  1. How high have we rated Tyson to call him overrated? Tyson is a smart footballer, yes he makes mistakes like we all do but he more than compliments our midfield as evidenced by his great second half against the Crows. He gets under the oppositions guard when they don't pay attention to him and he contributes offensively.

Just saw the Guthrie incident. Umpire Schmidt should be fined or suspended for being in the wrong position. If Guthrie didn't push him, Schmidt would have impeded an easy mark. Common sense prevailed, which is a rarity for the MRP.

And Vince wasn't pushed into the umpire by Sloane. Vince actually gave Sloane a smack in the chops when the ball was bounced, and lost his way. The fine was appropriate.

It was stated on sen that Guthrie was picked up on audio telling the ump to get out of the way while the ball was in flight to him. Possibly that was taken  into consideration.

Bernie gets a $1,000 fine for a blindsided hit with the umpire - deemed 'careless contact'.

Guthrie gets off for pushing the umpire out of the way and he gets off - deemed "It was the view of the panel the contact was not unreasonable in the circumstances"

I'm convinced the MRP has it in for Demon players.

MRP is cooked, something needs to be done about it! The Ox in disbelief on SEN in regards to Cotchin's jumper punch which was deemed careless. He incurs the same penalty as Bernie for accidentally colliding with an ump. I'm lost for words!

  4. Mundy just topped off the weekend, hilarious!

In the AFL rules book there must be a rule that states Dusty can not be penalised for holding the ball whilst trying to fend off 3 blokes whilst putting  an opponent in a headlock and incorrectly disposing of the ball.

Just watching the replay....was it a goal?

I reckon it hit the post

    Idgaf anyway...

On the slow mo it looks like it took a funny deflection when the ball was near the post, I wondered the same.

His celebration makes me think it went through.

I called it all week that we were a chance to win this. In fact, I said we would win it. And what do you know? That tackling pressure shows us what is possible from this team. What a magnificent effort.

I was out at a 30th birthday tonight. Avoided my phone, the TV and any conversation about the game. Taped it on FOXTEL IQ and came home and watched it without knowing anything. My oh my! This team is going to be bloody special.

The midfield just willed us to win. No. That’s not fair. It was more than that. That doesn’t do it justice. Our midfield crushed the opposition. Absolutely mauled them. Staggering and extremely exciting given Jacobs’ hit out dominance.

Aside from the tackling, the ball use, the dare, the run and carry, it was our leadership that was so pleasing tonight. When the margin was out to 4 goals in the second term, it was Lewis who came crashing in off the back of the centre square, took possession and was tackled. But, we got a reset and it said everything about our desire to turn things our way. Lewis started the game poorly (ball use wise), but grew into the game. He is so dangerous across half forward. Meanwhile, Viney and Jones played real captain’s games. One or two strange errors from Jones (what was he thinking with that torp that landed in the centre square in a Crows’ lap?), but otherwise he really lead the way. Gut running, tackling and organisation. Fantastic. Even Tom McDonald, after really struggling early in defence, his move forward was genius and he looked bizarrely comfortable. He doesn't make those same errors up forward. In fact, he actually showed how clever he can be with his ball use. Staggering! Get him out of the defence and keep him forward!

How about our young mids though? Oliver, Viney, Salem, Petracca and Tyson all lifted in that second half. Salem’s ball use is a delight, as is Oliver’s. Petracca’s bullocking through packs and penetrating kick from midfield is something I haven’t seen at Melbourne in my lifetime (30 years). And how was Oliver’s goal? What a freak and what a [censored] clutch goal! At the time, we were only a goal up and it was an arm wrestle. He kicks that and all of a sudden, there’s scoreboard pressure on the opposition. We didn't look back after that. The kid has already surpassed Cripps. He is an absolute star and has the ability to be a 250 game leader.

Frost and Jetta were brilliant down back and Hibberd’s ball use has become vital in the past month. What a brilliant acquisition he’s been. Really interesting too as I don’t think he’s laid a tackle all month and didn’t again tonight. Staggering, given Goodwin’s emphasis on tackling. I guess, he knows his role as that outside outlet. Oscar did a couple of nice things, as did Wagner, but both have to use the ball better. Wagner in particular. His ball use has been close to terrible since he’s come back. He is getting to really good spots to provide outside run and carry, but I can’t recall him hitting a target tonight. Felt we carried Kent at times too. He can play some really dumb footy and doesn’t lay bloody tackles! Will need to play a lot better next week. Was really pleased with Weideman's game though. He wasn't perfect (that run down near the end was horrible), but his tackling and his ability to bring the ball to ground was brilliant for a second year, skinny KPF.

Anyway, other than a few things here and there (Watts’ marking was ordinary, but competed well in the ruck), that is one of the best wins I can recall. The media might write that Adelaide were off their game, but that was all our pressure and as the game wore on, there was implied pressure and they started to lose confidence.

Some really interesting moves by our coaches too. We clearly identified Atkins as a weaker ball user (in that he doesn't hurt you with his possessions like Smith or Crouch or Laird do) and let him sit out the back of a lot of packs, instead his opponent would outnumber the Crows at the stoppages. It was the sort of move we've had done to us for years, but quite brilliant. It backed our mids to win the clearance and it paid off handsomely. As did the Petracca move into the midfield and Tom McDonald's move forward. There were positives everywhere.

And finally, I hope this will shut up a few wingers and hand wringers on Demonland this week. Yeah, we have to back it up next week, but this shows those people that this is how Melbourne can play. And since some of you need wins before there can be any discernible improvement, well, here's a bloody win!

Goodwin has said since he started that we are building from the contest out. Tonight, we started by winning the contest, spreading hard, playing bold, attacking footy and we smashed the top side on their own patch; one of the hardest places to play in the entire league. Get up and about. This could be season defining! Go you mighty [censored] redlegs!!!

Great summary, wish you wrote some more as I am not ready to sleep yet. In reference to Kent I thought he got more involved as the game went on but in regards to his tackling after watching the replay I'm not sure he actually knows how to tackle.

  7. Let's suggest  CP, Watts, Jeffy and Hannan score around  the 14 goals they scored against the Dons how are we then able to restrict the Crows to less? Can't afford to give one of their forwards six shots on goal like we allowed Joe Daniher  in the first half of that game. Hogan has the ability to roam back and at least block space and tonight with our 3 tall backs all having a man to go to we don't have the luxury of a tall floater in defensive 50. Does anyone think we could use Weed as the man dropping back at times to at least make the Crows think a little about their forward entries? Maybe it's time to give the kid some responsibility.

  8. Tomorrow night was always going to be difficult but I was hoping the effort would be there all day. I still think the boys will give it their all but what little air I had left has just been sucked out of me with Hogan missing. Can someone please make me feel better?

Trengove is smarter, a much better on field leader and a MUCH better ball user than Harmes,

considering a lot of our issues against the hawks seemed to be based around lack of organisation/ on field leadership i think you could make a great case for Trengove if it were as simple as Harmes vs Trenners,

unforunately i can't see him playing unless one of our other inside mids is under a cloud

Valid point Abe, I didn't want to make it a case of Harmes vs Trengove debate because each player has a different skillset they bring to the team. In my opinion I'd rather see games added to our bunch of players around the 20 game mark. Unfortunately I can't see Trengove being the short or long term solution not to any fault of his own though.

  10. I have liked Trengove from the day we drafted him but unfortunately I believe his best is in the past. What could he bring to the team that Harmes can't? If Harmes is fit surely he gets a game before Trengove this week. He's  faster, stronger and can take a mark for his size. Harmes, Kent and Stretch need to play in games like these for the sake of their so called "development".

We are short and not strong in the air, slow to make the second effort .

Generally outbodied today all over the ground.

Outbodied yes, absolutely! Lets play JKH and  Bugg whilst Harmes who's one of our stronger bodies runs around at Casey.

    OUT: O.Mc, JKH, ANB

    IN: Hogan, Kent, Trengove

Hogan in if ready. Three tall defenders aren't required against the Hawks (T.Mc, O.Mc, and Frost).

Kent > JKH who needs to improve his game in the seconds.

Granted ANB was able to curb the influence of Heppell, although he needs to improve offensive output. Trengove is in fine form and deserves a call-up.

We might need 3 tall backs if they bring Vickery in.

Weideman must put a string of good performances together at Casey before he's even considered.

Thank God nobody has suggested Harmes to be recalled.

I think the only change will be Hogan if they think he's ready for JKH.

I would include Harmes before Ben Ken or Trengove, I like the way he goes about it. From all reports, Harmes didn't set the world on fire for Casey on the weekend but do you blame him after busting his guts Monday night against Richmond and then having to back it up on a four day break?

  14. T. Mac going forward would be a serious option now, surely. Didn't he nearly win us the game against this mob a couple of seasons ago when moved there?

At least he can match it with Hurley for strength since we have no one with considerable size left to go forward.

If Daniher is going to have a day out it won't matter who's down back for us.
