Australia has sent a strong athletics team to Paris with our athletes in great form across track and field.

There are a host of genuine medal contenders including in women’s high jump, with Tokyo medallist Nicola Olyslagers and 2022 world champion Eleanor Patterson in action.

Matthew Denny, competing in his third Olympics, is a chance in the men’s discus throw after becoming the Diamond League champion last year, while pole vaulter Nina Kennedy has been in blistering form this year.

Mackenzie Little will be in contention for a women’s javelin medal — she recorded a personal best at the London Diamond League meet last week, sending her javelin 66.27m to secure gold.

Also, Jemima Montag is a contender for a podium finish in the women’s 20km walk, while keep an eye on Peter Bol and Jessica Hull in the men’s 800m and women’s 1500m respectively.

Great work above Macca.

Haven't been online much this year, so apologies for my late arrival.

I can advise as an early warm up for the games, the Football and Mens Rugby 7's kicks off tonight! Olyroos aren't there, but our mens Rugby 7's are in action at 11:30pm and 3:00am against Samoa and Kenya. Then I think our Matildas will take the field tomorrow night.

And in other great news, Roy & HG are back for their daily Olympic Coverage!

Welcome back TD

Can we match or surpass Tokyo when we won 17 Gold medals?

Can we beat the Brits?  The Olympic 'Ashes' haha

Ch9 look to be covering every single sport with the 9Now app so the coverage looks to be very good

So it's 24/7 Olympics for me (in-between shortened days at work) apart from the 3 Demon games played on 2 of the Saturday nights (Giants & Port) & the Friday night (Doggies)

I can see us doing well in the pool again although expectations are high.  And as always, we're sure to be very competitive in the Rowing, Cycling, Sailing and in some of the Track & Field

But I love the team events which fall into the same sort of category as the Cricket Test team and of course, the MFC

If we could snag 2 or 3 gold in the team events (we're entered in 14 or 15 sports I believe, we'll be doing well

But they are hard to win

And it's great that Roy & HG are back (thanks for the link) ... during the day I may well tune into TalkSport radio as that UK station will be providing an overview of each day at the Olympics

Also, Ch9 will be doing a Paris 'Encore' highlights package at 12noon every day until 3pm.  Might be Todd Woodbridge hosting

The Opening ceremony could be spectacular too as it's being held on the River Siene!

Anyway, let's see if the Mens Rugby 7's can kick things off well.  As you know, in that version of Rugby, any team can beat any team on any given day (so we're a chance)

And the Matilda's too of course.  An opening win helps their chances enormously

Beating the efforts of 2020/21 will be tough. I think their goal should maybe be around how we went in 2008 - 14 G, 15 S, 17 B should be a good ball Park for them to aim for. Main thing is to avoid the disappointment of 2012 & 2016.

If there's one event for me to put my house on for a gold medal for the Aussies this Olympics, it's the women's 4x200m Freestyle relay. While it could be tough work for us in the team events this Olympics. Matildas and our Hockey teams are probably as good a chance as anyone.

Good tough fought opening win for our Mens Rugby 7's team over Samoa to kick off the games 21-14. The Pacific Island nations are always difficult in the 7's.

Here's hoping the win at the start of the games is a good omen for things to come!

Was a good match too, fast & furious!

Next up is Kenya at 3.00am and our final group match is at 10.30pm tonight against Argentina

Points differential can matter if we're to advance (the top 2 teams from each of the 4 groups advance to the Q/F's)

Got the chocolates 21-7 against Kenya in the middle of the night. So a guarantee spot in the Quarter Finals. A win over Argentina would obviously help with a better draw, so touch wood they can keep the form rolling this evening.

Thanks for the breakdown Macca.

And great to see the Mens 7's get a 22-14 over Argentina and top their group. Hopefully a kind draw for the Quarter Finals later tonight will now await. Very happy for the men, as their previous Olympic campaigns have been left wanting and the Women have been our only real serious chance.

Great win to the Aussies against a highly rated opponent (Puma's) Very impressive!

There's only 3 groups so we now play the 7th* ranked team (overall) in the Q/F's ... if we had have lost against Argentina we may have been up against Fiji or France in the Q/F's

So we've given ourselves a good chance to advance to S/F's

But as we've seen, a number of the teams are very good so we'll need a bit of luck

*That team might be the USA

Mens Surfing

July 28, Sunday Men’s round 1 3:00 AM Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Wallabies do it again, this time with a 18-0 win over USA. That means it's now a Semi Final against the Flying Fijians on Saturday evening our time. A win will ensure our first (or one of our first) medals for the games in the early hours of Sunday morning. A loss will put us in a bronze play off match against one of France or South Africa.

Meanwhile we won't talk about the Matildas 0-3 thump to reality...

I was surprised and dismayed at the Aussie swimmers taunting the US team. I thought it was uncalled for. Yanks are often weird but unerringly polite. It was talking the talk.

Yes, Matilda's outclassed by a much superior team, but they are not out of it.  8 of the 12 teams advance to the Q/F's, so a win and a draw in the remaining 2 group matches would probably see the Matilda's advance

Women's football in Australia is on the up and the sky is the limit, but there's still a fair way to go to catch up the European teams

As for the Men's Rugby 7's, a terrific achievement to reach the S/F's.  Fiji will be very tough but we're playing well. At least 1 win from the remaining 2 games secures a medal so there's a lot to play for

Looking forward to the opening ceremony!

Don't poke the bear. Has always been a motto I think we should use when it comes to the American Swim team.

So a bit of a mixed bag with the opening ceremony. For the most part I thought it was good.

Having it on the river front by boat etc and some of their set pieces were quite impressive. Gives Brisbane some options for 2032 so they don't have to go with the small rectangular stadium option.

While on the negatives, some of the set pieces were just plain weird (probably very Europe)! Also I didn't get the mass other nation and in particular American influence in the names for the opening ceremony. Lady Gaga, Michael Phelps, Carl Lewis, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams. None of them French. I always thought the point of the opening ceremony was to showcase your nation and your people and their accomplishments. But maybe that's just me??

Edit: I'm also not sure how I feel about the Olympic Flame/Cauldron. I mean what they've done is impressive. However, it feels a little odd with it not being at the Athletics stadium...

Well I thought the opening ceremony was fantastic.  What they achieved couldn't have been done in the confines of a stadium

And considering it was never going to be held at the main stadium, it was exceptionally well done and has maybe set the standard for future opening ceremonies

Colourful and very different (and typically French), I loved it!

I think you'll find that it was a couple of our athletes responding to the USA's swimming coach not being gracious in defeat, and then outrageously claiming that they'd won the swimming meet when they had clearly been well beaten by the Aussies

Team victory is traditionally measured in Gold medals (first) and the scoreline from that swimming meet was the Aussies (10 Gold) and the USA (3 Gold) The Americans won the most overall medals but they can't have it both ways

And if another reference was the 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay strumming their air guitars back at the Sydney Olympics, that was in response to Gary Hall Jr stating that the USA would smash the Aussies like guitars

It seems to me that the brash & boastful yanks are starting the fires.  But that's ok, it takes all types

Didn't mind the opening ceremony, it was different which is not surprising with the French.

As for sports I'm looking to watching the Boomers, Volleyball, Cycling and binging on Athletics.

Yes, in-stadium opening ceremonies often showcase a nation's achievements and classic features

So the French decided to take us to those areas instead.  I'm surprised it hasn't happened before and I'm betting it will certainly happen again

As for the sports, I can honestly say I can embrace any sport (rock climbing, skateboarding included) but the swimming, Track & field, Rowing & Cycling along with any of the team sports win out.  Sailing I like too but towards the pointy end mainly

Great win first up for Boomers 92-80 against their nemesis Spain! They have the group of death, so I thought they were every chance to go winless this campaign, even if they didn't even play badly.

Good to see some strong swimming heat performances as well. Think we're a good chance to get Gold in two events early this morning and outside shots in the other two.

Kookaburras get the chocolates 1-0 against Argentina in their opening match. A good win against one of the tougher opponents in their group. Sets them up for a good campaign.

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
