Of course a defender is accountable for an opponent.......

But there is a hell of a lot of value, especially in the way the game is played today in a half back flanker or any defender these days who can create drive and run from the back line, and to do this they therefore have to be able to leave their opponent. This of course is in general and is not particularly specific.

But that doesn't make them automatically unaccountable, because they have to always watch their man.

QC, I have no doubt. There is the need for the judgement to act in particular circumstances and I dont think Bizzell has it and is exposed by good sides who exploit that and other shortcomings in his game.

I understand that you don't rate Bizzell.

But who would you prefer to see in the team instead of him?

I am not bothered either way at the moment as none of Bizzell, Ward, Brown excite me and its a good chance they will all be gone at year end. They have all come up short to often and I know we wont go forward with any of them.

There is a lack of class there ATM and I can see an opportunity to rectify

Barring injury for 2007, I would like to see it as follows:

My preferred backline:

B: Whelan, Carroll, Frawley

HB: Bell, Rivers, Sylvia

I'd like Sylvia to be able to launch attacks forward for us

I agree with this statement completely.

By the same token by I reckon ND is blowing our hopes of a win by selecting players like Ward and Brown because they are the ones who stream upfield and then cough it up only to have the ball sail back over their heads to their free men. If we're going to play that kind of football the cattle need to be able to hit targets, i'm sure that's why Yze and to some extent Davey are used down back on occasion. We really lack the overall footskills necessary to be a competitive team these days. What's the answer? I know that ND and the football dept don't have it.

Who would you pick and play instead of them given the availability of players over the past few weeks?

Just out of interest, is Frawley in there because you think he is the best option for the rest of this year, or more for giving him experience?

Like Bizzell does?

At this point of the year, I think Frawley is with the odd game for the gorilla player requiring Holland.

Like Bizzell does?

No better.

Better footskills, better overhead skills, better accountability and quicker....for starters.

.... poorer judgement and awareness, has played little football in defense.

Sounds like Bizzell.

He may be shorter but he is stronger overhead and in a contested situation than Bizzell.

Given the way HBs play these days, it would be a good move for Sylvia in 18 months to ultimately build fitness and nous to play the midfield.

And he is more accountable too.

Bizzell is strong overhead, and is a very good kick... short or long. Injuries have ruined his past few years, but I remember many games, including finals where he continually repelled the opposition. I also have vivid memories of miraculous saves, unbelievable spoils and selfless acts. To keep referring to him as unskilled and unaccountable indicates a lack of understanding and insight.

I recall his great acts way way back in 2002.

Much has changed since then.

Opposition coaches have worked him out and exploited his lack of pace and his poor accountability.

For much of 2004/2005 he was a Houdini in the backline and disappeared all too often under pressure. Even more reprehensible for a member of the apparent leadership group.

I have never called him unskilled.

As far as understanding and insight goes.....saying that "unaccountable in this context is the language of yesteryear's 1 on 1 philosophy. The game has moved on. " really is at the low end of the knowledge meter

I do agree with you here wayne and I have a genuine soft spot for Bizz.....

But the reality is that he is probably past his best and may not be around after his contract expires at the end of this season.

But he was very good yesterday and it was great to see, and if he maintains that form then he will play, but he is not the future.

However if Ward can hold down a spot in the back line, I would think that on yesterdays form Bizz should be able to ;) !!!

2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. He showed great resilience in coming back from a nasty rib injury and is expected to continue in that role for another couple of seasons. 2024 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield. There could be more of that in 2025. The luckless Salem suffered a hamstring injury against the Lions early in the season and, after missing a number of games, he was never at his best. He was also inconvenienced by minor niggles later in the season. This was a blow for the club that sorely needed him to fill gaps in the midfield at times as well as to do his best work in defence.
