CASEY: Rd 17 vs Northern Bullants

Featured Replies

The VFL fixture has drawn the Casey Demons against the Northern Bullants on Sunday at Casey Fields at 12.05pm.

There is no other VFL game on Sunday so it might get some exposure but, with a depleted side due the extended group of players that Melbourne took to WA, coach Mark Corrigan will probably be happy to get the four points after last week’s debacle.

If he’s back from that heel injury this week, Mitch Brown’s return will be most welcome. Deakyn Smith will be out with concussion. The Demons were destroyed by the Bulldogs in the ruck last week and, in the absence of Majak Daw who was on the plane to Perth, are desperate for reinforcements in this part of the ground.

We need to see a response from Casey this week. Covid is really messing with the season and it means every game is critical

All VFL games cancelled this weekend.

With double digit new cases today (none in quarantine throughout their infectious period) and the newspapers leaking the news that our so-called 7 day lockdown is likely to be extended (and virtually every leak during this epidemic has come to fruition), I think there’s every chance that the season will be cancelled. Even if the lockdown ends soon enough to fit in games, Andrews has made it clear that we can expect more lockdowns before we achieve 80% vaccinations. You can already forget NSW opening any time soon and with Queensland likely to do anything at the first sign of a cough or sneeze, I wouldn’t rely on them. You can’t trust WA.

As it is, the competition becomes farcical when some clubs AFL counterparts have to take half a dozen with them interstate as Melbourne has done this weekend while other clubs are not disadvantaged at all.

Might as well shut up shop or work out a top 8 on match ratio, plan for a finals series in September and hope they can play one.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
