Two tiers. Vic/SA/WA play each other. Tas/NSW/Qld play each other.

Do you think the competition's elite players from Tas/NSW/Qld players would be interested in playing a half-arsed second tier competition?

When Tas fielded standalone teams in the past it was often populated with a lot of local competition players - but that was when the local competition was strong and a legitimate pathway in and out of the AFL. That's not the case now. We had one notable victory against the "Big V" in 1990, but when you look at the Victorian team, it was a shadow of "best possible". If we'd have played a team containing Dunstall, Ablett etc we'd have been annihilated.

From all three states, all the AFL players would all be picked by default, and if they're not available then the quality of available players will fall away quickly. It would soon descend in to a farce. For it to be interesting for the players from the minor states, they'd have to have the opportunity to play the major states, but that would then create the issues raised in my previous post.

...and this is exactly one of the big problems faced last time they tried it.

SOO ultimately died here because it was a big yawn and when the AFL became national that was the end. The fans, clubs and players almost all gave it the thumbs down. Club culture in AFL is rich and strong unlike rugby where it is a fringe sport pretending it is a major sport. Just like dull Olympic sports which need externalised competition to stir up primeval parochialism in a circus environment to generate any interest. Never liked SOO when it was around and don't miss it. We have the perfect game and why mess with it with lesser silly glorified exhibitions which will only degenerate the game?

It’s been a season of grit, growth, and glimpses of brilliance—mixed with a few tough interstate lessons. Now, with finals looming, the Dees head to Kardinia Park for one last tune-up before the real stuff begins.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
