I don't know why, besides having a week where he "only" kicked 2 goals, people suddenly say Green is the outside chance. Also... since when will another player who was more "consistent" beat him to that spot? He would be probably the most consistent player in the AFL! Certainly in his position. His weakness is that he hasn't kicked a bag of 12, or 10, or even 6. He's scored 0 goals once :o and 1 goal 4 times. That's pretty amazing. He's also been one of, probably, 3 main players that can be considered chiefly responsible for a team that nearly missed the finals.

The HUN putting Stevie J in there is wrong IMO, despite the fact he's kicked a few more. How much help does he want, and how much footy has he missed? Also, Green has averaged more disposals, marks and tackles.

But then... I guess Stevie J. has kicked more. At the moment, I think he's his main competition. Brad won't catch LeCras, I don't think.

I recall Robbo kicking a mass of goals a few years back and missing out to the more accepted big names in the game. Often the name players are selected even though others have had better seasons.

BULLDUST!!!! Sandilands and Cox ring a bell???

Both that year had better years than Jamar has done this year... I have my fingers crossed for jamar, green & chip!

Interesting. I was under this impression that this was rarely the case, but over the last three seasons there has been a ruck on the bench twice (three times if you count Goodes last year). Now I'm wondering where I got the notion that they don't pick a reserve ruck?

I think the real danger is that they pick the side reflective of the year. That is, if there was a lot of success in sides who played a sole ruckman... or more specifically if it becomes the TREND to play a sole ruckman, with a pinch-hitting KP player as your backup, then yes... they might go with one. It'll take someone with more time than me to look over EVERY game and see what each side went with.

Jamar should get in but they never pick 2 ruckman, Lets remember a few years back they picked Pav as full back just to fit him in...

That's just not true. They often pick 2.

Oh I remember it well. But we don;t know for sure if it was because it was his first year of nomination. Maybe they felt he was a beneficiary since other players were out, and he was a target more often. I think it shows, more importantly, that they look at context first. They don't just select the six forwards who kicked the most goals, and be done with it. They take a LOT of things into account. I'm confident that the more you assess the seasons of Green, Lecras and Stevie J, the more you appreciate that the first two names had better years. Well that's what I reckon anyway...

Frawley appears to be a lock and rightfully so. Jamar I think will be unlucky, outstanding year but there's not much room in the AA team for ruckmen and there has been more than a few stand-out rucks this year.

If that's the case then Jack Reiwoldt is out of the running.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
