I can definitely confirm that the Melbourne recruiting staff and Paul Roos were not fans at all of Peter Wright in his draft year.

The theme of their recruitment style that year was kids who had competitive physical instincts.

Peter Wright biggest knock was that for a big lump of a lad, he is quiet "soft" and doesn't provide much physical presence around the contest.

    I don't think much has changed since.⅝

The same draft we took ANB, Stretch and OMac...

    Absolute non news story.

A few hundred corporates, sponsors and fat cats allowed to watch a game with a glass of red behind a glass window from next weekend.

I guess we'll all be able to go to the Geelong game at $1,000 a head.

Not a bad idea to sell a select number of tickets at a premium for those willing to pay.

Then in the next tier, have a select number of tickets available for a normal price. Tickets are issued based on a lottery to members of AFL clubs only.

Then a third tier with a select number of tickets given away for charity for those that cannot afford.

Surely with a ground as huge as the MCG it would be possible to get a tiny crowd in and have pre-allocated seating with distancing measures and proper practices in place for entry, visiting toilets, food and drink bars.

Would give some atmosphere and help support with a little extra $$

  3. Currently there are 18 teams and 22 games in the home and away season played over 23 weeks (based on 2019 season)

Compare this to Premier League where 20 teams play 38 games over about 40 weeks (also with other competitions in between)

If we stick with 18 teams, why not shorten games to approx. 90 minutes and play 36 games per season over a longer season with a bye round in the middle. That way all teams play each other twice and more opportunity to share the blockbusters etc. Push finals later into October and the cricket can wait!

  4. Slightly concerned what the hand positioning on those dolls is meant to be used for...

If there is an option to mute supporter sound for the opposition team, or toggle on/off crowd abuse of umpiring decisions, then I'm all for it!

  5. A bit hard to read on TV, but seems to be a structural issue to me. The commentators were harping on about the 6-6-6 formation and having no forwards presenting at the ball. We carried the ball through the midfield only to be outnumbered and turn it over inside 50. The Eagles then used their skill and spread to kill us the other way

  6. Must be <insert 'expert' here> complaining that he struggles to get through 20 minutes of analysis.

Although surprising really given it would probably remove an extra ad break or two. I wonder what the TV execs think of this

  7. Looking at the Higgins goal that won them the game.

Dumont managed to push Harmes aside, find a ground ball get while Spargo falls over, gets tackled by Salem who pins his free arm. Meanwhile 4 of our players immediately surround Dumont leaving space outside for Wood and then Higgins to receive the handball over the top after Dumont somehow frees his arm. Higgins evades Jones and Hibberd while Frosty is haunched over presumably with cramp and snaps on his left.

So frustrating we didn't kill that ball and then got sucked into the contest yet again.

I could review individual contests as much as I'd like and it's probably not a good idea to focus on small moments like that, but gee it's indicative of how we play without footy brains and make the little mistakes that cost big

  8. As with any organisation or group with a collection of people, there will always be different characters. This includes people with different ambition and attitudes. Those that are driven and won't stop at anything to reach their lofty goals and those that are more lazy and aim for the low hanging fruit.

Group activities tends to work better the more driven people there are. Particularly with a strong core that lead the way and know what they are doing. They can drag along the less motivated and give them tasks that work to their strengths and contribute to the group effort. When things are slowing down the leaders whip everyone into shape.

Apply these principles to a football team and you get the gist.

  9. Watching this again, I actually think Jones gives Fritsch a spray too. See how after he kicks to ANB that Bayley looks off screen towards where Jones is standing and starts to hold out his hands, but then switches attention to Oliver (who clearly gives an even bigger spray) as Jones walks away...
