He does so many things that don't reflect on the stats sheet, particularly in the game against the Crows. I have him in my Dreamteam, and from that perpective he is frustrating. So nice to see him getting rewarded for effort on Sunday, and team of the week is deserved recognition. Has all the tools to become a good player.

Good point. I reckon I've seen Hannan smother the ball off the opposition boot at least 5 times in the past 2 weeks. He also corrals the opposition when they have the ball, which forces them to kick to a certain area of the ground. These things don't show up on Champion Data stats. As for Kent, I was a fan, but have come to the realisation that he's a downhill skier. Has currency, so would look to trade.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - STEVEN MAY

And what's your issue with that? That's the only way to get a trade done. We've got too many players with good reputations, that let us down too often. The Jack Watts of this year is like the Jack Watts of old. Does the odd cameo, and that's it. But I doubt the GC would be interested in him. -
Nailed it. We've either had diabolical 1st quarters (Hawks, Roos) or been well on top (Dockers, Tigers). In each case the game has been winnable in the last quarter, but we don't have the mental capacity or belief to finish the job. I'm no psychologist, but it seems that the players get over excited when we score, and get down when we concede goals. Goodwin's got a tough job because Roos left him with a talented list that wasn't used to winning. As a start, I hope he never trots out the line, "We're a young team, blah, blah, blah." Psychologically it could be a crutch for the players to excuse failure.

How about the OP outlines what constitutes a clanger. It's one of those stats that doesn't tell a true reflection on the overall performance of the player. Pretty sure that Dangerfield and Fyfe were "clanger kings" in their Brownlow year. IMO, Tyson has played pretty well in the past 3 weeks.

The OP was about whether we're a better side without Hogan, based on 3 good wins without him. By all means start a thread discussing how we'll cope without him, but that wasn't the intention of the OP.

Out of respect for Jesse, this thread should locked.

After what Jesse has been through with his father, and now this, it puts football into perspective. Whatever Jesse decides to do with his career/life from here on in, I just wish him the best.

You might need to check your facts. The clearing of senior players was more prevalent under the Bailey tenure.
-
Neeld might have been a crap coach or communicator, but he's entitled to implement a new gameplan for a group of players that had been cellar dwellars for 5 years. If Moloney thought that the team was on the right track under Bailey, why did he "dog" the game against Geelong that ultimately led to Bailey's demise. Sounds like the inmates were trying to run the asylum.

Just saw the Guthrie incident. Umpire Schmidt should be fined or suspended for being in the wrong position. If Guthrie didn't push him, Schmidt would have impeded an easy mark. Common sense prevailed, which is a rarity for the MRP. And Vince wasn't pushed into the umpire by Sloane. Vince actually gave Sloane a smack in the chops when the ball was bounced, and lost his way. The fine was appropriate.

He missed training as well, so I assumed it was an ailment.

Mental toughness and effort will always achieve sustained success regardless of gameplan. The Dogs have it. Unless we show that week in week out, we will never achieve sustained success. And if a publicly leaked letter to the coach from a disgruntled supporter impacts the players and FD, it just demonstrates how mentally fragile we are as a club. The same applies to any criticisms from past players.

In 2010, we were a young side choc full of talent, but didn't have the experienced recruits like Vince, Lewis and Hibberd. In 2016 and 2017, we're getting beaten by teams with inferior talent. The excuses are starting to run thin. And you have a short memory. Round 23 2016 v Geelong 111 point thrashing wasn't that long ago.
-
Are you describing the MFC in 2010 or 2017? Here in lies the problem for many. We've been hearing the same excuse for 11 years.
-
Not quite. They've won 5 in total. (1 Under 19, 3 Reserves, 1 Senior).
-
Did that supercede the microwave?
-
Adz, how many flags have you enjoyed?
-
Seriously LH? Ex champions, telling it how it is doesn't damage my morale, and if it damages the club, then the club is more mentally weak than what I imagined. It's the FD and players that damage my morale, not what the media has to say. But then again, I've become indoctrinated to disappointment over the past 10 years.

I was just pointing out that our list management were silly enough to trade in Melksham for a top 25 draft pick and sign him for 4 years, and also re-signed Garland with a 3 year extension. Both were poor decisions, and that's not in hindsight.
-
Agree BB. Based on some people's rationale, the likes of St. Kilda and GC must be worldbeaters, because they pumped Hawthorn without any premiership players. It was a bad loss with no excuses. To say that we would have won the game with Gawn is nonsense, because we lost similar games last year against Essendon and Carlton, when we were raging favourites, and Gawn played.
-
I think he can also play as an outside mid, which is what we're lacking. Even with a full list, he's definitely makes best 22 in our side.
-
Compared to JKH he is, and that's who's taken Kent's place. Last year's return of 25 goals was pretty good for a medium/small forward. Played 2 games this year for 3.4, which makes him an offensive threat to the opposition. The same can't be said of JKH.
-
The facts are that very few Laird/Yeo types come on the trade market, whereas Kelly is. Each year there are very few quality players that move clubs, which adds a premium on those that do. To get Kelly, you initially have to entice him away from GWS, and then outbid all the other Vic clubs. That's what drives his price up. Plus his old man played for North, which could pull at his heartstrings.

Tackling stats aren't the only measurement of applying defensive pressure. At times it's just as important to corral the opposition when they have the ball, to reduce the number of options they have. With JKH, he has the intent to apply pressure, but often the opposition will just run straight past him. Just bring Kent back in FFS, because scoreboard pressure is the best kind of pressue. Some coaches get caught up with their KPI's to the detriment of the team.
