Ian Dury had reasons to be cheerful.  So do we!

1.  Melbourne can't lose this weekend

2.  Casey can't lose this weekend

3.  There's another brainteaser*

*  may not necessarily cause cheerfulness

As always, below is a mock team that today consists entirely of past and present Demons players.

What do they have in common?

I don't rate this one as particularly difficult.  YMMV.

Answers in a PM only if you would be so considerate.

When all our world seems preoccupied otherwise, @Demonstone, a brave venture into Not Taking Things Too Seriously!

Power to your arm, Good Sir.

written abbreviation for your mileage may vary: used, for example on social media and in text messages and emails, to mean that you understand people may have a different opinion or experience to yours: Their first album is better, but of course YMMV.

We've cracked the ton!  One hundred views, but only one (incorrect) suggestion to date.

My nephew Matthew's footy team also cracked the ton today, kicking an impressive 20.16.136.

@Demonstone, may I request for this, and for any other future mockeries, by you, me or any other bravehearts, that the commonality be nominated at the outset, in one of the three following categories:

1. Football related and related to the selected players

2. Football related but not related to the selected players

3. Not football related.

Ready, set, go...

Looks like that first clue was far too obscure.  (Demonland:  What freakin' clue?)

Here's another.

The coach of this team is Dean Bailey.  None of Goodwin, Roos, Neeld, Daniher, Balme or Northey qualify.

I'll fish a bit further, @Demonstone; I realise there should have been four categories (with examples now):

1. Football related and related to the selected players e.g. 'Scored goal with first kick'

2. Football related but not related to the selected players e.g. 'Share name with Brownlow medallist'

3. Not football related but related to the selected players e.g. 'Born in same month'

4. Not football related or related to the selected players e.g. 'Share name with famous guitarist'

Ready, set, go again...

There but for the grace of cod and so on?

This particular teaser falls into category 3.

I'll be back in the morning with a further clue if required (which I suspect may be the case).

Thanks.

And that's OK; I know my plaice.

Hmmm, still no more takers.

To help find the answer, focus less on Fogarty (the Crow) and more on Friggidy Tha Saint.

@Timothy Reddan-A'Blew is correct on two fronts.  Double bravo!

Not only has he identified the correct answer but has also provided another clue.

I thought the same!!!

More than the obscure that @Demonstone later claimed ... 'red herring' more like it 🙃

Mr d, clues are supposed to help find the answers not run people around in circles ...

An oblique reference to Matthew 20.16 - "So the last will be first".

This is the first and almost definitely the last time I'll be referencing the scriptures!

Friggidy is a rapper who has a "song" called "And The Last Shall Be First"

Bailey is also a first name.  None of the others meet this criterion.

Reference to Godwin Grech of 2009's "Utegate" scandal.  Godwin/Goodwin.  Thanks @Timothy Reddan-A'Blew!

The answer of course is that all the players in my team have surnames that can also be first names.

I can understand your frustration and anger.  You probably want to hit me.  Hit me.  Hit me.

We started with Ian Dury. It would seem appropriate to let the last be the first.

So no-one came third ...

I do agree with you initial comment - it was relatively easy; 'clues' not withstanding 🙃

Mr d, thanks for all your work to entertain and challenge us.

I thought it might make a change from the mass anger, bitterness and vitriolic wrist-slashing of late.

Be warned that I have three (3!!) more teasers up my sleeve, but will not post any for a while.

You don't scare me !!! 😁

I thought of the possibility of Surnames that are also first names, but discounted it since I've never heard of anyone with the first name "McLean". (and I actually met Lord MacLean at Duart castle on the Isle of Mull in 1977)

I guess there's some Rap singer or drummer called MacLean Smith or something!

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.

The Dees are back at the MCG on Thursday for the annual blockbuster ANZAC Eve game against the Tigers. Can the Demons win back to back games for the first time since Rounds 17 & 18 last season? Who comes in and who goes out?
