Williamstown v Casey Scorpions

Here is my take on the game yesterday:

HOWE - Has definately earned a spot for the dees next week. He was strong whenever the ball was around him and can take a great mark. I would be dissapointed if he does not play next week - espescially with some of the blokes currently running round in the dees forward line!!!

GAWN - Had a great game and has really come a long way. He was strong in the ruck but was most impressive around the ground. Took some good marks and was agile for a big bloke.

SCULLY - I think he would come straight back in to the dees team after his game. He ran very hard and positioned himself very well. He didnt have heaps of game time but made the most of when he was on and actually played more than what I thought.

STRAUSS - Made more of an impact as the game went on but still has a bit of work to do. His skills were good when he got the footy, but needs to get more of it.

BLEASE - Was involved in some very good pieces of play and impressed me for most of the game. It was great to see him in the guts with Sculs and Gawn teaming together with Blease winning a couple of clearances. He kicked a great goal and must be close to a debut. I would like to see him working harder off the ball but he did throw up 3 times in the 3rd Quarter so maybe he is working harder than I thought.

WONA - Dissapointed in his game. Didnt do alot and I believe he should be able to tear up a game like yesterdays when he wants to - its just a bit of an attitude problem for Wona

Certain Ins - Howe

Possible Ins - Gawn, Blease, McDonald

Scully?

Can Max Gawn go with the experienced ruckmen at Essendon?

I think it's a matter of necessity if we want to avoid the sort of spectacle we saw last night. The kid's a big ruckman and Newton as backup is a major fail.

(note: I'm Max's sponsor at the club but there's no bias in my views)

I agree if he is ready - I think he shows more promise than Sandilands or Cox showed at the same time of his career. RR stated he thought Cox did well in the Colts games but this guy is just burning in the second best comp of football. BUT I do not want him to play until he is ready. Take a 5 year contact out on his sponsorship WJ- you'll get great milage IMO..also note many big men take a good two years to fully recover from a knee. WHAT A FUTURE IS INSTALLED FOR MAGIC GAWN.

Now let's not get too carried away. He's played two very good games in a row in what might be the second highest tier of the game but it still is a fair way below AFL standard.

That said, he held his own against Ben Hudson who had several years of AFL experience on Max (although Max has 10cm height advantage).

This is why I would not have had any issues with Max having played in Melbourne's last two games because the circumstances were such that his presence would have stretched the opposition ruckmen and therefore created what might have been a point of difference in our favour for once. I'm a big believer in doing things like that - especially when you're starting behind the 8 ball with injuries as we were last week.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
