Hawks Post Record Profit

Just a quick article I saw on sportal http://sportal.com.au/AFL-news-display/rec...for-hawks-60326

Hopefully the Melbourne board can take note on how the Hawks have reinvented there club and take some encouragement out of it . Because Hawks were in a similar situation to us and look they now have a 4 million dollar profit and a premiership flag to go along side that. The article also reinforce how important it is for membership is to the clubs. Also I thought it was a smart idea how they published out some goals with their "five2fifty". I know we have debt demolition but maybe we could publish some of our long term goals both on and off the park?

Any thoughts

They should thank the Tasmanian Govenrment for bank rolling them and their community minded poker machines. Its a nice touch for the renowned family club. Membership certainly helps but there are some other kickers to the bottom line you need to focus on.

that's why we need to put emphasis into casey

if we want big profits, u gotta try new things

i dont care how dodgy hawthorn might be considered, they are doing well for themselves

that's we're we should be

I'm fairly sure you completely missed the point of RR's post.

i get the point

tasmania and dirty pokie machines did it for them

if that got us a record profit and a premiership, i would do it anyday of the week

HENCE, we cant just sit there on arse and hope for something to happen...we need to try new things

No Clint's right. you missed it.

The original poster suggested that membership is important and it definitely is. But it was not the sole and only contributor to the profit. Membership is part of the explanation. The margin to a Club off memberships is less than other forms of revenue (eg corporate sponsorship etc). Its a great result for the Hawks. However the Tasmanian Government and Pokies money assisted greatly. They also received $1.1 million for win the premiership.

They have to make hay while the sun shines. How much of the $4 million profit is sustainable longer term? They have an ambitious program to raise $20 million over 4 years to provide business capital. Like a true MFC supporter, I hope they fail. :D

Hawks would still be in debt, and even this year barely turning a profit, except for a couple of million in poker machine revenues and about the same through the sponsorship+game subsisdy from Tassie.

On field, yeah, there are lessons to be learnt from Hawthorn.

Off field, well. In short - that's not the club I want Melbourne to be. Three quarters of poker machine revenue comes from 'problem gamblers'.

I'd actually be pressing for us to cut back our small poker machine holdings - the revenue for us is minimal and I think there would be more value in having a clean reputation in that area. We may even find community groups willing to support our efforts to offset the lost revenue.

You don't want us to be in their off field position? You don't want $4m profits? Absurd... If we don't benefit from poker revenue, then someone else will, the pokies won't just disappear.

You say this rubbish about IF they didn't have Tassie and IF they didn't have poker machine revenue... well new flash for you, they do and they deserve every cent of their profit, just as we deserve every cent of our losses.

ok, i missed the point apparantly

what i am saying, is that (regardless of the point you were making) you pointed out that hawthorns tasmania plan and their pokie machines assisted greatly

and im saying, exactly, we need to have other ways of garnering profit, other than memberships and basic sponsors...just like hawthorn...hence, the casey idea, or the DDD idea etc

Nugget, what is the DDD idea?

Is that Debt Demolition?

edit: that is your "Demon Dollar a Day" idea isn't it? Got it.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
