  1. I see Phillips is up on the club's website now, with this reference: "The 24-year-old mechanical engineer joined Melbourne University’s VFL women’s side in 2016 and played seven games this season, including the recent VFL Women’s Grand Final." So some Aussie Rules registration is OK for rookie qualification, it seems? The Foxsports article I tagged above (dated "8 months ago") noted "Neither Michelle nor Cat have any kind of football foundation" but also reported that they participated in "first leg of the AFL’s nationwide talent search, blitzing the field to earn two spots in the women’s academy" (which dates-wise aligns with the small/recent number of VFL games). So perhaps the cut-off was the talent search or thereabouts? I think I'll ask the club.
  2. Thanks, Red. If the pay ratio of rookies-to-listeds is the same as in the mens comp they'll be doing it for the love of it, eh? I know a mature-age ex-WNBL woman nominating, and I understand now where she's likely to fit. An avid Dees family, so I've got fingers crossed!
  3. ...and on another rookie(!) - as reported by Hun - Cat Phillips: http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/womens-afl-ultimate-frisbee-sisters-cat-and-michelle-phillips-pursue-dual-sporting-career/news-story/c0eb87cfdbd701d3c7f06f44d11a2e92 Not sure what the transferable skills are, but I'm guessing there's a fair bit of athleticism!
  4. Just to keep the forum ticking... http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2016-10-05/cordner-continues-tradition Has anyone yet come to grips with how the playing list will be put together? How are we getting rookies before there is even a main list? (I'm thinking they're the women being attracted from other sports?)
  5. A teeny tiny vicarious silver lining regarding 'records'?... Adelaide's '98 win from 5th now means nothing, as does their '97 win as the only team to win 4 finals to achieve it, which was MUCH less creditable than the 'dogs, coming in that brief, not-lamented finals system where they got 2 home finals from 4th position.
  6. Is the rookie list continuing next year? I think it's AFLPA that wants it scrapped and playing lists extended (mainly to up the pay of those who would previously have been rookies). Would the change matter anyway, if the club wanted him? I've seen him play quite a few times and add my enthusiasm, for his Robertson-skills and Lovett-hardattheballness. However (and maybe someone out there knows him?) would there be a query on his capacity for the constant training and other rigours at AFL level? He seems to be in the 'country footballer' mould (apologies to country footballers present and past!)
  7. Hibberd and Melksham in and the Bummers as our Round 1 opponent in preliminary AFL thoughts on the fixture, I believe! Well played, Gil!
  8. Thanks DS. Glad I added that last bracket! Reasonable conclusion in your second line. Pity they didn't think the 'less important' 2nds could be 'sacrificed' to the Saturday! Anyway, I now contract my post to the '7-day break' point!
  9. I thought that, too. But the GF is on Sunday, so there will still be a 'regulation' 7-day break for (hopefully!) the Scorps. Presumably the scheduling tries to equalise the coming week's breaks for the 2 teams coming from this weekend's semis (is that how it worked out, not 6 days for one and 8 for the other?)
  10. Damn! Used them, for my first-time-ever use of one of these websites, for my electricity just 3 weeks ago. Missed an even better deal???
  11. Ernest, the women's game has clearly been around a "long" time, as you noted, and with healthy participation numbers (the 'Australian Story' on Moanna Hope and Susan Alberti giving us a good (and moving) insight on these aspects), but what has taken "so" long, I think, from the AFL's point of view, has been the development to a stage that the 'product' could stand alongside the mens' game. That's been achieved now, I reckon, thanks to the Dees and the Dogs (indeed it was there at that first two Dees-Dogs games, which I went to). The risk now - well taken by the AFL, I also reckon - is that the other 150-odd players needed to make up 8 teams will deliver a comparable product. I can't quite agree with you about the marking and ball use tonight, but this might partly be because my expectations have increased following the earlier Dees-Dogs games (and also because I felt there was more riding on tonight for the players vying for spots in the new teams). Anyway, I'm SO looking forward to watching another Dees team, as a foundation member.
  12. A complete comparison with the very wet Round 11 perhaps should compare the conditions. Unfortunately Saturday has little chance of rain, and after a Friday with even less chance. On the other hand, I'm loving us best this year when we're taking the risks and moving it fast. Bring that game to the 'G this week, boys! p.s. Comments on Frawley 'monstering' Weideman: did/does Frawley ever monster anyone?
  13. It doesn't! I thought he was still the precocious 20-year-old, but he's 22 and a half already! 23 goals in his 17 games this year, a good lift on his (short) career average. Too late for him to get a right foot now, though, methinks!
  14. I had to get in before someone else did, effin: I certainly agree...except if the old teams that beat E*******, and the current one that didn't, turned up!
  15. I know this is a thread about Roos's interview, but hope it's OK to talk about some points arising? Training: If it's noted at the time, could/should something have been done at the time?? Hogan's kicking: He's left handed. And I noted, close up, his ball drop for his missed attempt from the Outer flank, Punt Rd end. Looks like a left hander's (emphasis on the left hand, ball 'held' left of centre) Might be contributing?
  16. Tony! Or Lademons? Dwomens? But really - just a thought - Demons works very well for me
  17. I did do it. I'm unexplainably excited by this concept and competition and its future. Anyone else on here joined/joining me? And leucopogon, deanox and engine, I call "Too soon!" on tainting the women with MFCSS, or whatever it was you were doing there...
  18. Two. Indelibly etched, sadly. (...and 16. Let's not be easy on ourselves )
  19. (Sorry M_9; gotta get in first:) ... as opposed to providing the real thing?
  20. A shout out to the grandparents of the world, if I may? I came across two of this breed recently, one who had bought Dees memberships for six grandchildren, then, shortly after, one who had bought TEN! And these were both repeat efforts, year after year. And, while I think of it, what a great 'joke'/pizz-em-off present an armchair or a 3-game is for that hard-to-buy-for family member, social mate or life mate, ESPECIALLY if they follow another team (DOUBLE especially if it's one of the C teams). A thought for 2017 for you all!
  21. Felt Wagner might have been on the sheet to late-replace OMac. But the latter stays in. Fairly remarkable recovery from that nasty hyper(?)extension of the inside of his ankle! Ah, Youth!

  23. A very quick/broad scan of those Wiki-stats: Hibberd of only 'vanilla' stature, Hurley a tall Hibberd a back only, Hurley flexible back and forward with OK goals/game Hibberd tapered/plateaued in 2014 & 2015, Hurley continued on upward trajectory Hibberd a chequered off-field past (though may be seen as 'positive' characteristics for on-field? (not by me though...)) I presume the Goodwin knowledge/view is important against this 'assessment': remind me over what years Goodwin dealt with these guys? What are seen as the attractions of Hibberd - my general impressions from this thread are aggression and kicking (though one-sided?) And is Hurley at all a prospect?
  24. Auto-correct was actually auto-simile-ing in this case bs; my Macquarie has - for the liquid oral output meaning of the words - "to drivel" as the second meaning of "dribble". I think both are well applied to much media reporting of our sport anyway! As to Hibberd (and Hurley) does anyone have some meaningful physical and playing stats for them? (apologies if they're hidden back somewhere in this long thread)
