Well, being twenty feet from many of his contests, I thought he work his arsed off. He probably had 5 or 6 tackles and in the last quarter when it looked like we were coming, he was the one holding the ball in our forwardline. I thought his defensive pressure was excellent. He still needs kicking lessons, but he worked a lot harder than many give him credit for, therefore 1 vote. That said, it would be difficult to come up with 7 or 8 players that played well on Sunday. We didn't have many.

But I disagree with you. I thought he did nothing other than show the football world that he is nothing better than an average VFL player. He still doesn't impose himself, he can't kick (which seems like a fundamental problem with his game that he mightn't be able to fix), he doesn't get enough of the ball, he doesn't move well, he doesn't have good body language, and he doesn't look like a forward even though he is one.

If I had to find a positive it would be his tackle count, but really, I'd prefer him to lay 0 tackles and kick 4 goals.

Name the last MFC forward who layed 6 tackles including 1 that provided a goal. Identify a better pack mark than the one he took. And he made position several times for what would be gimme goals, but even Davey, for some reason, just couldn't deliver easy passes to him.

Like I said, tackling is good for a big fella, but I'd prefer him to be kicking goals.

The occasional pack mark isn't enough to sustain an AFL career as a full forward.

I agree that it's not always easy being a forward in a team like ours where the delivery is terrible, but on the whole, Newton's impotence up forward is his doing, not the midfield's.

I think he imposed himself, via his tackle count and general defensive pressure. Whilst, the body language comment is purely down to a lack of confidence.

Matty Bate had 7 tackles two games in row this year, in our two most recent wins, AND he kicked 2 goals 1 in each, AND he had an assist in both games.

The next week he had 4 tackles and kicked 3 goals.

If Newton played "bloody well" how is Bater going?

That's right, you have already stated that he isn't up to it.

You are marking Newton so high because his base is so low.

Judge him against what he should be doing and not compared to what he used to give.

With that in mind, he was satisfactory on the weekend.

I thought Newton played alright on Sunday, I was at the game and took note of his defensive pressure and his presenting. One of Newton's previous flaws was that he was lazy and just worked off his marking and reading of the play, he has improved this significantly, just read the reviews by Peter German. He can read the play wonderfully but his delivery is awkward. He is improving and is still very young for a key forward although he is an awful kick but if remember correctly so was Robertson in 2003 (??) but after a preseason of kicking practice this improved significantly, hopefully if Newton stays on the list he can follow in a similar style

I wouldn't say that's one of his strengths, to be honest, but each to their own.
