There is a bigger issue staring us in the face.

Yes, and as each possible FA declines our offers the threads will continue to become less 'lofty' in their dreams . By October. D.Smith from the Edinhope 2nds will be rumoured as a solid player who could add to the culture of the place. I agree that as well as targetting the draft picks we need to be concentrating on making what we got right. -
Too true . we dont have as far to go as it perhaps looks on the scoreboard every weekend. Its just that the distance we need to go will take a shite load of hard work. The whole list doesnt need replacing . theres a very good core of players that just need some cleverly chosen additions . then surround them with hard working professioanl role players and the dees are away. It will take a couple of years for sure but lets not think the whole list has no future. The future is very bright. but patience is a must

Yes i did. and I also watched the geelong Freo game. Stacks on the mill. Exciting to watch as it was a knockout final and was intense. but the actual play was like very scrappy. Individual games cant be singled out to reinforce or debase my point here. Im referring to the overall direction the game has gone. It needs to be opened up more . It all started with flooding and the press. rotations increased to allow players to be able to cover enough ground to enfoce the press etc. Yes, they are much fitter than they used to be but a reduction in the rotations would force the players to spread out more and not be able to reach every contest. over here in france i only have my dvds from the late 90s and early 2000s to watch so i can see the difference so much more clearly than had i been back in oz the last decade. i hope the rules committee look at this. reduction of rotations and pay early frees around the stoppages to speed up the game. this would stop the whole field being drawn in to the stoppage

Fantastic post. i completely agree. As to the way the game is played I have mentioned it in other posts - teh fact that a once postional game is now a game of 36 midfielders chasing the footy in a pack like a flock of seagulls fighting over a bag of chips. Yes the games can still be exciting if its close and the result of the outcome is meaningful in the sense of ladder position etc, but if its a dead rubber game I find it almost unbearable to watch. In the past, especially the 90's, the footy was fast, very physical but a series of 1on1's or 2on2' contests. , with space for players to get possession and set up play. now its a rolling maul, with space over the back for players to run on to a lucky or rushed kick. really a bit like rugby where the ball will be kicked over the back with the wingers running on to it. Anyway, my question is why isnt anyone complaining about this state of the game and what could be done to bring it back to the more positional style that used to be so entertaining? Perhaps limit the rotations per player to discourage trying to be at every contest? this may spread the field out a bit.

POLL: Who Needs To Go? ... The Fans Decide
Fitz Fitzpatrick replied to Range Rover's topic in Melbourne Demons
very valid point, Toorak -
I have a bit of trust in what Neeld is trying to achieve so personally i feel that Neelds actions will answer whether gysberts is the right type for this club. If Neeld decides to keep him then ill see that as an indication hes got potential. If not, then i believe it means we're not losing much. I agree with neelds style and demands he puts on players. If he doesnt think a player is good enough then ill go with his decision. we're all just passengers on this reality bus trip

yes 45 perhaps youre right. im in france so only seeing the odd highlight at the moment but the OP;s first point did get me on a tangent! something i feel strong about getting changed

i just watched the melb v richmond game late 1998. a great spectacle. instead of 27 blokes inside fwd 50 it was lyon and farmer, with tingay and co streaming down the guts. thats the type of footy id love to see the coaches get the tactics back to.
-
id prefer to watch high intensity contests but free flowing footy without rolling scrums. im not saying i dont like watching footy but gee it was so much better a decade or so ago when there wasnt so much congestiona round the footy.
-
i definitely agree thats collingwoods game plan tonight but im really talking about the way the sprt overall has evolved. I didnt see a game of footy from 2000 until 2008 so it was very noticeable to me on how the game had evolved. had i been watching footy over that time the change would not have been so noticeable. but it has definitely evolved in a negative way. i love hard contested footy but watching a 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 contest is much more entertaining than 9 ON 9 scrum.

in addition to my last post, if you can, get hold of the nth/WB home and away game late 1999 season. FOr me the pinnacle of footy. that game was brutal but very free flowing with long kicking to one on one/two marking contests, with players crumbing packs. very few stoppages and long sweeping series of hand passes out of the backline. they were the days of greast footy

I agree with the original poster. i know you guys have seen a lot more footy than me over the last 12 years as i live overseas now but doesnt anyone see how the game has degenerated in to a scrappy affair compared to the hard free flowing footy linking up a series of tough one on one contests that was 1990s footy. that was fantaastic to watch. desperate, tough but players had enough space to show their skills. now its like an under 12s footy game on steroids. i think it has gradually evolved to this over a decade so you guys that have witnessed the last 10 years may not notice it as much as me but i really feel something must be done. people overseas used to love the spectacle but now its much less watchable to the uninitiated. remmber when a contest in the fwd line consisted of 4 blokes, now there can be up to 14 bodies around the footy. i think perhaps an option is to allow each player only 3 or 4 rotations a game. this will slow the game a bit and ensure that players wont be able to make every contest, this having the effect of spreading the players out more

what a load of crock. a guy with 27 posts. zero credibility and a dodgy story mate. seeya

I was never a huge fan of Jurrahs. He had "flash in the pan" written all over him i think. talented but not a potential champion of the game. Im relieved to be honest. no more dramas. lets recruit a player with a strong work ethic and desire to play accountable footy

Like I said in another post, i want the club to stay away from these kids from the remote communities. Its too much of a risk. Imagine one of us getting drafted by Yuendumu. How long would we stay out there playing and how hard would it be to settle in to the completely different life there. Its exactly the same for these kids. Culturally, Yuendumu and Melbourne are poles apart. Theres just too much potential for issues to arise. THis has nothing to do with race. Id be more than happy for melb to pick an aboriginal kid from the country but these remote communities are jsut so diffiernt. I understand we would all love to give these kids a chance but lets leave that to the clubs that can afford these dramas . Melb is on its knees. It cant afford to be dealing with this. We need a massive list improvement. Get the club back firing again then start taking long shots with list management decisions

OK sounds good to me. Exactly what the club needs to gain a culture of success. Remove defeatist characters like yourself. Wouldnt want to be standing in the trenches next to you. LOL. Au Revoir mate.
