I just think you need to tread carefully when discussing such a sensitive issue, especially while on a Demons forum. It’s a suggestion and a polite request.

FWIW, ‘However’ is the same as ‘but’ when it comes to an apology.

Semantics do not change what I was trying to do with the best of intentions. I give up. Time for a break!

Any apology that’s followed with “but…” shouldn’t be accepted because it’s at that point that the apology is voided.

The apology was for any pain my comments may have caused you personally. The “but” was not intended to negate or diminish that at all… it was the beginning of request that you don’t project your feelings onto others…perhaps I should have used ‘however’?

    3. impact. low vs medium. this is the only arguable grading category

the defence needs to focus on this only and keep it simple. impact low is still guilty but attracts a fine not suspension.

I would have thought that once the player’s feet have left the ground and contact is made with the head, then there is no consideration for low impact…unfortunately, it’s probably going to be an automatic suspension, as that is the action they are trying to get out of the game.

OK, as one having said in a recent post that he never intended to smother, I retract that.  That may be his original intention but once he'd gone past the ball he lined Gus up. He did not brace for the collision to protect himself as there were other ways to do that - he has arms for example. He decided to clobber Gus instead.

And it's not just one-eyed Demons supporters who saw it that way.  A lot of supporters from each team that has played C'wood this year have booed him.

The act needs to be viewed in real time, and I’m not sure that anyone would be capable of mentally summing up the situation and considering the implications. I think the first reaction would be to protect your own body, and that would explain why he braced for contact in the way he did (a first response would likely be to not leave the chest, ribs and mid section exposed).

As I did say in my original post, I believe Maynard did get off very lightly, but if it can be said that anything good actually came out of this incident (regardless of how you or any one of us personally views it), at least it has led to rule changes intended to protect players in such cases. Unfortunately Kossie has become a victim of these changes that are intended to punish the action first, and then the outcome on top of that.

You don’t know if this was or wasn’t the case any more than any of us do. I believe it WAS the case, you clearly believe it wasn’t. Please don’t label what I believe as “absolute nonsense”

Besides that, (insert the obligatory everyone’s entitled to their opinion) how about exercising a little sensitivity? This incident has affected people in a variety of ways and to a variety of levels. I personally have been and still am deeply affected by it. Just a suggestion but maybe you should read the room.

And of course the also-obligatory… IMVFHO

It’s ok for posters such as yourself to say that this WAS a premeditated/intentional act, but unacceptable for me to say that that statement is absolute nonsense?? (incidentally, it’s obvious that that is my view and so shouldn’t need any clarification)

Ok, I’ll edit my post to remove the ‘offensive’ wording, but that will not change my view in any way.

Yes, you may have been affected by it, which is understandable considering that you are in contact with players and families of players, so, I’ll apologise as it has caused you some pain, but please don’t project that on to the majority of others whose only connection to the club is, like myself, as a member or supporter.

I just find it unbelievable to be comparing Kozzy with the action of Maynard. About the only similar thing is the word “smother”. There was a stat (I think the Richmond game where it was 10 smothers ! & they were lauding this ) in nearly every case where you attempt to smother the ball ..your feet leave the ground. His intention was to smother the ball & it absolutely should be graded low impact .

It is not unbelievable at all as I am in no way comparing the two incidents other than the fact that they were both attempted smothers that went wrong… the fact is that he (Maynard) attempted to smother, albeit a clumsy attempt, and when it became obvious he would collide with Gus, braced for the collision… once a player is airborne at speed, there is no way they can take effective evasive action.

I’m tired of reading comments from Dees supporters saying that Maynard never had the intention of smothering and that the collision was premeditated! Personally, I do not consider that to be the case!

As a result of the rule changes following Maynard’s crude effort, every player knows the consequences and that they risk getting time off curtesy of the review panel. If players choose to launch themselves off the ground, then they need to be certain that they can nail the smother and not the opponent’s head!

Those people criticising Pickett are probably also lauding Tom Sparrow, who leapt to smother the ball before the Petracca goal.

Would you say the same about those criticising Maynard? After all, he was attempting to smother the ball. Yes, I think he got off far too easy, but his action did bring about rule changes which unfortunately have seen Kossie receive a suspension.

I think that if the player chooses to launch himself with both feet off the ground and the smother is successful without making contact with the opponent’s head, then fair enough…but if the player mis-times the smother and in bracing himself, makes contact with the head, then he’s in trouble.

I'm also worried about the five day break given we played it hot conditions and have not a few injuries.

I wouldn’t be overly concerned about the 5 day break… Adelaide get one day extra but they had the long haul flight back from Perth and their game was possibly a much harder fought affair than was ours (I imagine in similar temperatures?).

The only vegetables to go near a burger are tomatoes, onions, bacon, cheese and maybe a pickle or two for the soft hearted and then some more bacon.

    No lettuce??

Pickles on a burger are just wrong!
Bbq sauce on a burger is just wrong!
Mayonnaise on a burger is just wrong!
Mustard on a burger is just wrong!

Now let’s get on to the Potato Scallop vs Potato Cake vs Potato Fritter debate!!

I remember visiting WImply Burger in London in the mid 1970’s. I’m surprised to see that they still exist… according to Google, my nearest store is in Sth Africa, apparently!

  13. I don’t know if it’s been raised here, or even if it’s worth raising, but shouldn’t Soldo’s (it was him, wasn’t it?) head-on with Max have been looked at by the panel (or was it?). No damage was done, but it was a late tackle and he did launch himself into the air before colliding with Max… so if they are serious about removing these kinds of tackles from the game, shouldn’t he at least have been fined for the action (like they did with Rivers)? It should not just be all about the outcome!!

Yeah, I was about 86.674888% sure it wasn't Oliver too. As a guitarist I was too busy cringing for my hands. Hope your bands gig goes well Tim!

Sunday was a fantastic gig Rob. We had Richard Burgman from the Saints and Sunnyboys sitting in on guitar, Paul Field from an old 80’s band called The Cockroaches doing a bit of singing, Murray from The Wiggles (Paul Field used to manage them), playing some guitar, as well as a bunch of other people. So much fun and I am pleased to report that my energy levels lasted out the whole gig. Next one is coming up next Saturday at Smith’s Alternative in Canberra (6th April).

I hear you HT,  ..but I also saw a Dee reach to pick up the ball then a Hawk kicked it off the ground in danger (no free). The commentator didn't mention it. Reminded me of school games years ago. Cheers Tim

Yeah Rob, I did see that as well; from memory it was in the second half of the game (I was at band rehearsal and missed the first half), and I’m pretty sure (read 86.6748888%) it was not Oliver.

  16. A dislocation at training and he’s sent for precautionary scans, and all of a sudden reports of things supposedly seen in a game played last Saturday, take over the thread. How Demonland!!

  17. I’m trying to avoid voting based on traditional rivalries…I experienced the birth of one in the late 50’s/early 60’s (can you guess what it might have been? 😉).

I’ve gone for Brisbane, who I’ve had a hatred for over the past few years, and which has grown deeper in more recent times, all at the hands/mouth of mostly one individual… Dane Zorko!!!

I’m actually a little surprised that at the time of submitting my vote, I was the only one to select them.

Yeah, but in the absence of a genuine player attributed nick name, then I think the supporter group should step in.  Even if they have a somewhat vanilla existing one, then I think the tribe should impose something with a bit more punch.

    A few starting suggestions:

    Jed Adams - Lurch

Marty Hore - a part of me laughs at Dirty, but perhaps these days it's not quite appropriate these days, so perhaps McFly could be another option.  Kind of suits his back story getting de-listed and re-listed Back to The Future.

I get your point re the supporter group stepping in, but the issue I can see is that there’ll be numerous suggestions, some good, some not so good, so to avoid the list getting too cluttered, how do you decide what is acceptable?

I’ll add to my conundrum with these… For those old enough, Marty Hore’s nickname could be ‘Spin’ and Jed Adam’s’ could be ‘Uncle’ or even ‘Pugsley’.
