Herald Sun page 11 has a little par entitled "TURNOVER KING"

"Jordan McMahon was signed by the Tigers over summer to provide dash from half-back, but last night many Richmond fans were questioning what the former Western Bulldog has to offer. McMahon repeatedly turned the ball over with both hand and foot - a problem at Punt Road for years." - Jon Pierek.

Then you turn back to page 10 of the same newspaper under the heading "Scoreboard" and you read in the best players:

"Tigers: Richardson, Johnson, Newman, Deledio, King, McMahon."

Go figure?

does the box with the best players have a byline? was it the same author?

No byline and it's unlikely it was the same author. Still, it's unusual for there to be such a stinging attack on a player in one part of the paper and an endorsement of the same player among his team's best in the same publication. It just goes to show that, as a game, football is funny game and so is the media.

My bugbear has to do with the voting by media 'experts ' who are influenced by final quarter heroics by the winning team , and ignore the earlier quarters where the losing team's players may have dominated , along with the team .

media tend to pick out the 'bigname' players, those who do flashy things, those who get possessions, and those who kick goals.

if you want to get a wrap as a defender you need to be a big name player. if you are a 'james hird' or a 'nathan buckley' media favourite, all you need to do is get a couple of soft touches at a crucial time...

very rarely are the players who win the hardball or who do the 1%'s lauded, but those who do the freakish (a snap over the head for goal), are celebrated as the heros.
