I reckon all the game last night showed is how close the competition is this year from 4th onwards. This feels to me like an unusually even year which will have quite a few twist and turns, it'll probably have a lower number required for teams to make the 8 than last year as well, it could come down to percentage at the end.

Could of, should of but didn't. The facts are we lost to GWS, Bulldogs, WCE, Saints, GCS and Sydney, three of those teams will be in the bottom 5 with us and Brisbane, two will finish in that 7-12 area on the ladder and one is a top 6 team. Adelaide is another team that will be around 7-12 on the ladder.

I think over the next 8 weeks we get a true indication on if our team has improved we have a run now of teams that are looking to finish in the top 8, Richmond, Port, Collingwood, Essendon, North, Bulldogs, Fremantle, Geelong then Port again. The bulldogs are the only team that definately won't play finals footy, Essendon, Richmond and north will be like WCE 7-12.

You don't expect to win many over the next 8 weeks, we just can't get blown away.

The games against Richmond, Collingwood, Essendon and North (plus the later games against North and West Coast) stand out for me.

Whilst I don't want to see big 100 point beltings, I'm not going to be too fussed if we're soundly beaten by Hawthorn, Geelong, Fremantle or Port Adelaide. They're all a lot better than us. But those other clubs I mentioned (maybe being harsh on Collingwood here) are more middle of the road style sides, and we should be able to hang with them for most of the game.

It's Game Day and the Demons return to the MCG after a dismal performance in Gather Round to face the reigning dual Premiers Brisbane. What do expect to see from the Dees today?

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.

Melbourne’s much vaunted finishing power evaporated at Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon, exposed for the third time in four years by its Essendon Gather Round hoodoo.
