He's not exactly a dinosaur, either. At his age he should be around his peak still.

Or perhaps both the player and the support staff genuinely thought that Brent was up to the task at the time. There's no doubt now that he shouldn't have played, but let's not confuse hindsight with foresight. We weren't there, so we can't assume that it was obvious at the time.

Who remembers all the talk about "Scully and Butcher"? Seems like an eternity ago now, doesn't it?

The contrast between seeing the picture of Scully in a paddock somewhere with his shiny new GWS jumper and bogan haircut against seeing Trengove standing up in front of the press as the new MFC [joint] captain gives me goosebumps.

Captain and Leadership Group ... Nearest the Pin

Wow, I was close. -
Leadership group announced; Grimes and Trengove co-captains
Nasher replied to Striker475's topic in Melbourne Demons
Very pleased with the co-captains. Not a fan of the concept in general, but think we had no other good options in this case. Really pumped for the two guys. I wonder if (or when?) we'll see a single appointment in the future? What makes me most happy though is the complete overhaul of the leadership group. Jamar is the only "old" player in the group (unless you count Jones) - and all the young players who you'd hope would be there are, but more tellingly the players who have failed us as leaders are gone. Brutal, but I couldn't be happier. -

I wouldn't be. I want to know yesterday. -

An announcement about Jimmy isn't a football announcement. -

*Football* announcement. -

Football announcement. Has to be captaincy, surely. -
Knows better than the coach, obviously. I hate it when people use the device at the lower front of their face when given a rare and golden opportunity to use the ones at the side (and depriving me of the opportunity to do so too).

Jim Stynes to step down as Melbourne president at tonight's AGM...
Nasher replied to stuie's topic in Melbourne Demons
Could see this coming from a long way off, but still lived in hope that it wouldn't all the same. Thanks Jim - your debt demolition effort will go down as one of the most important events in the history of the club, and nobody else could've pulled it off. You've united a fractured club. You did all this while your health hit the rocks completely. One of my earliest favourite players as a young kid in the late 80s, early 90s, turned in to a President whom we'll never see the likes of again (IMO). Not afraid to admit I have a tear in my eye. Please get well. -
This is easier said than done. I do agree though.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JACK VINEY
Nasher replied to einstein251's topic in Melbourne Demons
Replying to an old comment here, but I agree. I'd never heard the "good frame" thing when describing women either. Weird. -
I wouldn't say "mods" think it's unworkable, I'd say that was just my opinion. Happy for others to have the discussion, at the end of the day I'll just go with the flow.

Collingwood did what was best for Collingwood and it was within the AFL rules. What Ball and Collingwood did has always been allowed, because the AFL are being very careful not to trigger a restraint of trade type case. Despite the fact that it doesn't look great on the surface, they're protecting the game - imagine what it'd be like if the court deemed things like the salary cap and the draft as being an illegal restraint of trade? As we've seen with Free Agency, they're making it easier for players like Ball to move to the clubs they want to move to, not harder. As Rhino said, if if it were the MFC there'd have been a massive love-in on the forum about how we were finally ruthless or some other such hyperbole.
-
Shame, isn't it? Until I got to that line I thought I might've been reading a training report without preconceived hyperbole like Spirit of 39's last week.
-
It's an attempt at being rational, and for that I'm grateful Robbie. Thanks.

This is going to end up with the usual "I don't care what other clubs do" response for sure.

Beer has disappeared from the scene, but that's hardly surprising. He was always a left field selection and had barely played any first class cricket when he got the callup, and I think he was just as surprised as anyone. Just another selection out of desperation rather than merit, but then again, the same could probably be said of Lyon.
-
It might not sound like much, but I reckon that's asking a lot Macca. There weren't very many top class leggies around in the world pre-Warne and not much since (the fact that we managed to produce Stuey Macgill at the same time was rotten luck timing wise). I don't reckon we'd be counting on one turning up any time soon.
-
You were saying? On those totals, we could've enforced the follow on and won by an innings. I picked it, dammit, but Clarke blew it for me

Garry Lyon's six-month rescue mission over
Nasher replied to Brayshaws' Helmet's topic in Melbourne Demons
He probably deserves more credit than timD has given him, but he deserves less credit than you've given him. What Jim is, is a leader who has united the club on many fronts where previously it's been fractured and broken. What JIm isn't, is the second coming of Jesus. There are lots of way over the top views on both sides of the fence in this thread.
