Magner and Couch

Stupid rule

OK, the answer seems to be as follows (from http://www.aflpa.com.au/images/uploads/AFL_Rules_-_Feb_2013_FINAL.pdf):

The total primary list size is now 40 (potentially some exceptions for the new clubs). If you have 39 senior players, you can nominate one rookie to fill the gap; if you have 38, you can nominate two rookies. Our list having 40, we didn't have room for a rookie prior to Round 1.

The only other ways to get a rookie onto the senior list, then, are the Long Term Injury rule (promote a rookie in place of someone on the LTI), or, it seems, to nominate a rookie mid-season. The rules say that you can nominate a rookie after Round 11 of the season, and they are then eligible to play for the remainder of the year, provided you can fit their payment under the salary cap (Player Rule 21.11).

So, it seems that, unless and until we get a long term injury, neither Magner nor Couch, nor any other rookie, can get a game until Round 12 at the earliest.

Indeed, thanks HFF.

Thanks for the info but stupid rule.

Thanks for the info but stupid rule.

The big one is Dwyer at Collingwood.

He's killing it but it'll be a shame if he has to return to the rookie list when Broomhead recovers.

Mind you, he has glandular fever. The Pies will probably just leave him on the LTI list, claiming that the glandular is ongoing.

All this talk about Magna being slow is ridiculous. He showed plenty last year before being played in a negative role.

Yes, VFL is not at the same level as AFL, however, he and Couch clean up in VFL.

Magna should be drafted in this years draft, play him when he plays his best football, and that WILL equate to more clearences in our favour.

Couch should also be elevated if room on the senior list permits.

Sorry Magner is a good depth player capable of coming in a doing a job in the AFL. He'd be a nice rotation through the midfield....BUT Couch isn't up to AFL and unless he starts truly dominating VFL I'm happy for us not to bother much with him. A game or two at the end of the season should be enough. No point continuing with the same players who aren't up to it when their are always others out there.

I love it how everyone has the definitive encapsulation of a guy who's played 17 games....

Your a board clogger.

Mate you really think Boak would've come to us, when an offer was on the table from Geelong? Never. If he was coming back to Melbourne, it wasn't too our club.

Don't understand why people think every player is driven by money. Not everyone is like Clark.

Did you think Clark would?

We payed overs for Dawes.

We certainly could have gone real hard for a top line mature Mid. and could have thrown in some steak knives last year.

No. You're.

Double use in that post, so not a clogger, actually quite efficient.

Its hard to say if we payed overs for Dawes, he hasnt played yet.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
