melbournes future is not secure,he is right,none of us know what the number one draft pick is worth .if it turns out to be a judd,ablett,riewoldt or franklin,we miss it and eventually merge or move he may well be right.

I agree.

Fwiw, we will not be 'finished' if it doesn't work out the way most want it, we'll probably be just another side that falls short, again. However, what we won't have is - arguably - a stronger list. To be a contender for a Premiership down the track you need a strong list with quality players. If there is 5 or more wins we miss the opportunity to gain 2 of the best available for the draft. We would therefore miss that advantage over other sides.

And by doing that, with the Gold Coast and West Sydney on the horizon, there might not be a better chance to drink at the well (draft time) of young talent for sometime, than right now.

Ok, I can see you're obviously passionate about the issue and are very much concerned with the future of our club which is always a good thing to see, but I do think it's a bit of a stretch to suggest that the long term viability of the club hinges on gaining the first pick in the upcoming draft. No doubt Scully will be a valuable asset for the club both on and off the field, but if not getting him means that the club will ultimately fold, then we're in more trouble now than a mere number one draft pick could possibly do to help. I think we're doing ok, not great, but ok. We'll be right mate.

Not to rain on your parade, but if we were to be giving up a priority pick, it would before the first round not after it. All the more reason that we need to gain such a valuable pick. Forget the additional good player, imagine the amount of supporter revolt should those in control at MFC decide to be too proud and ultimately too stupid to gain the priority pick.

Looking at the pro's and cons of this priority pick. If we are to get it, sure the player might turn out to be a dud, but then again (and lets remember it's scully) he is more likely to become a very serviceable player.

If we do give up the pp (god forbid), we will never know what could have been.

In conclusion there is nothing to lose if we gain the pp, but there could be a huge amount to lose if we are naive enough to skip the pp. There is only cons should we skip it, and only pro's should we gain it.

Sorry, but I think the writing is on the wall ...

IMHO our future is based solely in the hands of the AFL. The formula is simple: the AFL will sacrifice a melbourne based team to ensure the Gold Coast & the new Sydney team. Lets not make it us.

Hence my "naive" comments ... Many around here just cant see it ... if we dont make money the ever esculating costs of running an AFL team will strangle us. The only way to overt this is have the team to force the AFL to give us a better draw. The only way to improve our team is via the draft ... now over recent years its becoming more apparent the "science" of drafting is a formula ... so much less un-predictable with more & higher draft picks.

Lets face it ... if we add Blease, Strauss, Garland plus Scully and 2 more top quality kids we get the chance to elevate ourselves.

We need to elevate ourselves above teams like the teams that currently sit around us in the long-term ... the short term is irrelevant.

If the Dees miss this year ... sadly I just feel the next chance will not appear in enough time to save us.

So sorry this is not "Melodramatic" much more realistic in IMHO
