Who will be the sub?

No doubt this will turn in to a Watts-bashing forum, hopefully some can refrain from doing so.

I would really hate to see Jack get dropped from this weeks team, but agree with the majority, he isn't in great form. With that in mind, I think the perfect "punishment" for him this week will be to make him the sub. However...

Similar to Morton, I don't think Jack is the perfect impact player yet. Where the issue lies, is with the fact that in our usage of the sub so far this year, we seem to be waiting until 3/4 time, or at the earliest, late in the third quarter to unleash the sub. Will this be enough time for Jack to have such an impact that it warrants him keeping his spot in the 1's?

Personally, if we make Watts the sub, I'd like to see him come on about 15 minutes in to the third, thus giving him a quarter and a half to stamp some authority on the game, especially considering our opposition's maturity. Can harm our rotations if we bring him on too early.

On the other hand, are we better to say to Jack, "you're playing against kids this week, you owned them when you played against them in the juniors, now go out and do it again", and give him a full game. As I am a Qld'er, and don't get to see many games live each year, I'd love to see Jack play the entire game, just in case I was there the day the penny dropped!

The big advantage of playing him this week, is that we have the bye next week. Basically, if he performs well on Sunday, he gets next week off, if he doesn't, he'll be trotting around Casey for the week, and may find himself there for a couple of weeks if he's not careful.

If Jack starts, then who do we think should get the safety vest for a few quarters? I'd suggest Strauss. While I'm not a fan of his, it'd give him 45 minutes against a group of kids to get some confidence.

Thoughts...

this could be the walkover that will allow him to finally have a break out game

I say no change to the side

Weather permitting, I wouldn't object to having Wattsy as the sub.

He struggles BIG TIME in wet and slippery conditions (as most young talls do!!).

If it's wet, use him as the sub and see what he can do as he comes on midway through the 3rd. If it's dry... give him another full game against the 'newbies'.

HOWEVER, I wouldn't mind seeing what the ever-dangerous Aussie Wonaeamirri could do as sub!! Comes on halfway through the third, fresh as a daisy around goals... could be mindblowing!!!

Yes, but the Q was who will be the sub, or are you saying you'd have Morton sub for 2 weeks in a row? That can't be good.

To be honest, I would keep Jack in. Jack is a confidence player. I think playing against a fresh back 6 could really help him have a break out game.

I would like Maric to pinch the sub off Morton (IMO Morton had zero impact last week). Maric had a blinder at Casey, and is another player that could build his season on a break out performance against the GC.

If anything, we should be looking to sit any guys that are less that 100% fit for this game and let kids like Watts get another game (and likely win) under their belts.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.

The Demons return to the scene of the crime on Saturday to face the wooden spooners the Eagles at the Docklands. Who comes in and who goes out? Like moving deck chairs on the Titanic.

It's Game Day and there are only 5 games to go. Can the Demons find some consistency and form as they stagger towards the finish line of another uninspiring season?
