Enough with wanting to pick up other clubs rejects

Rivers will be missed, if he leaves, as he is an intelligent and competent defender.

Of the others mentioned as possibly going, will they be greatly missed? Jurrah could have more problems outside football. Will he ever play top level football again? Moloney's attitude and love for the club he supported as a kid seem to have diminished.

We all saw the difference that Clark made in the first half of this season. Another 'top' signing would make a huge difference. We might not be a club that appeals to many players, but money can be very persuasive.

Recruiting marginal players from other sides might well work out. It has at Sydney. Perhaps we would benefit from picking up some 'might be's' and getting rid of our 'never will be's'.

We need to be more competitive to encourage fans to join up as members and to go to matches each week. At the moment most of us would have more enjoyment at the dentist.

I would expect that Neeld will do his utmost to make significant changes to our playing list in the coming weeks.

Moloney, Rivers, Green, Lawerence, Bate and Jurrah. I'm not going to say any more than just listing their names. It should be plainly obvious what they would offer the club if they were all to stay.

How about you name the A Grader who's available that we can't attract. How about we go back a year and relive the signing of Mitch Clark.

By the way I did repeat my point.

Green has retired. Rivers is the only one of the others we would seriously miss. In other times LJ would be a must keep, but he has other serious things on his mind, and has shown the club little respect at all.

You need to read my previous posts before writing anything, you've completely misinterpreted what I am saying

Why Neeld in Caps?

Melbourne's worry is the exodus of arguably our best players for the reason of discontent. Rivers(looks gone), Moloney and Jurrah just to name 3. It's speculation but others will follow. "Neeld can mould into his thinking". What does that mean? Apart from "rejects" and some young draftees, i.e. Viney, who is coming? To compound the worry is who would want to come in this climate? Sellar types aren't going to get us up the ladder.

Would be better off keeping Rivers(our best defender) and letting Sellar go. Problem here is obvious. No other team would touch Sellar with a barge pole.

Thank the Lord you aren't involved in list management.

You better buckle up because more NQR's are going to be shown the door over the next few years.

You're just not getting it mate. We are an unattractive proposition for A graders, even despite the cash. We need to get better players than what we have so we can improve, and once we get to the stage where we win more games than we lose then we will be the kind of club that attracts top players.

Mitch wasn't an A grader when we went for him, he MAY be that now, it's debatable. Who else did we get last year? Sellar, Magner, Couch... Decent players who can play roles and help us improve. That is where we are at.

I'm trying not to jump in on you're argument - but I read this and wasn't sure if this was a point against or a point for

All the players you have named above are NQRs, good players on their day (note i used their day - ie when conditions are suit them) but you won't see me shedding a tear with their depatures. We need mature bodies I am not arguing with you there - but we need to target the right people as well to lead this club.

None of those MFC players are 'Top 50' rated, none of them are consistent and none of them will leave a massive hole at the MFC. (Apologies to Greeny - you are a club champion but even you laser left boot was letting you down lately).

To end my little rant - Neeld has elected to rebuild this list - it won't happen overnight in 1 offseason, if we don't get the FA we want we will go to draft or trade, and maintain development.

We are going to need a lot of good luck this offseason if we are gong to be competitive this year

My point wasn't really about the quality of players, it was more about the fact that we are (yes, I'll say it again) and UNATTRACTIVE club to the top players.

We have little chance of getting any "big fish" until the little fish we can get improve our performances enough to offer success.

OK lets look at some of the players mentioned on this site:

Shannon Byrnes - contributed to a premiership

Scott Gumbleton - has proven that he is injuury-prone, but can kick goals when fit

Koby Stevens - starved of oppurtunities, but certainly has some potential to be a quality player

Cam Pedersen - proven gun at VFL level, never really been given a genuine shot at AFL

Josh Caddy - tough midfielder who has been developing ok in a side he cleary hasn't wanting to be playing for

Sharrod Wellingham - he might not be Swan or Pendlebury or Beams or Thomas or Sideass, but he is a cog in the machine that is the collingwood midfield.

Living in "fantasy land" is thinking that Melbourne can just simply buy the best players. At this point in time, Melbourne is (or one of) the most undesirable club to play at.

Richmond, and I really do hate to say this, are a club that we should be drawing some inspiration from. Guys like Grigg, Houli and Maric aren't exactly 'big fish', but are players who were deprived of game-time at their original club and are now regulars in the tiges best 22. I have no problem whatsoever, if the club were to take a risk on some of the players mentioned on this site. We have nothing to lose, and cannot get any worse.

Great post. I'm glad it's not just me trying to knock down the brick wall with my head.

Anyway back on subject - there is a lot of talk of picking anyone up on thie forum - and some scare mongering about we are de-listing so many so we'll have to pick up more rejects....

Neeld has come out and said that he'll target players they want at the club - I'll continue to back his judgement to the extent he starts building a competitive list.... It is noteworthy that we did lose a lot of games this year - but there were only a couple there we were truly un-competitive and had no chance

You had me until that bit.... Maybe revisit the season a bit mate.

I am glad Beamer doesn't read this board, what justification do you have for your comment above, I had a good chat to him at the B&F it is killing him to leave, but he wants to leave on his own terms

Agree with you in that respect - I don't think the MFC is that attravtive at the moment either.Money and opportunity talk though (see Mitch Clarke).... but in saying that I don't think there are any 'Big Fish' apart from JP Kennedy out there to have a real crack at this year

And i know JP Kennedy won't leave Sydney to come to Melb - but if we are talking about Big Fish - i'd go after him not Goddard - (and you can agree to terms and trade for a player who are not FA) And in saying all that I know Kennedy will stay in Syd and keep competing for September glory. Just my example of targeting a 'Big Fish'

You had me until that bit.... Maybe revisit the season a bit mate.

Nah fair points - I did get a little carried away I had to finish somehow and that was poor :) :) I did feel we were in a few games this year before we fell over and got blown away

I would like to know what you think is so special about Rivers though??? What does he offer that a Tom Mac or Garland can't cover if he leaves?? Even Sellar could play his role.

Has always had promise J Riv - but never has delivered. Yeh he finished 5th in the B & F this year - what a great year it was...... (excuse my sarcasum)

He's a solid ALF player - but you wouldn't rate him in the top 50 players. Experience is the only thing we're losing here if he leaves and his experience is how to play at a losing soft footy club

I'd be happy for Rivers to stay and think he's a serviceable and honest backman but he's still NQR. Maybe our assessment of our players differs, the assessment of our club certainly does.

You still haven't told me who the A Grader we can't attract is?

Are you serious mate? Sellar could do Rivers job?!!! That is the single dumbest comment I've EVER read on Demonland.

You bag him out for finishing 5th in the Bluey in a year where he played most games in a totally different position, in a forward line starved of the ball??! RIDICULOUS.

We can't attract ANY of them, so just go through all the re-signs and current FA's that you consider A graders and that will be my list.

it killed me watching him play like he did in 2012. If he feels so bad why did he not pull his weight?

Since 186 Beamer has been elsewhere.

Haha speak for yourself mate - over reaction of the year goes to Stuie - J Rive is a role player and nothing more...........

I'll give you that J Riv was one of our better talls this year but he is no match winner/he is a stopper who has below AFL standard disposal and kicked a few goals - Luke McGuane/ Brad Miller esc anyone???

Please brother stop kidding yourself - there are only a few blokes on our list who can hold their heads high this year - J Riv is one them - but he came 5th, T Mac finished higher then him - who you trying to kid me or yourself??? J Riv is an average AFL player

Just so much idiocy in one post...

Firstly, Rivers played at the OPPOSITE end of the ground that he's meant to for MOST of the year and you say Tom McDonald is better cos he finished slightly higher in the Bluey even though he played in his natural position all year? Jesus mate, do you know ANYTHING about footy!?

And now you're saying Miller and Rivers are on a par?!! FMD! You have NO IDEA!

Who are they? These A graders we can't attract that all the other clubs can?

Actually the real point of the exercise is to draft a player who can fulfill a role in a team, ala Sydney and now others. A graders aren't going to win you a Premiership just ask Carlton. However to suggest we can't attract them because we're Melbourne isn't correct. The reason it appears we can't attract them so far this year is because besides Goddard there's none available.

By the way Clark is far more important than Rivers who you seem so keen to keep.

Thats what he offers - wowee lets sign him up now for $400k a year

We need experience no doubt - there is no argument there - but lets not handicap ourselves with a ton of below average roll players to obtain it.....

Are you just goint to ignore he kicked 13 goals in those 12 games he played up forward and kicked 6 against GWS

What a game winner

What did he offer in his games down back??? I remember a lot of turnovers..... check out the GWS game in Canberra or wherever and let me know what you think of his effort to chase down Phil Davis - real leader

Should i go on???? [censored] it i got to do some work anyway

I would think that Moloney's form in the games that he played this season would clearly indicate a fall in attitude towards the club.He didn't play or have the demeanour of what the 2011 club best and fairest should have, in my opinion.I would prefer him to stay, but he would need to overcome the negative vibes he is displaying on the field. A return to his form of 2011 would be great. I do hope this happens with us, but I doubt this will be the case.As for him reading my post, they are my opinions and they were expressed in a manner that were intended to reflect my thoughts. They were not for the purpose of 'player bashing'. In fact I would doubt that Moloney could seriously challenge what I said.

It's not because we're Melbourne, it's because we have no chance of playing finals and that's what A grade players want, a shot at a premiership.

Ummmm last time I checked, Geelong, Collingwood, Hawthorn all have their fair share of A graders....

I agree Clark is more important than Rivers, I LOVE MItch, he became my favourite player in record time, but you can't doubt Rivers importance at the other end. He showed in the first half of the year he's a smart and consistent player still, and is a severely underrated linchpin in our defence, as well as being a great leader by example. I won't be devastated if Rivers leaves, but it will hurt us more than you seem to realize.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
