The game was well umpired last night (all things considered)

Remembering that the sport itself is impossible to umpire correctly anyway so an error rate has to be factored in

A Demon mate of mine was with a group of Pie supporters (watching in a pub) and he was saying that the Pie fans were screaming that they were being crucified by the umpires.  All game

Yet many here and elsewhere tthought that the Swans were crucified by the umpires

So which opinion is right?  In my view, neither

The answer is somewhere in the middle so we could come to the conclusion that neither team was hard done by

Thought the umpiring was excellent last night. 1 or two decisions doesn't make a game, no matter how much people want it to.

Gee we must’ve been banged up or unfit ,mentally weak ,or something amiss to lose to that bog ordinary side in Brisbane

I hope we get that mongrel back for 4 quarters next year.

Lucky we did because no one will remember how much  better than the Dees other 3 were.

So why is the best" repeat effort " on here so called fans saying the Dee's lose because of umpiring favouritism.

Ps It clearly was "IN THE BACK "  (can't overlook a nudge then leaning across space to push) but you might argue the mark could have been paid

It was definitely contentious, as was the Ginnivan 50 that I haven't seen paid once this year. Not great and you'd expect them to look at this but overall thought it was pretty good.

The filth supporters are diabolical. They boo and call "ball" from the opening bounce and never let up. Thankfully they seem to have stopped doing the ridiculous "USA/USA" chant.

So glad they didn't make the GF.

So annoying that they lucked in with 2 excellent father/son picks.

I listened to razor ray this morning and his discussion with Whately on all the contentious decisions. I have to admit I wasn't aware of some rule changes and clearly neither are the players.

The Ginnivan 50 metre is relevant because cast your mind back to the previous week when Kossie gave away a 50-metre penalty close to the goal. The rule was changed and if you aren't in the marking contest you must stand 9 metres away from where the mark was taken. You don't stand the mark and get called back anymore if the contest is less than 9 metres out from the goals. Leon Cameron commenting on the radio knew the rule and when it was paid against Ginnivan he immediately stated that the player clearly didn't know the rule. I suspect the same holds for Kossie. For those critical of Kossie, we owe him an apology and the interpretation was correct.

The next question was about a free to Stengel against Starsevitch, which seemed unreasonable as he had no time to dispose of the ball, had his arm pinged and went to the ground. Unfortunately with his free arm, he had the ball and once the ball hit the ground the new rule states he must dispose of it. God knows who thought that rule up or how one is supposed to dispose of it while pinned to the ground. The relevance relates to lever the week before where the late free was awarded because when McStay tackled him, Lever put the ball to the ground and was trying to paddle it to safety. We all thought it was paid for deliberate out-of-bounds which of course it wasn't. Like Lever, I was unaware of this ruling and the interpretation was sadly correct.

Who would be an umpire? The rules aren't simple and so many nuances and clearly, the players as well as the public have no idea of some recent rule changes.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
