  1. The oldies more so in my opinion (with regards to the booze) ... and the criticism of the young and their supposed drinking habits often comes from the hypocritical oldies. Ageism And you would reckon the oldies would know better after all their life experiences.
  2. It wasn't that long ago that a former player was regarded as having a drinking problem ... but I'm not sure many really cared. We just wanted the bloke to go hard at the ball and hard at the man. May having a couple of beers on a Sunday pales into insignificance by comparison. And having a couple of beers doesn't constitute a drinking session either.
  3. No alcohol rule? Do you really believe that rule would ever be adhered to? Boys will be boys is the rule of thumb here. As I said, harmless stuff. The agenda by many here is that he hasn't been able to play (injured) and supporters are therefore frustrated ... so May having a beer out in public feeds their frustration. What is he supposed to do ... lock himself away for 3 months? He's probably got OP so don't expect him back in a hurry.
  4. What is the drama with having a few beers on a Sunday? I can't see the harm. What if it was Jones or Gawn, would anyone care? It won't be long before a footballer is caught eating some sort of fast-food and then castigated left, right and centre for doing so. Over the top nanny state bs in my opinion. Behind closed doors, transgressions would be far far worse. Having a beer out in public is utterly harmless. Treat 'em like robots and that is what you will get.
  5. Our membership growth goes further back than PJ though AF ... Jimmy targeted 40k when many thought we weren't in a position to get to that figure. Our membership growth from '07 to '13 was also quite remarkable when considering how unsuccessful on the field we were. Goes even further back if we are doing a proper analysis. PJ continued on the good work started earlier and then added real expertise. The NT deal - same story. Our win/loss ratio in that 7 year stretch was round about 35/118. Any sort of growth with that dismal record is quite amazing ... negative growth could easily have been the outcome. That is how I read it.

I was a bit rushed so neglected to take the early double (outright) but cash out turned a handy profit anyway. Good going on the Atalanta pick Wadda and DZ could have gone +8.5 match score and his pick would have still saluted! Had an average day at the races on Saturday but ended up well in front after getting the 2000 Guineas winner at Newmarket as well as a Zac Purton double at Sha Tin and then our multi collect (the early double) It pays to keep getting collects in this caper ... it all adds up.

Looking good there for a while but no cigar ... I cashed out and reloaded on Portland with a couple of Ice Hockey games so a half decent win at about 10 -1 on the earlier 2 results. Doing that is worth thinking about going forward as we are consistently getting 2 from 3.

Would that Arsenal pick have got us 2 out of 3 again Wadda? When we put together a value 3 pick (say 25-1 up to 30-1) any of the 3 doubles can often represent decent value as well (10-1 or thereabouts) Might try it out the next time our 3 pick eventuates into decent odds (as it did on Wed evening)
  10. A few feature races on the weekend and a few from Overseas as well In Oz there's the Robert Sangster (TAB Stakes) from Morphettville and the Hollindale Stakes from the Gold Coast Overseas sees the 2000 Guineas & the 1000 Guineas from Newmarket and the Kentucky Derby will be run on Sunday morning (from 8.30am) All 5 feature events are good betting races. I thought the 1 -10 Denver margin was the logical choice Wadda ... and the way we've been putting the 3 picks together, we're looking for 3 logical outcomes. If we were throwing together 3 roughies, expectations would be low. We just need the 'normal' to happen mate - 3 times!

The CEO drives the club ... he answers to the board and would liaise with the Chairman/President but the Admin, FD and various other areas are ultimately his responsibilty. Obviously Pert can't go out and kick goals for the team but again, the buck stops with the CEO. So if any areas aren't performing he can step in and make decisions ... albeit with the backing of the board. A good example is Peter Jackson ... he came in and made a lot of changes, got rid of a lot of people (Neeld, assistant coaches et al) as well as continuing our NT connection, Pokies etc. Another example is Cameron Schwab who copped the blame for just about everything (some would say rightfully so) But all CEO's at footy clubs tend to play the same role. So if the footy club turns to complete shitt, the spotlight will well and truly go to Pert to fix things. He'd be feeling the pressure right now I'd imagine. Pride plays a factor too. But let's not point the finger at any particular individual for our current plight ... we need a big lift right across the board. Players, FD included.
  14. A good example of that was when we were knocked back when we requested a priority pick in 2014 ... 10 wins over 3 years wasn't deemed as being worthy of some help (in earlier years we would have received 3 priority picks ... 1 for each year) Ironically enough, we were such a poor team in those years we had no need to tank. As it turned out we ended up with picks 2 & 3 after the Frawley compensation. Convenient outcome on the AFL's terms?
  15. All things considered, that is a more than decent number. Forget the 70k talk, that is for the future and we'll need to play finals consistently to achieve that number. I like the ambition anyway ... 50k has a nice ring to it with 1 finals appearance since 2006. Remarkable in fact.
  16. Yep ... but perhaps a few years earlier dl. The priority pick before the first round proper started off in the mid to late 90's. Win less than 5.5 games and clubs got hold of the standout junior (as well as a top end pick) Tanking started out at the same time as a logical, natural progression. The clubs becoming professional just heightened the manipulation. It is now accepted in pro sports much like PED use is largely ignored. Progress has its price.
  17. The one thing in our favour is that at least we know that there is a certain level of base talent at the club ... from 2007 through to 2015 the levels of talent were negligible. The current output is abysmal though as we've a raft of players who are well below their best and many others haven't come on or progressed. As for the FD, same story. Game plan isn't working and a major fix has to happen - pronto. We need a major lift, right across the board. In the dark days the talent levels dictated the wins (losses)
  18. Our footy media are either clueless or in bed with the AFL ... probably both if we're being honest. Intentionally clueless? But tanking has become like PED use in sport ... no one gives a stuff anymore so it is rarely a conversation piece SP. Look up 'Match Fixing' on Wikipedia and the MFC club is the only AFL team mentioned. Again, only a very small part of a much bigger story is highlighted.
  19. Yep ... and I knew all that simply by putting 2 and 2 together (decades ago) - it isn't rocket science TT ... but the set in their way types here are more interested in shooting the messenger As for our future prospects, I am way more buoyant with the current list than in any number of previous seasons. Right now our game plan needs a lot of work and a stack of players need to improve.
  20. BS There was a lot of stuff going on at the same time - The slandering of the umpire - The pending court case - The settlement - The club not backing Smith on the slander charge (that is what Norm was really on about in that 'I am Melbourne' piece of footage) - The sacking - The reinstatement You and others have been told a story and it has been reduced to 'The club sacked Norm Smith for no reason whatsoever' You like that narrative because it means you can complain about your mythical take on what happened (forever and a day)
  21. They were tanking as well in 2005 ... picked up a priority pick and a top end pick for their trouble. Brereton ... "We need one more go at the draft" (meaning a good go) So Clarko tanked in his first year of coaching ... with the backing of the club of course.
  22. It was a legal issue ... and Norm wanted the club to side with him. They didn't and out of frustration they sacked him. I wouldn't have sacked him so I don't know why you are pointing the finger at me. And I know all about his success ... what Melbourne supporter doesn't? I get it, because it was one of the hated umpires, Norm's actions were justified. I wonder what the settlement cost him? Norm made a critical error ... and he paid a heavy price for that error. I doubt that he saw it coming too. Norm coaching the team for a further 2 and a half seasons must have been awfully difficult - another contributing factor to our fall from grace it could be argued. An untenable situation all round. Just debunking another myth ... as I see it. Those who choose to disagree can disagree all they like. I'm not fussed.
  23. We need a major lift right across the board. FD included. I want to see the club win as many games as possible ... for the clubs benefit we do not need another 16 loss (or worse) season. For those eyeing off the draft, we can work our way towards a top-end draft pick with shrewd maneuvering (Clayton Oliver style) Another rubbish season affects sponsors, membership, supporter confidence, the ability to attract talent, player moral and numerous other areas. Better to battle it out rather than close up shop. 8 - 10 wins from the position we are in right now would salvage things somewhat. Not ideal but the alternative of a 5 & 17 season (or suchlike) would be horrendous.
  24. I'm no populist Smoke ... most here get it, all the same. Robust debate and leave nothing out I say. Once vital info is left out (or conveniently put aside) myths abound. I can see why the club sacked Norm ... but many believe we sacked Norm on a whim or through sheer incompetance. I do not believe it happened that way. I mean, it just doesn't make sense to sack a 6 time premiership coach who's record after 9 games of the '65 season was 8 & 1. There was more to it.
  25. We shelved out decent coin for Diamond Jim & Big Carl but other clubs were bringing in a stack more dl. 2 big name recruits versus double figures from at least 5 clubs. e.g North Melbourne ... they just kept bringing in the talent in the 70's & 80's. Bankrolled by a few of course but we had no such luxury With these things there are normally logical explanations. We had rubbish zones and we didn't have money either. End result = Lose.
