WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CLAYTON OLIVER
I think this is exactly it. He isn't a front running mid-forward who finds himself on the ends of the handball chain ready to kick the goal. He is a genuine centre midfielder, at the fall of the ball, winning and extracting, dishing off, linking up and running back to cover. If he found himself in the position to kick more goals, we'd probably lose his value in extracting and setting up scoring chains.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CLAYTON OLIVER
He is averaging 8.2 per game this season, so it isn't out of the question. A couple of big weeks brings the average required for the other weeks down. Even if he doesn't get it, amazing to think he is in the frame to be second fastest player to 4000 disposals and 2nd faster to 1000 clearances. That type of inside/outside skill mix is unbelievable. For context Cripps will need about 20 extra games than Clarry to hit 4000 disposals, and Sam Mitchell only has 771 clearances to date.

I agree that the media will claim it is that he doesn't hit the scoreboard, but in reality it's because he isn't doing the finishing, he is doing the extracting and set up, so they don't pay enough attention. There is a reason he won the AFLCA Champion Player Award last year (and will be leading it again once this week's votes come in) yet the media still talks about Pettacca first.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CLAYTON OLIVER
On track for 138 games making him 2nd fastest to 4000 as well. He has played 121 consecutive games too, 2nd longest current streak only behind Jack Crisp on a remarkable 173 (10th all time streak).

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs North Melbourne
It was soft to give away, especially because I think TMac dropped it anyway, but the defender wasn't watching the ball and made front on contact and contact to his arm during the marking contest, so technically there.

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs North Melbourne
Narrm FC has never lost a quarter!

Agree RE the umpiring decisions there and about Rivers. It's been a while since we've had goal kicking defenders and midfielders.

Welcome to Demonland: Jacob Van Rooyen
I swear we had this conversation in 2004 right after we drafted Bate, Dunn and Newton and there was an argument about whether they were the wrong size at 192 and 193 cm.

Chandler Tackle
Concussion is the only bad outcome because it is the only looming court case.

Chandler Tackle
I think it should be pretty clear to all by now though that nothing about this is intended to make any sense except for the purpose of being able to provide a big stack of documented evidence to demonstrate that concussion related injuries aren't the AFLs fault. Every time anyone got concussed it was against the rules and the person was punished. Look at the transcript from our advocates, they say the player should have stepped aside instead of made contact, etc. What more could we have done if players kept breaking the rules?

Chandler Tackle
My take on Chandler: Tackle is at absolute speed. He tackles from behind, tries to turn the player so he doesn't land on his back, but due to the way Foley falls he turns back. I think you can really see the intent to turn Foley there, it just wasn't successful. Chandler let's go of Foley's arms on the way down, not perfectly, but he does. They aren't pinned when he hits the ground. Chandler also doesn't land on Foley's back. To me this is actually a pretty exceptional effort: he manages to get his body across Foley from left to right in the tackle and then lands on knees and his hands to avoid just riding him into the ground. To me this shows care. It was graded as careless. But I think it is more fairly considered an accident that occured when a player was performing a legal action (tackle) while trying to stay within the rules. And I don't think you should be suspended for accidents while trying to stay within the rules. It certainly wasn't intentional. And this is also different than say throwing a random elbow out and "accidentally" getting someone high, in which a player would be careless.

Majak Daw Driving Charges
Faulty, thanks for acknowledging a change in position in light of other info or evidence, it doesn't happen enough! And while the seriousness shouldn't be down played, I do agree with the sentiment that it isn't really back page news too. It can be completely unacceptable, but still "minor" in the scheme of things and therefore barely newsworthy.

Majak Daw Driving Charges
Unlicensed and unregistered means uninsured. The risk that poses to other people in the community when you don't have access to insurance to covers costs associated with potential damage (to either property or people) is just unacceptable. It is completely unfathomable that you could think this isn't a big deal for Majak or anyone.

AFLW List Changes 2022
I hadn't even thought of Harris as being a risk of leaving. I think she left Brisbane to come to Victoria, not chase money. And it's pretty clear she did not gel with Carlton as a club. The money demand was leaked by Carlton but was also a request for a full time job year round at the club as well as the footy. I don't think that is an unreasonable sort of request given the situation those women find themselves in. But ever since she crossed to the Dees she has been absolutely embraced and seems a much loved part of the group. She also seems really down to earth tbh.

Day Grand Final 2022
I'm resigned to the bounce going too @La Dee-vina Comedia. I've always been an avid defender of the bounce in the game but you're right about it holding back the best decision makers. But the bounce has changed. It used to be pretty random, angles, sideways, whatever it was play on if the rucks couldn't both get there. But with the circle, they've made it much harder on the umps, and if it's not pretty much perfect it gets called back. If a perfectly straight bounce and ruck contest is what they want, then go the ball up and get the better umpires. Or find a way to go back to random bounces being a part of the game*, allowing those other ups to break into the AFL. * Allowing random bounces might also have the positive effect of teams to set up a bit wider to try to protect against the opposition fast break from a crazy bounce, but also having the effect of less in close congestion?

Day Grand Final 2022
I think this is a great call here. I also wouldn't be surprised if it happens this year. Gil is going, it will be his personal legacy.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CLAYTON OLIVER
He also needs only 216 disposals to hit 4000. I think the record is Tom Mitchell (137 games), with Greg Williams 2nd fastest at 140 games. Clarry is currently on 132 games so he needs an average of 43.2 to match Tom (unlikely) but is very likely to end up in second. Clarry did notch up 2000 Contested Possessions today is his 132nd though, which very much could be a record.

CHANGES: Rd 09 vs West Coast
He did look a bit sore but still hit contests well and nailed at least one fantastic long kick not long after this, so I get the feeling it wasn't too serious. Slow day but still pinched one, meanwhile we ran rampant at times around him and won pretty comfortably. He is averaging 2 per game vs 2.4 last year and has averaged about 8 disposals (down from >10 last year), so yeah, down on form but he is our leading goal scorer, he has kicked a goal every week, and at least two every round except this week and round 2. I reckon we're getting a bit spoilt if we are even considering dropping our leading goal scorer who averages 2 per game!

CHANGES: Rd 09 vs West Coast
I've always felt like Lever takes a few weeks to find his groove on any return though, whether it is form, pace of the game or "match fitness" I'm not sure. So it might depend on whether the coaches this his current slow going is lack of fitness or just needing time to bed down the "match fitness". That being said, if he has an actual injury I'm not against a week off resting for anyone the next few weeks; I want to be fully fit for Brisbane late June.

Stats Files - 2022
The club would have a whole bunch of other stats, which I'm pretty sure champion data records but doesn't release. I haven't seen the stats but I would expect measures like: Total tackle attempts: self explanatory Ineffective tackles: the tackle sticks but they get an effective disposal Broken tackle: physical contact is made but the attacker breaks free Missed tackle: player tried to tackle but doesn't grasp or gets side stepped or tries with one arm only. They'd also have data on the types of "pressure act" like corralling a player with a ball, instead of just group them all in as "pressure acts".

CASEY: Rd 07 vs Southport
Gee when you look at that league it really doesn't make sense why they aren't playing a reserves comp. 14 of the AFL clubs are effectively fielding a reserves team either directly or by proxy, and they are travelling across three states. Take them out and you still almost have a full VFL grade with 7 standalones. Also, why do 3 clubs have a bye? Surely this comp should be playing as many games as possible to ensure that AFL stand by players are match fit and in form? Anyway, good luck Casey!

Stats Files - 2022
The way the record tackles isn't always consistent with what supporters expect either. The official definition is: Using physical contact to prevent an opponent in possession of the ball from getting an effective disposal. And Effective Disposals are defined as: A handball to a teammate that hits the intended target; or A kick of more than 40 metres to a 50/50 contest or better for the team or a kick of less than 40 metres that results in the intended target retaining possession. So if you grab and take someone to ground or spin then around and around, but they handball off, it isn't recorded as a tackle. This happens a lot in close quarters. If they slap it on the boot as you tackle and it goes 40 m it probably isn't a tackle. If you gang tackle, everyone involved gets a stat. So it is possible we are creating pressure without getting credited with tackles. Corralling players into ineffective disposal perhaps. Or tackling players unsuccessfully (they handball off but still creates pressure) and then the final player fumbles without the tackle being applied. Or perhaps we are starting out of the contest and having one person tackles instead of 2 or 3 person tackles. Unfortunately, it's a case of "they don't give us the real stats".

MFC Rebranding for Indigenous Round
Either way, Demonland and the MFC pales into significance vs the 40,000 years of our first nations people which is why it's great we are renaming ourselves Narrm as a way of showing our respects and helping the continuation of that culture!
