Champion Data: Round 1 v St. Kilda

Your club's best 22 for round one, week two

TOTAL PLAYER RATINGS VALUE: 4904 points

TOP PLAYER: Jack Steven, 508 points

TOTAL PLAYER RATINGS VALUE: 4988 points

TOP PLAYER: Nathan Jones, 401 points

Lists the best 22 with a comment then adds up the player ranking points for a grand total. By the way we are second lowest above the Saints and obviously only lower than them due to Montagna being suspended.

As for the ranking points it sure shows how important it will be for us to get young midfielders games and playing well. We'll hopefully have Viney, Tyson, Toumpas and Michie all playing from very little AFL experience this year and Watts with no midfield experience but by the end of the year they all have the talent to be the foundations of a great group.

Another thing I'd say about the rankings is they show how important Jack Steven is for the Saints. Especially with Montagna out he really is there number 1 midfielder and is very dangerous.

Back on to the best 22 I think the saints defense can be above average and curtail our improved forwards while at the other end we can stop their forwards. So it will come down to winning the midfield battle. If the rankings are anything to go on it should be an even game

I think the Saints' defence is very average (they've only added second stringers) and will get smashed by our forwards if we move it quick through the middle.

Steven will struggle next year, teams always tagged Del because of his disposal (they started copying Lyon cause they reckon he was on to something). Steven will now get the hard tag.

Champion data stats work better in hindsight when they work out what happened and make up a stat for it.

Delaney and Bruce are second stringers sure but they could very well curtail Dawes and Clark, both of whom are unlikely to be in top form. It's Dempster, Fisher, Geary and Roberton that I rate in the defense.

I thought Steven got the tag most times this year. He'll certainly miss Montagna and Dal Santo drawing attention regardless of who got the tag. Hopefully he's quiet against us but I'm hoping Lenny Hayes can get back to some decent form despite his age. He played last season coming off heart surgery. That's full on commitment right there.

And yes all stats are better that way! But I would say adding Vince and Cross only seems to get us near the ball park of other teams. Adding Mummy and Shaw has taken GWS above us. It's the fact that the impact Michie and Tyson particularly could have as ready to go midfielders that hasn't shown up in the rankings yet.

Stats are nice if you're into that sort of stuff, but stats can't tell how cohesive a team will be, especially as both teams have new coaching set-ups.

These stats are for each players last 40 games. So keep in mind that players like Terlich, M Jones, Viney, Tyson, Hogan, Toumpas, Michie will greatly increase their scores. Plus, with our terrible game plan and ineffective footy for the last few years I think most players should start averaging a little bit more purely by (hopefully) less errors and flowing play.

Neither of those will have a show against Clark.

Fisher, who is probably past his prime is the only one I really rate although Dempster does his job.

Lenny has gone one year to many.

Tyson will have a big impact.

I couldn't care less about GWS and what the stats show.

I think this is right.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
