Fancy that, not one demon on the list.  2 rising star nominations.

However, very happy with Riv, jacko and Kozzie as recruits.  Saw enough to like what is coming through. Thoughts in the selections?

I think we had 3 of 18 rising star nominations to be fair...

or maybe it was 2... cant recall if Rivers got the nod but he was thereabouts if he didn’t get it officially

Corrected original post, thanks for the spot.  I think it was 2, but Riv deserving for both individual games and body of work.

The other thing to consider is the quality of our batch just above that age bracket. ‘22’ is just an arbitrary number really... I think the list is in a pretty healthy spot, they just need to fill in the gaps within the next couple of years and that is more likely to be with more experienced players as they’d be expecting to be challenging for a flag in May & Gawn’s time.

Not an issue for us at all - Clarry, Trac, Gus, Langdon, Lever and Weid (amongst others) are all under 25 and JL, Kossie and Rivers all looked good this year.

I'd be more worried if I followed the Crows, Hawks, Nth or Sydney, all finished bottom 4 and had no players selected. They haven't got the same level of talent in the 23 - 28 age bracket as what we've got.

What hasn’t helped is some of our more experienced guys have dropped off a perch quicker than we’d have liked (Nev, Jones) and the ‘prime’ of some of our maturing players didn’t last as long as you would have hoped (TMac, Melk, Hibberd)

The best way to make this team is to be in the 2016-2018 drafts.

We traded out of 16 for Weideman and 17/18 for Lever.

But we’ve also taken Fritsch (slightly too old), Spargo, Petty, Sparrow, Jordon with decent picks in those years.

On talent alone Fritter isn’t far off a lot of the guys in the 22u22. Spargo looks like an AFL player again. Petty and Sparrow both have a fair bit of upside, if they can deliver next year our youth starts looking a lot stronger.

As for making the team - our class of ‘19 have 3 more years to do that.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
