  1. As Robert Shaw on SEN noted yesterday, Rodan has plagued his teams with the same problem everywhere he has played; he is too unpredictable and his teammates ahead of him have no idea where he is going to go or what he is going do with the ball.

I'm still a fan of his recruitment, since I think his value lies off-field and he cost peanuts.

On-field he can be counterproductive, but works hard.

    A true stopgap.

  2. I think Franklin would have to sign a contract, then be traded.

From memory, there is a moratorium on trades immediately after a player has signed, i.e. they can't be traded til the next season, unless the player themselves decides to waive that right.

Convoluted and exceptionally unlikely in my eyes.

  3. Pederson?

    Jokes!

I'm not sure Fitzy is an effective backup ruckman either.

    I guess he competes.

I'm just looking at him as largely expendable and he could provide us with an early 20s (2nd round) or late 30s/early 40s (3rd round) pick to get another much-needed mid.

Hopefully an Allen Christensen, who was picked at pick 40ish.

I'd be happy with another Kent or Matt Jones.

  4. That makes no sense.

"I want to go to another club, but I want to weaken that club before I get there by forcing them to relinquish assets for me when they don't need to."

Alternatively, GWS can trade pick 1, but not Boyd, since the draft is AFTER the trade period.

  5. What a club like the Bulldogs would give to have the forward line options we have on our list: Dawes, Clark, Watts, *Hogan, Howe and possibly Fitzpatrick.

We should have seriously good bookends in 2014.

Just need to develop the engine to put into the chassis - there's a big difference between a BMW 320d and an M3.

Two experienced mids and a good pre-season and we're starting to look okay.

I'd try to send Fitzpatrick to the dogs for a 2nd round pick.

I'm not confident of his ability to get a game in coming years, nor his ability to develop into an above average AFL player.

His value would be at an all time high now, especially with the dogs who've seen him up close fluking bananas from the pocket.

They desperately need forwards, and the ones they find in the draft will take time.

  6. It's all relative, isn't it?

Who is better - Luke Ball or Dal Santo?

What if you already have Joel Selwood, Brett Kirk and Ollie Wines in your midfield?

Alternatively, what if you already have Daniel Wells, Stephen Hill and Brett Deledio in your midfield?

    Horses for courses, people.

    Toumpas was the correct choice.

  7. For every Shane Valenti, there is a Michael Barlow. There is Dayne Zorko, there is an Ian Callinan, a Danny Stanley. A lot of blokes who perform at second tier level but don't have the chance until they get a bit older. I've already mentioned Magner earlier in my posts.

Yeah, but Valenti & Magner are from the same mould, while Zorko, Barlow, etc aren't.

Magner has had chances at AFL level and his skills just don't translate.

Any reasonable person should be able to see that.

  8. I even noticed at times, that although the spirit of the U/18 champs dictates that there is no tagging, Kelly received some treatment off the ball.

There was a concerted effort by SA to impede his run at the ball and ability to get to contests at times, especially around stoppages.

Just interesting to note, since I didn't see much of this in the other games for other players.

  9. Why does that matter? You don't think opposition teams would sit another player in front of Boyd? Have you even seen him play?

Yeah, and I think he has it easy because of his size and the lack of decent opposition.

I'm not saying he'll be a bad player, but I think he's overhyped.

    Not top 5 for mine.

Plus we don't need him, with our abundance of talls.

  10. Been some good footy played here today down at Simonds Stadium.

Going on today's performances, I'd take Sheed as number 1 pick.

GWS would probably go for Scharenberg or Acres though, based on needs.

    Underwhelmed by Dunstan so far.

Similar to Martin in that he is a beast, but hasn't found as much of it as you'd like, and I think he'd be a bit of a plodder at AFL level.

Aish and Kelly have shown some good glimpses, but are too slight to make an impact for a while.

Both are more outside than inside.

Clean skills, evasion and reading of the play though.

53 for WA (Cameron?) kicked the winning goal against Vic Country.

Took some great grabs, but kicks like Fitzpatrick.

    Marsh was just another player.

  11. I think the OP shows a critical misunderstanding of what the purpose of Burgan's role is.

It's about generating content for the website, app and social media.

Not providing accurate critical analysis in an effort to win a Pulitzer.

Don't think MFC is alone in this either.

Every AFL club has "digital media generators" that churn out articles in exactly the same manner.

Often they only regurgitate quotes from players they get from radio transcripts and print media articles.

Burgan's work is one of the better examples I have seen.

  12. I never really thought spelling applied to nicknames. Hardly on his birth certificate.

    It doesn't need to be.

He is called "Bomba" after the title character in an old B&W tv show.

Funnily enough, tv shows have a title that is ALWAYS spelled on the screen at the beginning.

It's really all about clarity of the name's origin.

If you don't care, so be it.

  13. bomba thompson started danks???

.... and I thought all along, it was hird that introduced Danks to 'Bomba', when he was at the Cats... hird I thought was getting help with his foot injury, help I thought from Danks??

    wonders never cease...

    Completely wrong.

Hird was associated with Shane Charter.

Dank & Dean "The Weapon" Robinson worked together previously in the NRL.

Robinson is on record when at the cats saying he often sought advice from Dank, although he was not officially an employee.

There were a lot of phone calls between the 2.

  14. wiki contradicts itself

    also from wiki

    Mark Thompson Personal information

    Full name Mark Thompson

    Nickname(s) Bomba <-----------------------------------

Date of birth 19 November 1963 (age 49)

    Place of birth Victoria, Australia

    Original team Airport West (EDFL)

    Height/Weight 177cm / 87 kg

    Actually, I edited the page.

To illustrate how unreliable the source is.

That and the fact I know it is "Bomba" because as mentioned earlier, I've hear Thompson himself confirm it.

  15. Consider the state MFC is in, and how important this new appointment will be for the future of the club.

Do you really think we should be selecting a coach, who:

    A. Doesn't want to do it, and has stated that.

    B. Is currently under the cloud of a serious ASADA investigation at the club where he is a senior assistant and largely culpable.

    C. Has precious few people willing to give a glowing reference from his former club.

    D. Has all sorts of salacious rumours floating around about him, some of which I know to be true.

    E. Has a history of being abrasive and petulant towards some of his players.

    F. His only success has been at a club where it is well known that the recruiter, CEO, Football Manager and President were all regarded as league-best standard.

    G. A first time senior coach was able to step into his shoes and immediately win a flag, such was the state of the rest of the club.

  16. That's called buttering Watts up for a defection to Essendon in the near future.

He'd be a no-brain target - all the tools to succeed, just poorly developed, looking for support and hopefully you can get him on the cheap.

Don't be too excited about Goddard rushing to pat him on the back.
