2018 Player Reviews: # 18 Jake Melksham
MILKSHAKE The medium forward booted 32 goals in a year that saw him complete a top ten finish in the club best and fairest. His was at his best with game-swinging goals against West Coast in Round 22 and Hawthorn in the Semi Final while he was sublime against Carlton in mid season with a massive five goals, 21 disposals and 15 score involvements rated the fifth best of the decade. Melksham was ranked first in the competition for goal assists, with 33 overall. 2018 Player Reviews: # 19 Mitch Hannan
THE GOAL MAN The highlight of Hannan’s year was his goal on the run that heralded the win over Geelong in the Elimination Final. It was one of 22 for the season (the same number he kicked last year on debut) that included an important three goal haul against the Eagles. Was hampered by some knee issues and an early bout of indifferent form which saw him at Casey in a few occasions during the year. PEDO’S FAREWELL The AFL career of this tough workhorse who was tireless in the ruck in the absence of Max Gawn and Jake Spencer last year is over. He spent most of this year as a spare parts man at Casey and, as always, stood up when it counted. Was the team’s top goal kicker in 2018. The first piece of the puzzle has been laid down.- 2018 Player Reviews: # 22 Aaron vandenBerg
COMEBACK Aaron vandenBerg came out of the wilderness late in the season to play in the finals after being forced out of the game for 18 months when stress fracture in his heel developed into Haglund's disease. The strong and aggressive midfielder displayed outstanding form on his comeback but may be forced to step away from the club due to family commitments in NSW. THE BERN Bernie Vince, who announced his retirement effective at the end of season, has had a celebrated career at the club. He arrived from Adelaide when the team was almost down and out, raised the banner early when he took on and beat former teammate Patrick Dangerfield in Adelaide and continued to lift the club on its upward journey under Paul Roos and then Simon Goodwin. Played more than 100 games with both Adelaide and Melbourne and also won best and fairest awards at both clubs. A wonderful achievement! NO HYPHEN? JKH mysteriously lost his hyphen or perhaps it was never there? Whatever the case, he did manage to get in a handful of games at AFL level and his contract was extended by another 12 months. Had his moments but not enough for best 22. Didn't we lose our fitness guru Rob Jackson earlier in the year when he left us for a job with the umpires?- 2018 Player Reviews: # 25 Tom McDonald
FORWARD CLASS Tom McDonald led the competition’s most prolific attack with 53 goals after missing the opening five games with a foot problem. Always a difficult match up for defenders with his strong marking and the huge tank that gets him around the ground where he can also be damaging. THE WEID Finally moved away from his earlier injury issues and inconsistent form to establish his place in Jesse Hogan’s absence late in the season. Weideman’s breakout game was a timely best-on-the-ground display against Geelong in the Elimination Final. Will be interesting to see how the back 6 evolves with the addition of May (if it happens) and Lever returning. I think this can only help OMac develop more.- 2018 Player Reviews: # 27 Harley Balic
HOMESICKNESS TURNS FROM PURPLE TO BLUE The former Docker who returned here after injuries and homesickness restricted his stint in the West. Balic made a stellar return to his home state with six goals in Round 1 for Casey and showed promise for the future but he found that he had lost the passion and retired before the end of the season. It was a sad end to a career that promised so much before he was injured late in the TAC Cup season before he was drafted. NO LONGER JUST THE KID BROTHER McDonald was one of the big improvers in defence and held some of the competition’s best key forwards down to miserly levels. Will only get better with more experience. SPEED HUMP The pacy Demon’s career hit a speed hump this year as injuries and a loss of form dogged him throughout the season and kept him down to an inauspicious six games.
