the moment it’s working a treat. Weed provides Gawn the rest he needs which is unbelievably important. Gawn becomes a super threat up forward also when Hoges is roaming up the field and T-Mac Is playing forward. Weed playing forward also gives us the licence to play Tom Mac in a number of positions. He becomes the ultimate swingman which is a massive headache for the oppo. I think it changes our look completely and is suited to the way we play. We’re not blessed with super skilled players and we struggle to hit targets going forward. So having a taller forward line is much more conducive to that style of play.
  12. Lol, nice one Wrecker. He's got to be one of the most ineffective "prolific" ball winners within the AFL. Numbers mean so little when you are doing so much wrong when you dispose of it. I still can't understand why some posters don't understand that concept when quoting a player on his possession count. So he disposed of it at 78% efficiency? I have a few questions. Taking aways handballs firstly. Of the targets he hit by foot, how many were under 20 metres to a free player? And how many were under pressure? How many of his 30 + metre kicks hit their target? Or how many were kicked to the advantage of his team mate? Or how many were kicked directly to the opposition? How many of his inside 50's were of value?
  13. It's simply because he refuses to use his right side. Whether that be handball or kick. I mean, clearly he doesn't possess a 'right' side, but on so many occasions he could make a handball on his right but decides to keep trying to get in a better position with his left, by which time he is caught. Do not rate him one iota right now.
  14. Happy to provide some balance to the glossy, happy-go-lucky supporter posts Jumbo, thanks for the invitation. : ) Yeh, was a solid win with a number of positives to come out of the game. The main one imo being Brayshaw's game in the guts. He plays his best footy there and is of most value to the team there. Kicking and decision making needs some work, but I have faith that he's the kind of player that will eventually become a composed user, like Jones became later in his career. Those who follow my commentary on Oscar will be happy to know that I thought he had another solid game. Couple of scary moments where for some odd reason he'll pick a loose ball up believing he has half a day to dispose of it. Inevitably, he is pinged for holding the ball. Enjoying that he's generally making genuine spoils at contests and is even taking a couple of quality intercept marks per game. Really good signs for the juvenile giraffe. T-Mac's inclusion just changes the look of our side in such a positive way. Such a weapon to have and it takes pressure off Weed so that he can go about his business, play some AFL minutes and not feel like he has to be the 'main man'. Goody is playing fewer players through that midfield mix now which is also helping us big time both with Gawn's connection and continuity with the same group playing through there. Negatives for me was our clear inability to bury them. Interesting that nobody has commented on the fact that St Kilda didn't have a bench for the last half of the last quarter and we didn't kick a goal from 12 minutes to go in the last. Yeh, I get that we're fatigued. But again it came down to inefficiency going inside 50 and highlighted again an area of weakness. Also, ANB and Tyson are still two players that we're 'carrying' imo. Both playing in positions they shouldn't be and irrespective of Dom's numbers, he's not doing any damage to the opposition whatsover. One difficult goal on an angle doesn't make up for the countless mis-kicks, turnovers and holding the balls he gets during a game. I really don't know what Goodwin and co see in him playing there. Looking forward to next week and young Jack's return.
  15. When you say “involved in a lot of good scoring chains”, what exactly are you saying? Clearances can be good if they’re effective. But if you’re part of a scoring chain, that really doesn’t mean anything unless you’ve produced something out of the ordinary. An elementary handball to a player in space is not something out of the ordinary for example. Dom can do all those things, as one would only expect at this level. But he is not in any way damaging. And he makes far too many mistakes. I’m keen to watch regardless, but I imagine my thoughts won’t be any different to what they were at the game on Sunday.
  16. Everyone’s is different. I’d rather look at our core who will play the majority of games going forward and look at which other positions are up for grabs.

  18. Good thread. It'll always be in a state of flux. As I’ve said countless times, inside mids playing stop gap roles, (ANB and Tyson) is not an answer going forward. These guys might be playing there now, but over the next couple of years, our core will stay the same and we’ll keep adding jigsaw pieces like we’ve done with Hibberd, Lever, Spargo and Fritsch etc. Vince and Lewis were needed for experience and leadership, but their positions will be up for grabs over the next year or so. I’d rather outline the core of a 22 and leave some positions open that will be filled over the next two to three seasons. B Jetta O Mac HB Hibberd Lever Salem C Hunt Viney HF Spargo Hogan FF Garlett Weideman Petracca FOLL Gawn Oliver Brayshaw INT T - Mac Jones Obvs there are a lot of gaps with many players vying for spots. Melksham, Fritsch, ANB and Hannan are all jostling for that half forward role. None of them have announced themselves though, with only Fritsch being the one that excites me most. I also think he has the potential to play wing depending on his running capacity going forward. I believe that over the next year or so we need to target a player who is suited to a wing. A hard running skilled player. I’ve put Hunt on one wing for speed. We need more running power and players who can genuinely break games open with their run as our midfield is very one-paced and we’ve been cut up by teams through that area of the ground on many occasions. I’ve left Vince and Lewis out of the side. Their form is now on the decline and so that back pocket position is up for grabs and I’d love to get another defender in the mould of Lewis/Vince, just a younger version. It’s easy to forget how young our core is and is a major reason why we’re still so up and down. The impatience comes from so many past rebuilds like this and I’m guilty of being impatient and wanting results now. But if you look at this group: O-Mac, Lever, Salem, Hunt, Viney, Petracca, Brayshaw, Oliver, Hogan and Weideman. 10 players who are all in a similar age bracket, half haven’t hit 50 games and none have hit 100. Think about that for a minute. That’s genuinely scary. Especially given that there are some keen media people who had us finishinb top four this year. There are bookends in that group and a bunch of midfielders. It’s clear that the clubs blueprint is to keep this group together for as long as possible and build around them. Once they hit 100 games we’ll start to see more consistency in our performances. And from there, anything is possible as long as we’re smart with our trading and drafting. Building a strong club has to start with a young core group that come through together. We’re not as fortunate as other clubs in the leadership department so our leaders will be born from this group. Viney already standing out as the one who is going to drag us along. I can be negative about our club and usually am. But when I think about where we’re ‘actually’ at rather than we’re the media predict or think we ‘should’ be, I get excited. Patience is the last word I want to hear as a suffering MFC supporter. But it’s clearly needed when looking at our list in this light. Happy Friday, go Dees.
  19. You can let yourself know. Cheers.
  20. Can’t wait. Hopefully it’s at the G against Carlton. Will be big.
