Role player / Selfless buy in

Featured Replies

Loving the work Gus is doing on the opposite wing to Langdon. All the little things, positioning, winning/halving both ground and marking contests, he tackles with intent every time. On Friday it was the most obvious display but he's been consistently playing this role all year.

As stated by Daisy he rarely loses a contest. The ball use at times has been the only knock but I think that comes out of being encouraged to be creative with ball in hand with his spatial awareness and vision. This is a player we thought might only succeed as an inside mid. Like Tmac, proving a lot of us wrong.

Thought this might be a good place to discuss others favourite's for doing the little things/playing a less obvious but crucial role in this teams early success.

For what it’s worth

i think Spargo is a link and mostly underrated

I also think Harmes as a tag on a better player. Or even and to my surprise

AnB  and Melky play their part.

The first time I heard a reference to playing a role was when Paul Roos discussed the 2005 Sydney premiership team.

He spoke glowingly about the role played by the CHB Lewis Roberts-Thompson who nearly won the Norm Smith.

Roos explained that all LRT had to do was compete in the air and deny his opponents and it was the role of the smaller players to then win the ball on the ground. Not only did he compete but he also won more than his fair share of the ball.

Finally the dees have twigged to Roos's message. Build a team and then implement a game plan and structure where each player plays his role. That's why Brayshaw, Fritsch, Spargo and ANB keep getting games even when there are perceptions (and criticisms on DL) that they don't contribute - they play their designated roles to perfection. Either get the ball and deliver with purpose and style or deny the opposition.

Go dees.

I saw this space cadet on Facebook talking about Brayshaw this morning

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • GAMEDAY: Gold Coast

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
