All Australian awards have been awarded using current format since 1991 mate, before 1991, All Australians were awarded from form in Sate of Origin matches (the carnival era from 1953-1988), not Home and Away matches. They did have a VFL/AFL team of the Year in the 80s that finished in 1990, in 1991 the VFL/AFL Team of the Year was changed to All Australian Team of the year. Hope this makes sense ?
