Why has Brad Green got the kicking yips

If his last shot had not shaved the post we would have won the game. I am not completely disagreeing with the points made on this thread, i just think you are being a tad harsh on Greeny.

I thought his 2nd half in particuliar was fantastic.

His output of 0.3 one shot falling short and one kick straight up in the air (it was on his right foot, he has no right foot) undermines the points you make. He was there to do a job and only did half of it IMO.

Personally, I think Green sometimes gets too close to the man on the mark when kicking for goal. Especially 40-45m+ out from goal. I think this creates some inconsistencies in elevation, therefore leads to inaccuracy. This has been mentioned before and even watching last nights replay, Luke Darcy made mention.

I think that was the problem with the kick that fell short. A guy of Green's experience should be smarter than that.

Jack Watts is one IMO that I will start to put down the glasses, hopefully he starts to get more of it as he is a SUPER set shot. Best technique I've seen at the Dees since G Lyon

We kick so few goals that most of Green's possessions are pressure goals for the team outcome. I couldnt think of many players that I would prefer to have kicking for a pressure goal that BG.

Exactly. However in AFL unless you are pummelling the opposition then they are all pressure goals and Green did not meet the mark.

Pressure goals - Not on yesterday's effort. I seem to recall he missed a gettable one in the R2 match in the last quarter too. Dont give it to Bruce though.

Green's leading and marking yesterday was first class. Something we've lacked of late. His kicking hasn't been great all year, and hasn't been as good as it was since he was pushed up onto the wing.

Exactly. To use an out of date expression: Green straightened us up.

I think he just had an off day - although I recall he missed a gettable against the Blues along with several others that also worsened our result that day.

Still, the key miss that could have clinched it was Greeny's and then there was Jones who ran through 50 metres and saw glory, got over-excited it and misskicked the ball, spewing it out to the boundary - THAT could have been the winner also.

What impressed me though was how much better than the Pies was our ball movement with Bate, Dunn, Watts and Miller all pushing up and finding targets downfield.

My suspicion is that Brad Green is injured, and that explains his kicking yesterday. It's not the fact that he missed 4 shots but the way he missed them. I think it was in 2008 that he had a problem with his left foot or heel, which clearly affected his kicking. He began kicking 'up-and-unders' without his usual penetration. His kicking for goal yesterday reminded me of the way he kicked when he had this problem. If this is the case it may explain why he was running so close to the man on the mark at distances which would normally be no problem for him, i.e he was concerned about it.

Compare his kicking from earlier games this year - even where he has missed he hasn't had any trouble kicking it 50+ until yesterday (that bomb against the Brisbane Lions was from inside the square as I remember it)

On paper for the year he is 27 G 17 B so that is not too bad (obviously OOF or not making distance is not reflected in those numbers). His set shot misses severely hurt us yesterday and I think there was another game this year where he couldn't buy a goal from a set shot. If he has another shocker from set shots then (by his standards) I agree he may have the yips. He still played positive football yesterday though. If there is any injury niggle (hypothetical based on a previous post) then hopefully a couple of weeks break can help iron it out.

It hurts even more so in that I have a slab with a Collingwood supporter at start of the year that we would get to 8 wins this year....I fear that I will be looking back on these Collingwood games as I hand over that slab!

Correct. He is often overrated as at set chot for goals eminating from his terrific effort against Carlton in the 2000QF. Not unreasonably he has not been able to sustain it over his career. But he is not above the pack when shooting for goal. Has missed a number of gettable shots over the journey.

You've missed my point. That's true of everyone. The BEST kicks at goal going around wax and wane. They have a season of 60-65%+ or thereabouts... Then they follow it up with a season of just over 50% a couple of years later and in effect it all evens out. Lloyd is the only one I saw who was pretty much a metronome. And even his accuracy wasn't ridiculously high in comparison to his contemporaries.

Neitz was not a good example. If ever there was a hot and cold goal kicker it was Neitz.

You've got to be kidding. His kicking for goal was poor. Lets not forget the shot from 50 metres than ended 10 metres out. His kicking crucified our day. We needed someone to cap off the good work further up the ground. He failed his end of the deal.

And I am sure no one more than Brad Green would recognise that.

While today was a bad day, Green does have tendency to miss the set shots. People often confuse his silky kicking skills for what can be a ordinary end result.

he is a much better kick on the run than a set shot. I don't think he was terrible - his marking was outstanding as a fast leading forward, a role we desperTely need, but we do need him to finish it off. More practice with the right technique is the answer. We need someone who k owe how to kick to come down to take a look at his technique on a one off basis to correct those little mistakes which sometimes creep in just like a golf pro gets a specialist to look at his swing on occasions. It need not be a threat to our current coaching set up, but s freshpair of eyes could be quite useful.

Three extra goals on Monday would have Bern match winning, and isn't it worth it to swallow a bit of pride at timesto get overall improvement?
