Guerra sheds light on this, and other “game day activations”, here:

  1. Moving to the other, bigger, race to make use of more/bigger screens

  2. More use of LED signage

  3. Songs after goals (Let Me Entertain you after the first goal of the match, then players’ choices)

  4. More in-game information from announcers (eg as to injuries)

the two highlighted parts in particular sound ghastly to me, as does this part:

"Melbourne will trial a new style of match-day entertainment at the MCG designed to keep fans engaged from first bounce to final siren."

isn't that called 'the football'?

Is there any evidence this nonsense attracts and retains fans? Otherwise we're just doing it on the vibe that kids want to hear 30 year old Robbie Williams songs.

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen it.

I suspect attendances are up for other clubs/sports where they do this. But I also suspect those other clubs are playing attractive football/sport and winning.

IMO, if we played 2025 football this year, no amount of “activations” would bring people to the ground. If we play exciting, top 4 level football, I suspect people would come watch even if we had borderline silence on match days outside of the actual game.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
