Box Hill Hawks v Casey Scorpions

Featured Replies

Newton wasn't outstanding from my point of view. Was a little surprised to see him named among the best.

JKH was hot and cold. Can't help but think he chooses when he wants to go and when he doesn't.

The best for mine were Riley Salem and Bail. Riley was just tough and competitive all day. I'm sure the conditions (muddy ball, sticky centre wicket) suited his style and not sure he would have been as inmoressive on a cleaner AFL ground. But he deserves credit for going hard and never giving up in a one-sided game.

How about some of these VFL player reviews from Plapp - http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2015-08-10/vfl-player-review-round-17

Riley - got some contested ball but needs to work on effectiveness of disposals.

McKenzie - did a tagging role but didn't have enough output.

Newton - needed to get more of the ball.

Terlich - endeavour was good but didn't get the right balance between offence and defence.

Jamar - good at bounces/stoppages, nothing anywhere else.

Heard this all before, haven't we.

I guess it's just one VFL game, but these players haven't been able to improve on the areas they were sent to Casey for in the first place, and some of them have been at Casey for a long time now.

Whilst I agree, it is frustrating to see it after a poor loss, the point that you have made about hearing it all before is a bit stiff, especially for Jamar who for the last 6-7 weeks has been putting in excellent form only to be held out by Gawn doing really well in the AFL. Sure he may have had a poorer game this week, but no reason to dig the boot in.

Fair enough.

I read most of the reviews the same way as you, though I beg to differ on the Riley assessment. It reads pretty positively to me, albeit still with the disposal weakness he needs to work on. The full review for Riley is:

"Aidan Riley: Aidan was good. He had 35 possessions and four effective tackles. Aidan was really positive and influential around the stoppages. He won numerous critical contests, but let himself down a couple of times with missed kicks and the effectiveness of his disposals. Aidan really tried over the course of the game."

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.

The Demons return to the scene of the crime on Saturday to face the wooden spooners the Eagles at the Docklands. Who comes in and who goes out? Like moving deck chairs on the Titanic.

It's Game Day and there are only 5 games to go. Can the Demons find some consistency and form as they stagger towards the finish line of another uninspiring season?
