  1. Fell out of favour with the selectors early in the season and, after dominating in the VFL, came back for a couple of productive games for the Demons at the end in more of a midfield role. At the Scorpions, Bate was runner up in the best and fairest and voted MVP. He also came second in the JJ Liston Trophy behind former Demon Shane Valenti. 6. TIM MOHR WINS 2011 GARDNER CLARK MEDAL by KC from Casey The word on the street is that this year's Gardner Clark Medallist for best and fairest player with the Casey Scorpions, Tim Mohr, is set to become a pioneer with the new Greater Western Sydney Giants franchise which enters the AFL next season. Former Tasmanian Mohr, who played seven VFL games for the now defunct Tassie Devils before joining the Scorpions in 2008, capped off a great season by winning the club's major award on Friday night with 97 votes to hold off Matthew Bate by 16 votes in a close finish with full forward Brendan Fevola coming in third on 61 votes. The 195cm 98kg key position player has shrugged off injuries from previous seasons and finally had a consistent year, playing mainly in defence although he was occasionally called on to pinch hit in the ruck. Mohr combines his size with good strength and speed and is noted for his long kicking. He will attend this week's AFL Draft Combine at Etihad Stadium along with many other draft hopefuls who are aiming for places on AFL club lists in 2012. The Giants' head of recruiting Steve Silvagni was just one of the AFL's scouts present at Casey matches this year and Mohr would most certainly have come under notice. The Giants can draft him under the rule that allows the new club to pre list ten uncontracted players not tied to other AFL clubs. Last year Collingwood secured Andrew Krakouer under the same rule after he was listed by Gold Coast and on traded to the Magpies. The fast finishing Bate can count himself unlucky to miss out. After snatching the lead by a single vote late in the count, he missed two rounds playing for the Demons and this enabled Mohr to hit the front again, a lead which he held to the end which came in the form of the club's crushing semi final exit against Werribee. Fevola also had a strong second half year to finish third. He was the club's top goalkicker for the year with 68 and was a narrow runner up for the Frosty Miller medal for the VFL's top goalkicker. He nudged out last year's third placegetter Matthew Warnock who had another great season at full back. Co-captain and a multiple best and fairest winner James Wall finished fifth ahead of future Demon ruck star Max Gawn. Mohr also picked up the Leader Media Award (as voted by club staff) and the $1,000.00 cheque that goes with it and, along with Rian McGough and Michael Stockdale, was presented with his 50th game awards by former player, current Fremantle defender Alex Silvagni. Another former Scorpion with the Dockers is Peter Faulks who recently made his AFL debut with that club. Wall and courageous co-skipper Kyle Matthews presented the 2011 Captains Award to youngster Luke Tynan who was also won the Reserves Best and Fairest award. Senior coach Brad Gotch was recognised for his achievement on coaching his 250th VFL match this season. By season's end, he was up to 264 games which puts him behind only Bill Faull and Gerard FitzGerald in the number of games coached in VFL/VFA history. Gotch's two-year contract has ended and it is believed the club is weighing up his future. Top vote getters (Gardner-Clark Medal) 1. Tim Mohr 97 2. Matthew Bate 81 3. Brendan Fevola 69 4. Matthew Warnock 63 5. James Wall 55 6. Max Gawn 49 7. Michael Stockdale 43 8. Tom McNamara 38 9. Addam Maric 34 Other seniors awards went to: Seniors Team Acts award - James Wall (who won this award last year). Seniors Players MVP - Matthew Bate. Senior Coaches Award - Matthew Warnock. Seniors Most Improved Award - Will Petropoulos. The Steve Harrison Rising Star Award - Mitch Gent. Trainer Bobbie Lee Blay was best clubperson. Top vote getters (Gardner-Clark Medal) Luke Tynan won the reserves best and fairest, the Snowy Fenton Medal. He polled 58 votes to win from David Bell (50) with Stefan Baumgatner (30) a distant third. Other awards to the Reserves included: Team Acts award Jordon Pollard, Players MVP Stefan Baumgartner, Coaches award Gus Patti, Most Improved Jess Bolton. Aaron Purves was the reserves competition's top goal kicker. In other news, it was reported last week that the club might need to recruit hard to replenish its stocks with, in addition to Mohr's likely drafting, defender Michael Stockdale tipped to go interstate or another VFL club and possible moves by northern suburbs residents James Wall and Rian McGough.
  7. 8. The 2008 # 1 draft pick stepped up again in 2011 as he grew in confidence and strength, securing his first top ten best and fairest finish with the club. In what was still a development year for the youngster, Watts played every game and was tried in various roles around the ground and this should hold him in good stead for the future. With another pre season behind him, he will bulk up further and continue to make rapid progress towards becoming an elite AFL key position player. 9. In the interests of fairness, it should be pointed out that despite what he himself would no doubt admit was nowhere near his best season, Brad Green took more contested marks than any other Demon player this year. He was also our second highest goal scorer with 37, just three behind Liam Jurrah. The above does not address the captaincy issue but are just some simple facts to add to the context of this discussion.
  10. Hard at the ball midfield tagger and defender who had another consistent season. Was again given some big run with roles and took a few scalps in a role that often goes unnoticed. 11. Nuggety on baller whose attack on the football is always relentless continued his consistent form with yet another top five finish in the Keith "Bluey" Truscott club champion standings. The nude nut, tattooed Demon on baller is always willing to put his body on the line and adds a lot of grunt to the team make up. 12. Anthony, Thanks for your well thought out comments re Aaron Davey. His image was removed from the banner for no other reason that we like to update it from time to time with the current in-form players. Like you, we hope that he is spurred on by the disappointments of season 2011 and by the new coaching and fitness people at the club to a return to fitness and his former best form. Cheers, Andy
  13. In his sixth year of senior AFL football, the Demon tall defender found himself well down the pecking order in a defence that contained the likes of Frawley, Garland, Rivers and Joel Macdonald and was shunned by selectors after the team's Round 10 loss to Carlton. Starred at full back in the VFL but it wasn't enough for a recall and he requested a trade at the end of the season. 20. TAC CUP GRAND OLD FINAL by Whispering Jack On the morning of the TAC Cup Grand Final, the Sunday Herald Sun ran an article quoting Barry Prendergast on Oakleigh Charger midfielder Jack Viney, with the Melbourne recruiting chief declaring that he would "not take much notice of the father-son sensation". Easy for him to say because the 178cm 77kg midfielder is already committed to the club, but for Demon fans at the ground it was hard not to notice the 34 possession winning human battering-ram tackle, harass and generally terrorise the Sandringham Dragons on his way to being judged officially as best on ground. A fair effort for a bottom aged player who isn't eligible to be drafted until November next year, but enough of that. This was a grand final and it was won by the Dragons who started and finished the stronger and it was their big men who won the day in a high standard exciting game of football that had everything. The game was one of momentum shifts that also highlighted the talents of some skilful youngsters who will soon be attracting more attention from the football world as the national draft draws closer. The players who attracted my attention were:- • Sandringham Dragons Ben Darrou 25/11/93 190cm 91kg - a strong, athletic defender who looks to have all the attributes necessary to make it at AFL level. He held up well even in the middle stages when the Dragon defence was most under pressure. Does a lot of the one per centers that often don't get noticed. Jackson Paine 21/06/93 193cm 87kg - was impressive when I saw him playing for Vic Metro in the televised national championships game. On Sunday, he kicked a couple of goals and always looked dangerous with his good positioning and strong marking. Xavier Richards 25/04/93 194cm 81kg - brother of Sydney Swan Ted Richards. He played forward and back, kicked a couple of goals and was one of a number of talls who overwhelmed the Chargers in the end. Fletcher Roberts 03/06/93 197cm 80kg - it seems that every TAC Cup grand final produces a player whose performance is elevated in draft standings and the 197cm Roberts with five goals (three in the final quarter) was the match winner who stood out with his leading and strong contested marking. He missed a couple in the third term but generally, his disposal was good. He also showed good agility and was reasonable at ground level. Liam Sumner 16/08/93 182cm 70kg - a well balanced pacy outside midfielder with poise who kept going all day. Showed that he can win the ball at the stoppages and also pushed forward to kick a goal. A potential first round selection. Alex Woodwood 11/06/93 179cm 79kg - worked really hard for the Dragons and finished with 20 touches in a performance that showed he has the capability of making it as a small midfielder who can win the hard ball. • Oakleigh Chargers Seb Gotch 12/07/93 172cm 71kg - son of the Scorpions' coach. I liked the way this Gotch played and in this day and age when the small forward is making a comeback, it would not surprise if he was drafted (albeit probably late because of his size). He took a couple of speccies in the second quarter for his two goals and showed great discipline on a couple of occasions when he gave the ball off to a teammate in a better position. Is a quick thinker and a moves well and apparently if he doesn't make it as a footballer, he could make it at a high level at cricket. Toby Greene 15/09/93 180cm 78kg - was super-impressive at the national championships and was close to best on ground in the final game at Etihad Stadium on his way to All Australian honours. He must like this ground because he was close to best again with 34 possessions in a losing team. A real ball magnet who links well and has good skills. Nick Murphy 22/03/93 194cm 86kg - got the Chargers going with his strong hands, good leading and accuracy in front of goals. Kicked five but in the end was overshadowed by his opposite number for the Dragons. Adam Tomlinson 10/08/93 192cm 86kg - his run out of defence was exceptional and he saved his team on a number of occasions. Has good mobility and, despite a rare error late in the game, he was one of his team's best. Should get drafted early. Dom Tyson 08/06/93 186cm 82kg - touted as one of the leading midfielders and a possible top five draft choice after winning All Australian selection at the national championships. Tyson did not stand out in the grand final but he did show signs of his ball winning ability and the creativity that led to the big wraps on him this year. There were others who went in and out of the game which I rate as one of the best I've seen in the two decades of TAC Cup competition but I have to come back to Viney who fully deserved the accolades he received for his game. His attack on the ball was the strongest I've seen from a kid of his age and his performance ranks favourably with that of another under age midfield type from the Dandenong Stingrays who I watched in the 2008 final series. Tom Scully was seriously good in those games and stamped himself as a potential # 1 pick for the draft that was then more than twelve months away. Viney is in the same category but his pathway is likely to be different in that he will probably share his time between the Casey Scorpions and the Carey Grammar school team. I do sense that Viney will be somewhat more committed to the cause of the AFL team for which he is destined to play. 22. I was going to correct the spelling of the thread title but that would just legitimise the content.
  23. The main thing about Beamers speech (and I regret not filming it) was that he is gutted not to be playing finals and that it kills him to watch the finals each year and not be apart of it. He said he can't understand why Joel Selwood gets to play finals and not him. the way he said it was full of emotion. My other favourite Beamer quote for the night involved Ron Barrassi in the men's room. Get your filthy minds out of the gutter it's not that kind of story. Barrass was walking into the men's just ahead if me. He bumped into Beamer who was coming out and Barrass relayed to him that Collingwood had just won the game. All Beamer said was "yeah, by 3 points the bastards." I love that he despises them. Classic! Make him captain!
