with the resultant failings of our young Key players over the last 15 years, I'd like to see us return to grounding our young key position players in defence from the start.

Its had plenty of success over the journey, & now we see that after the experience of playing & gaining form down back, both Frawley & even Dunn has grown into players.

Now with self-belief they have both given great service thus far, when thrown up into the forward half.

I've rather us take this approach with our tall Key kids as they ready for their first games.

what could have been with watts having to earn his first games the hardway at VFL, & then play as a defender, responsible for an opponent from the start.

he could have gone forward when strong & confident, & well conditioned in AFL.

starting kids up front in a poor side, can really hurt their development IMO.

Maybe in some cases but on the whole I don't agree.

Players like Hogan and Fitzpatrick who've already shown their dominance up forward in the VFL should be playing forward in the firsts, not back. I'd much rather have Hogan playing forward rather than do a Frawley and play him in the backline for 8 years first.

Dunn was a different story as he struggled to find a position, playing up forward and in the middle until settling into defence last season.

this is my point.

so many players started down back, (Not for 8 years) Neitz, Lyon, Roos, Alistair Lynch. many.

Neita played a couple of years before going forward.

I'm Not suggesting for years. I'm suggesting to do it until they get accustomed to AFL, & then deemed ready, by Roosy.

alpha males have an advantage over more shy types, but it still doesn't hurt.

patience is beneficial.

No, he didn't and I'm sick of reading that tripe. He started forward

What both he & Schwartz did was start in he forward pocket. Not as focal points.

When Hogan comes in I'd hope he's primarily used in a 3rd tall forward role - much like WCE did with Darling

as key position player he was at CHB. played on Carey often in the first couple of seasons.

I don't recall Neita playing in a pocket. If he did, thats OK as well, as he's not getting monstered from the get go.

Schwarta was different to Neita, more of an attacking mentality, with a natural have a go attitude. neita was more a shy type.

Re last sentence.... Hogan will be more like Schwarz so we will play him forward?

How would have this benefited Jeremy Cameron, or Jonno Brown?

Don't think this should be a blueprint, other to say that players have to be adaptable.

The point is, it is refreshing that we finally have a coach who is pragmatic with his multi-dimensional-mobile talls. Welcome to modern football.

I'll leave these decisions with Paul Roos...

Where's the fun in that? Half the fun in being a forum member is being able to pretend we're all experts and put forth our ideas.

I understand he's more the alpha male type, but its still worth talking about. especially now with Frawley able to go forward, & with Dawes back in.

A couple of Demonland Trackwatchers braved the rain and headed down to Gosch's paddock to bring you their observations from the second day of Preseason training for the 1st to 4th Year players. DITCHA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I attended some of the training today. Richo spoke to me and said not to believe what is in the media, as we will good this year. Jefferson and Kentfield looked big and strong.  Petty was doing all the training. Adams looked like he was in rehab.  KE

2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield.
