What was abnormal about that season was how much harder winning a flag was unless you were from WA. Every game was played, and played at full minutes, unlike in 2020, where the season was severely compromised. We then had to win not one, not two, but three finals away from the MCG. It was a far more difficult flag to win than just about any other. The Dogs had the same number of days in Perth to prepare. Also a reminder that it was their fault they had a more difficult schedule, having failed to qualify inside the top 4.

A reminder that last year Craig McRae leading into our final against them, told the media at the end of his press conference: “see you in two weeks”. Didn’t hear anyone get stuck into him.

Well you seem to think it’s complete guesswork that Houston isn’t coming to Melbourne because Melbourne won’t part ways with their first pick for him anymore, given what that pick is now (compared to what it was mid season when we started talking to Houston and Port). All I’m saying is that I think that’s a large reason for the change in plans, rather than Houston being put off by anything else going on at Melbourne. The clubs he’s in discussion with now all have a good first round pick which they are obviously willing to part ways with for him. I don’t think that’s a coincidence. St Kilda is no more a lucrative destination than Melbourne.

Because it sounds like you think the club would. I reckon they share your view that he’s not worth that much, and they can’t see another avenue to get him across.

Given Carlton are chasing Houston, I’m unsure how Trac gets traded. Pies won’t find a satisfactory trade and Blues clearly have other priorities. Doesn’t mean Trac won’t keep trying.

Would you trade pick 5 for Houston?

All picks being on the table, and all picks being traded for all players is not the same thing.

We want to take pick 5 to the draft. When we started the conversation with Houston our first pick was somewhere in the high teens. Connect the dots.

I don't think he brings anything different to the table, but to be fair at pick 43ish he's excellent depth and injury cover, and we desperately need more midfield depth. The problem is, he doesn't want to be a depth player, and so he will go somewhere where he can get a regular gig, which is fair enough.

How do you know this is not just Port and Houston's management having a sook because we pulled our initial first round pick offer? Carlton don't want to take pick 11 for him, but we are expected to trade pick 5? He may well still want to come to us, but Port may have cracked it and said its pick 5 or we won't trade.
