In summary:

- The AFLW season will increase to 12 games in 2025, with the potential to increase to 14 matches by 2027 (dependent on crowd and TV metrics)

- The average AFLW player pay rise to $60,000 for the 2023 season, up from $46,000. It will rise to $82,000 by 2027. (The average AFL player salary will be about $519,000 by 2027)

- AFLW players will also now be able to sign multi-year contracts

- AFLW players who move states to join a different team will now receive relocation and travel benefits equitable with the AFL competition

- A world leading 12-month pregnancy policy will be introduced

- The AFL and AFLPA will work together on executing an accelerated marketing plan designed to build greater support for the AFLW competition

Can't see this one being too popular - the standard 9-month pregnancy is already pretty taxing on women.

Haha, what an outrage! Extra incubation time for future parent-child selections?

This is the poisoned chalice handed out by the AFL.  Need to get 6K to a game or we don't expand the season.

Not much chance of that when teams are sent to Frankston at 5.00 on a Friday night, or Mordor on  a Thursday, or Wigan oval in the Adelaide suburbs, or Warnambool.......

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?

It was only a preseason match but the new look Demons spearheaded by new coach Steven King looked impressive as they put on a clinic against perennial cellar-dwellers North Melbourne as they cruised to an 80 point victory at Casey Fields.
