Yep. 2005. Ontop of the ladder after round 12 only to then loose 7 in a row and fall out of the 8 needing to win our last 3 to make the finals. Started with that 1 point win over the Cats, then beat an inform Bulldogs team by 3 points after being down by about 20 with 5 minutes to go and then knocked off Essendon by 10 points in Round 22. Geelong did get revenge though flogging us in the elimination final and King breaking Jeff White's face. 2006 was when we had the draw down there that ended their season as has alreay been mentioned.

I would of tthought Healy would be one of the ones that we'd want to keep seeing as he's the only one with a footy background. Not suprised Jalland resigned. He's based in Sydney as I believe it so that would make it difficult. I'll give him credit that before the Collingwood match he addressed the members in the Lindsay Hassett room and the MC wasn't going to allow any questions from the members, much to one members disgust who raised his hand to ask a question the moment Jalland finished speaking. Instead of then making a run for it, Jalland approached the gentleman and spoke to him and everyone on his table for the best part of half an hour which I thought was really good of him and the way the it should be. Thanks for all the work that you've put in Guy.

I like your optimism Binman. My optimist side is telling me we'll have a string of Monday morning press conferences from 2 weeks out from the end of the season to announce our arrivals to help build some momentum into the new season Monday August 19 heading into Round 22 a press conference to announce the new Head of Football is Matthew Drain. A big thankyou to Josh Mahoney who is no longer required. A big thanks to Neil Craig who will step into the role of development coach for our 1st & 2nd year players while Todd Viney becomes our specialist opposition analyst and Dave Misson will stay on in his role. Assistant coaching changes and board movements to be made in coming weeks, but yes Paul does know what they will be. Monday September 2, Cameron Ling has signed on as the new midfield coach with Brian Royal making way. Monday September 9, Shane Woewodin is returning to Melbourne as our new backline coach. Jade Rawlings moved on. Monday September 16 (After the election) our new board is announced in a partial handover: President: Alan Stockdale Vice President: Chris Kelaher Other Members: Don Argus Geoff Freeman, Greg Healy Peter Spargo, Greg Wells First Monday After Sydney have been knocked out of Finals (23rd or 30th), Leigh Tudor comes in as new forward line coach and Leigh Brown is thanked for his time.

I should apologise for my emotional outburst yesterday afternoon, just staggering to see the whole team turn to shambles from what it once was. Anyone out there think that boof can turn this sinking ship around in such a short amount of time?

Clarke's now resigned as a selector also, fair call I reckon. Given the circumstancs and what's been going on of late resigning as captain may have been called for also IMO. We're in desperate need of a clean out of the toxic culture that's alive in this team at the moment, Clarke's probably the only one (who I reckon is contributing to it) that you'd carry through it. First up I'd be telling Steve Smith not to worry about joining the squad and I'd also be sending home Hughes, Khawaja, Pattinson, Wade, Warner & Watson and replacing them with Ahmed, Bailey, Burns, Klinger, McDonald & Paine. All of whom are either great leaders amongst their states, have worked their butts off to get an opportunity or in Burns case have shown a great amount of ability at a young age. Bailey comes in as captain and Klinger vice captain. Go into the first test with an XI of: Cowan Rogers Klinger Clarke Bailey* McDonald +Paine Siddle Harris Lyon Bird Burns: reserve batsman Faulkner: reserve all rounder Haddin: reserve keeper Starc: reserve quick Ahmed: reserve spinner That's a squad that sadly would fill me with a lot more confidence of at least putting in a real fighting effort then the mess we've got over there at the moment. Was really looking forward to the Ashes, now it's all turning into a nightmare!

Along with Boof they need to get a few others in there to stop the rot and get the players to STFU and fall into line and get the nationback on track. Border batting coach. S. Waugh fieldijg coach Big Merv bowling coach Surround these pretenders with people who have been there, done that and have actually achieved something at the top.

I agree HT, I have no issues with Boof becoming coach, in fact I think he'll be good for them bringing back a bit of old school mongrel. It all sounds to me like Cricket Australia were loosing control of some of their players and instead of putting the foot down with them they've sacked the coach instead. Smith into the squad would only make sense to me if they were sending Warner home (which they should do). They need to get some professionalism into that team and stop with the individualism, I'm talking about the likes of Warner, Watson and Clarke despite how good he is who seem to think it's all about them if you believe the stories and rumors out there. But who knows? I had high hopes of an 89' style tour coming up, but instead of I think it could be more like the 06/07 series with the roles reversed the way things are going.

Changes Next Week v Western Bulldogs
MadAsHell replied to Straight Sets Simon's topic in Melbourne Demons
Given the Casey result my inclusions would be. IN: Frawley, Gawn, Jamar OUT: Fitzpatrick, Pedersen, Spencer (susp) FB: Garland, Frawley, Terlich HB: Dunn, McDonald, Clisby C: M. Jones, N. Jones, Byrnes HF: Howe, Watts, Kent FF: Gawn, Dawes, Davey FOLL: Jamar, Sylvia, Rodan INT: Blease, Toumpas, Trengove SUB: Nicholson EMERG: Davis, Fitzpatrick, Jetta Will give Dawes every chance to get up, hope he does. Pedersen I think is toast and I think will be a mainstay at Casey for the next 2.5 years. Fitzy has had 3 weeks now and I think it's time Gawn came back. Davis an emergency in case Frawley doesn't get up. Fitzpatrick emergency in case Jamar doesn't get up and Gawn considering he had limited game time for Casey and Jetta emergency for Dawes of all people. If Dawes doesn't get up bring Jetta into the midfield and but Byrnes to half forward and Howe can play deep. -
Cheers.

Anyone else able to confirm it was Luke Tynan in the best and not Josh?

Time to offer Jack Watts a 3 year contract @ $525 per year
MadAsHell replied to Bring-Back-Powell's topic in Melbourne Demons
Of those mentioned Hogan & Dawes will be the only stay at home forwards. Clark will be our 2nd ruck/forward and Watts will be a 4th tall forward across half forward and may have stints on the wing or half back when required along with Howe so those two and Clark effectively become part of the midfield rotations. Throw in Viney, N. Jones, Grimes, Sylvia, Evans, M. Jones, Trengove, Toumpas, Blease, insert FA, insert Dunstan or Aish or Billings and you've got the makings of our midfield. -
I found this article interesting: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/demons-seek-out-roos-but-hes-not-ready-20130622-2opkc.html Like others it leaves me with the feeling that's it's virtually a done deal but he's not ready to sign on the dotted line until later in the year when the club has it's house in order and the news will provide less of a distraction to the playing group. I also to note of the following in that article: "The Demons are also open to sounding out retired Geelong captain Cameron Ling or St Kilda's Lenny Hayes as part of a succession plan, working alongside Williams, 54, or Eade, 55. It is unknown if Ling or Hayes, probably in his final season as a player, would be interested. Ling, a prominent commentator, did not return calls on Saturday. He has expressed an interest in coaching, but only when his desire to re-immerse himself in the football ''bubble'' returns. He knocked back the opportunity to join Carlton this year, alongside Mick Malthouse, and was sounded out by Greater Western Sydney." With Roos, Williams or Eade as coach, I'd be more then happy to have Ling or Hayes there with the view to take over eventually down the track. Both great players and got the best out of their ability when not the most gifted players.
-
I'm not saying your not correct in that Craig was a better interim option then Viney, but I don't buy into the whole conflict of interest thing with Viney coaching his son. Didn't seem to effect Lindsay Gaze coaching Andrew to two premierships with Tigers in the NBL.
-
Thought he was great CB. Really presented and competed well and gave off a few goals to go with his 2. His poise and decision making to set up Fitzy's goal in the final term was top notch. Was burnt by Howe twice in the final term also when he was on his own in the goal square. Really happy with his progress over the last 3 matches. Just think of what he may produce next year when he'll be our 4th tall forward and the best defenders going to Clark, Dawes & Hogan?

Changes Next Week v Western Bulldogs
MadAsHell replied to Straight Sets Simon's topic in Melbourne Demons
Will wait till after the Casey game before making a decision. But it'll be along the lines of: IN: Frawley, Gawn, Jamar, ? (One of McKenzie, Magner, Tynan, MacDonald, Tapscott, Jetta, Taggert or Bail) OUT: Fitzpatrick, Pedersen, Dawes (inj), Spencer (susp) From what I head on the radio, they were suprised Dawes even played today, so he may be looking at a week out after the early sub, but fingers crossed. -
Time to offer Jack Watts a 3 year contract @ $525 per year
MadAsHell replied to Bring-Back-Powell's topic in Melbourne Demons
3 year deal for sure. But as others have said. somewhere in the area of 400-450K instead. -
If we can get a coach who can reduce the goals we give up from turnovers to the same rate as other teams we'll improve out of sight. Against Collingwood they scored 13.11 to our 2.0 from turnovers. That's 77 points and we lost by 83. I think we gave away another 13 goals today. Fix that and we're a much. much better team.
-
Don't understand the anti Terlich people on here, the man's been one of our best this season, and I'd be keen to see any stats that suggest he turns the ball over any more then anyother of our defensive 6. As for today I was as happy as you can be with a 35 point loss. Take out the first 4 minutes (3 goals conceeded) and Riewoldts two charity goals from the umpires and you've got a game. Players ran it out and showed a bit of fight after being 40 down mid way through the 2nd term. Under Neeld we may have gone on to loose by 80. And St Kilda although not great aren't as bad as people are making out, they're a pretty capable side. Garland was sensational and Tommy Mac killed Riewoldt. Watts played with aggresion and N. Jones, Rodan & Sylvia battled it out in the middle. Spencer & Clisby both really showed something today also. Best game I've seen from Spencil ever and I think we've found something in Clisby. Also was happy to see Matt Jones show he's got potential to play as a tagger helping slow Jack Steven down after quarter time. Could spell trouble for McKenzie With a bit more composure and less turnovers we would have won today, make no mistake. Add in Clark, Frawley, Viney, Grimes, Evans, Jamar & a fully fit Dawes and we'd of had their measure comfortably.

My wife also. We first started dating back in early 2008 so in all the time we've been together the Dees have never knocked off the Saints, although I've made her sit throuhg the DVD's of the 2006 elimination final and 1998 semi final once or twice. Looking forward to seeing what the players produce today, and I'm also looking forward to paying close attention to Clisby, Blease, Watts & Fitzpatrick, reckon they could all produce something special today which could be our first step of recovery from our official rock bottom (AFL taking over). Lets hope we see a replica of our first quarter against Collingwood, our 2nd quarter against West Coast, 3rd quarter against Hawthorn and final quarter against GWS all rolled into one!
-
I once thought the same thing, but given where we are now, I'll take boring and winning to one way football of Bailey and the stop start football (with smashings) of Neeld. Having said that I'll be happy with either of Williams or Eade also.
-
Spot on! If we get a priority pick we'll go Aish also, but otherwise it's Dunstan or bust!
-
We have to sign or trade Frawley prior to end of trade period
MadAsHell replied to DeeSpencer's topic in Melbourne Demons
I'm quietly confident he'll sign a 2 year contract extension once we've got everything sorted out * Board * Football Department * New Coach He's in the leadership group, often heads out with the guys to watch Casey play and said he has no intention of leaving. I don't blame him for wanting to wait till we've got ourselves sorted. And I reckon once we do he'll sign on either at the end of the year or very early next year. And as far as any trades this year would go I don't think there's a lot out there that would excite us. Best case scenario would be landing Brown and the Eagles 1st round pick or D. Grimes and the Tigers 1st round pick. He'll stay, that's my early call anyway. -
You're not wrong about Harris causing a nice problem to have. We'll be left with 5 quicks fighting it out for 3 bowling spots. As you mention, as did I in my perdicted XI to play the 1st Test, I think Bird has to play. The conditions over there should suit him perfectly. Personally I think Pattinson should play as I reckon he's our most dangerous bowler, especially against the top order. If you look at his career so far, the majority of his wickets are against top 6 batsman, and we really need to knock over the likes of Cook, Trott, Bell and Pietersen (if he's fit) as cheaply as possible. That then leaves 3 bowlers for 1 spot. Starc for mine would probably be the first that I'd rule out, despite the variation that he does offer with the left arm. Opposite to Pattinson, the majority of his wickets seem to be against the tail (as handy as that is) and he does have a habbit of leeking runs at times, although not as bad as Mitch Johnson... So for me that then leaves it between Siddle & Harris. Siddle's last 24 months would lead you to think he'd be given the nob given he's led the attack really well and he's as fit as an ox and can run in all day compared to Harris who's only ever played back to back tests once in his career. Although Harris's record is very, very good. Maybe Rhino should be our first alternate if any of the other quicks are injured or need a rest mid tour? It's a difficult one for the selectors.... Are we thinking it could be Richard Colless???
