PRESEASON AFLW TRAINING: Wednesday 2nd July 2024

Featured Replies

The weather was hard the women were harder.

22 in full training.

O'hehir in a moon boot doing handballs with D.Taylor, both in rehab. Colvin doing her individualised program, (joined the main group for some running, though didn't last long) as was Wotherspoon (plenty of running, looking fit and light). Mahony there, but not training.

Heath had a training test, she must have passed as she joined the main group.

I didn't notice Pearce, Goldrick, or both Mackin's.

The trainers worked them extensively. Plenty of run throughs, most of them were on their haunches at the end.

Drills consisted of two stations, one with numerous ground ball gets and handballs, the second had them moving the ball by foot after a one two handball. Given the wet conditions, they did really well, the biggest problem was kicking the ball and hitting the chest, handling the ball was performed with the needed care and generally they were clean.

They went into a competitive handballing game. Splitting into three teams, rotated so each played the other once. At the split they practiced giving the bird to the opposition. Good synchronisation and following the flavour of the month. They had the intensity up, and were eager to tackle, those with poise excelled (Hore, Purcell, Pisano, Hanks, Harris, Chaplin, Heath, Gillard, Fitzsimon, Zanker, McNamara).

They then had sims. Cambell did well, as did S. Taylor (enthusiastic, sets up well behind the ball). We have some smart players, Harris, Hore, Hanks, and Gillard who set the plays up.

Dethridge looks ok, strong, though has some Achilles awareness which seemed to slow her down.

McNamara looking strong, with smart plays, she has bulked up through her hips. Rigoni looks ready to go, fast, big and eager.

Johnson reminds me of a young McNamara.

Pisano is looking strong, fit and training well.

Zanker was heavily involved in the play, running freely and also looking good.

Heath, Bannan and Lampard not far behind the standouts.

Gathered for mumerous chats, Harris had a long talk on one occasion, later other leaders. They look very connected, with a genuine love for each other. Displaying plenty of support, encouragement, and inclusion with and to each other.

That's good news re Heath, but bad news re O'Hehir. Hope it's nothing serious, she looked the good in the VFLW game she played. Very poised and seemingly had lots of time - usually the mark of a class player.

My understanding is that Aimee is still on the inactive list, and I was assuming she would be remaining in Ireland.

There's one or two relegation games left in the LGFA for Blaithin and Aimee (who has just returned to play). So Blaithin will presumably be back in a month or so. Not sure what happens after the All-Ireland season for Aimee but hopefully her recovery continues well.

She trained with the main group today and looked fine 👍🏽

That's good news (precautionary moon boot). My thoughts at the time were, "if serious she wouldn't be ball handling". Molly O'Hehir's hands were fast and clean (wet day as well), hoping she brings great skills to the club.

No soccer balls?

Blaithin is recovering from a hamstring injury, she's returning to Melbourne this week. She may miss the first couple of rounds of the season.

Sinead will be a little later to Melbourne. Dublin has made the championship match and of course we all wish her and the Dubs the very best of Irish luck.

Great news!

Just looked it up, the championship match is the 4th of August, 1.15am our time. We'll dream of victory for Sinead. Up the Dubs!

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
