BRFE, your stats tell us nothing because the percentages don't factor in whether the kicks are short or long. Players can chip the ball around which inflate their percentage. And you've obviously never seen Griffen play if you don't believe that he's an elite kick.

I can't believe that it's a lack of general fitness. And don't give me this bullsh#t about having young players, or players coming back from injury. Every team has them. IMO, it's a mindset. The players expend so much energy for so little scoreboard reward, as soon as the opposition get scoreboard supremacy, we drop our bundle. Look at all the beltings we copped last season.

I've been a massive critic of Miller, but I actually thought that he'd found his niche last season when he played closer to goal, and seemed to make the most of limited opportunities. And his kicking was fairly accurate. This season, his kicking seems to have gone back to the bad old days, but I'm still prepared to cut him some slack, because our forward structure and ball movement into the forwardline are diabolical.

I don't know why everyone goes on about needing elite forwards. Any team that moves the ball quickly in a systematic fashion, with equal representation of forwards to the oppositions' defenders, will kick goals. Unfortunately, we don't apply this theory. So who are the elite forwards at the Bulldogs?

As Hannabal mentioned in a post regarding Richmond, their players can hit targets at training, but failed under match-day pressure. I believe that we are in the same boat. We still have a group of players who could hit targets in 2006 and prior, and have since drafted kids who could do the same at junior level. We have players who can win contested ball in McLean, Jones, Moloney and McDonald. but we put ourselves under pressure by handballing to targets who are under just as much pressure. Unless you have players of the ilk of Judd, Ablett, Kerr, Hodge etc., who can extricate themselves from a congested contest, you are rarely going to get midfield clearances under little pressure. And unfortunately, a quick kick into the forward line is not an option for our ball winners because we don't play with a forward structure that allows this. So good luck in drafting elite midfielders capable of making Bailey's gameplan work.

Laidley inherited a diabolical list after a series of abysmal trades. His gameplan in his 1st season was the same high possession/keepings off crap that Bailey's adopted, and North's results were deplorable. Season 2 with the same average list, and Laidley totally changes his gameplan and structure to a more direct style that also involves kicking long to tall targets with crumbers at the feet. It's not hard to comprehend, the less skilled your players are, the less you should overpossess the football.

There are already long term contracts in place between the clubs and the MCC, so the MCC doesn't have to offer the AFL a cent.

Whilst people are getting excited by our membership tally, we actually generated the lowest revenue from memberships of all clubs last season. This would be attributed to the increase number of MCC/MFC members due to the affordability of the package. So the type of membership is more important to the club's coffers than just the numbers. And I don't see why people deride Hawthorn members for signing up their cats and dogs, because in dollar terms, they contribute more to the club than the MCC/MFC members. BTW, I'm not having a dig at the MCC/MFC members, because your contribution is a donation in addition to your MCC subs.

Kicking a winning score is as much about how than who. And that's my concern. Geelong and the Bulldogs don't have star-studded forward lines, yet don't have problems with kicking winning scores. Nothing that's happened in the trial games suggests that we've remedied this problem from last season. Your prediction of 4-7 wins is on the money.

Good points. Stynes has openly endeavoured to make the club more inclusive, which hasn't always appeared to be the case with previous regimes. But whether it was this, or having supporters who understood the dire nature of our situation, the facts are that the current administration got extremely lucky. I don't think that Cameron Schwab should be gloating about doing the right thing, and holding out for what he believed our sponorship was worth. If not for De La Rue and Mamonitis, we would rightfully be questioning the competency of the current administration, as Hazy does.
