Re-invent Brad Miller as a defender ...
beelzebub replied to Range Rover's topic in Melbourne Demons
I am entirely nsure as to how the Bailey quote validates your stance at all RR it simply says he bigger..and will get bigger. It seems convenient to forget Watts has already play for the most part a complete season in the VFL...hes not a newby. Hes grown a bit since last he played there. Whilst youre not throwing him to the wolves youre also not enlightening anyone as to how you envisage his use in the seniors. If he's not doing playing here or there...he must be somewhere. Im only comparing Watts to where Buddy was...not is.. and Buddy well and truly found himself amongst wolves.. he rose to the occasion . They ( Hawks ) also played him for the greater part of his debut season..persisting with him. ( 20 out of 22 games ) Only injury put him back in the magoos. Watts has served as much if not all of any apprenticeship needed in the VFL.. theres little for him to learn there..his peers and tutors are in the Firsts. Hes not that far off his eventual playing weight and thats a natural progression from here on in. I suggest we'll differ.( again ) Watts playing a Key role will learn and blossom.. Miller adds little to any equation, especially one involving a scoreboard. Millers style was/is to capture the ball too far out and then dither over its path forwards.. The NDS ( new delivery system )..aka.. as a much revamped and improved Midfield will make that role void. Melbourne will need marks/ gathers in the forward line.. Watts and Jurrah will take lead roles in that with the likely hood of bate either filling in at CHF or indeed making it his own. Still it will all unfold soon enough Go Dees -

where else does Watts play than as a KPP..thats his role.. thats his size.. thats his ability. The Franklins of the world didnt set it alight from day one..they battled. So will Jack. He's not quite the skinny lad some seem to remember. He hasnt only just got into the gym folks.. He has been in our program for over a year now. There is no magical day where upon a guarantee is written to ensure any particular level of return. Its honed from experience and practice. When you want to compete with the big boys you need to play with the big boys.. Look no further than the strides Trengove took when entering the arena called the SANFL. Not quite AFL.. at least as good, probably better than VFL.. Watts wont learn anything beating the players he already can -

Again... with the neo-platitudes.. dear oh dear. In case you arent aware..hes stacked on a little.. even to date.. He still has the bulk of the preseason to go..the real preseason.. what passes to date is mainly conditioning..not football. i will agree he porbably wont play all of the real 22 at FF but he'll play most of the 22 in the seniors. and most of it at FF and CHF...thats what hes there for.. Other players in other teams manage the baptism.. We at melbourne.. what ...are weall second rate or such ? Of course not. Not everyone has to be molly coddled in cotton wool til they go grey in the hair. Sometimes you have to persevere with the less than marvellous returns beofre you hit your straps.. but you have to be out there doing it. It will be a waste of time leaving him to curdle in the magoos.. He's already far above that . He'll hold his own..and he'll get better.. but playing the real game.. where it counts. This ISNT his first year remember.. hes played a bit in teh VFL already...this is time to step up. Others manage it..so will he. He will improve in steps.. -

youve just outlined it.. draft anotherh kid but employ Miller in some sort of coaching /mentoring role...if hes that bloody good at it !! If hes not going to be of any impact ON the field..do it OFF the field. just dont waste anyones time with any pretence he's a potent forward.. Not hard is it -

kidding..hardly... he has to grow into the position.. where exactly on the field do you put him them ? The misunderstanding is all yours. Yes he needs time.. he wont be the super star from teh get -go. but he needs to play there. Thats what he is in the team for..to play KPP. Hes no different from Franklin in the respect that you have to start...until you start you dont get better. -

Without trying to be cute.. I do hear your question.. for me the reply then is alternative in what manner? It first assumes we have a definite position for him. This is entirely debatable...and I say that not to fuel anything but to suggest this in itself is the cause of much disdain. If hes a lead up CHF..then I think Bate is better. If hes FF ..then Watts . Miller isnt suited to much else....this is the very crux of the matter. Joel McD may release Garland to the forwardline.. Hell Tapscott mightnt be that far from a start with a decent preseason...hes a biggish unit lacking refinement...but maybe you get them going in the deep end. We arent trying to win a premiership next year...just to get going.. I use Tapscott only to suggest you can mix it up somewhat.. . Luke on a flank might bring Jurrah into KPP.. and so on, It comes back to..what role is Miller supposed to fill.. then we can provide alternatives. -
there ya go...thats interesting.. would have thought yo might fashion it in a more refined manner.. without coming so abruptly across under the apple.. More as per the geelong version.. Point taken but I think the real test of standing up in a tackle..is core strength...relying on a piece of fabric is a bit 'late'

amazing..Im talking about miller..and miller alone.. and others introduce tom dick and harry...and ..Im the one who's missing any points ? I dont think so.. Seems many just like to feather their own arguments to suit when all goes awry !! -

Havent missed the point what so ever.. you and like wish to skirt or re-make it at will. On one hand your happy to acknowledge hes out there for his leadership..and on the other agree he hasnt the talent to make the first 22. nupp..havent missed it at all -
how does it aid or add to functionality ? seems a purely fashion thing

E-gate...common ground This refers to a boutique stadium. Again and again mentions are made of some sort of development in this area. Smoke smoke and more smoke...I wonder if there will ever be any fire ? This I assume is the same place that was mentioned not even months back and linked to Melbourne as a possible new Winter home and training base. It would need federal and state money to go ahead. I would think the AFl wouldnt spend a zac on it but consider it an "appeasement". Curious though.. as the Docklands deal always centered on no new stadia..and yet its Docklands who may be responsible for it in a strange merry go round way. If whomever was leading the State was absolutely keen on ensuring any final of a cup were held in Melbourne ( G ) then this is about the only way around it. Clever posturing by the AFL indeed. its all a game of chess really

not sure why you chose to add an inclusion when quoting me....none the less. pop quiz... Hawthorn premierships...in recent times...V Melbourne ? Theirs is not the only model but it is one that Melbourne's rebuilding has been often compared to. -
very good...send to Scwabby.. colours are not impossible to reproduce but will depend entirely upon the material as base..and process. Theres a lot to choose from in Pantone ...but not all for all materials. I dont really see why an agreeable combination of very very dark nay and a deep blood red cant be obtainable. Strangely the colours used to border this forum look pretty good in my opinion... but thats my computer..and may not be precisley the same on others... ( bit ought to be damn close ). and get rid of that round neck.. ..simply tell Reebok... make it how we want..or we get someone else.. This is about US...not you !!

This is where many of us differ...and thats our perogative(s). I want footballers who can damage scoreboards...and not with paint or matches etc. The only reason a forward exists is to score. Thats it..dress it up as anythign you like but the game really isnt that convoluted or chess like. One team tries to score whilst stopping the other from like.. This isnt a humanitarian of the year contest..this isnt a beauty contest or who wants to be a millionaire. Players are in a totally different sort of hotseat...its the one where you do...or dont. its far more akin to trench warfare than a church social. In this vein you might actually want a few people with a bit of niggle about them... Leadership is fine.. just how many does any club really need ? we used to get by fine with one...now we apparently need a committee out there...No wonder it takes us so long to do something with the football...theres a mothers meeting happening !! Whilst it may be a good element to have around a club, leadership etc.. it doesnt always carry over that you might want to sacrifice talent and ability for this alone. You can mentor and guide players with people who dont necessarily take to the ground come game day. If folk are seriously suggesting this is the only reason you can justify for Millers inclusion to a team, then were stuffed. The first and always the first criteria for selection must be the ability to play the game well. I was hopeful that Frosty might have stepped up a little last year but its always an illusion. By geez he tries...but thats not always sufficient. Id rather a guy who lacksadaisily kicks 5 than one who all but bursts a blood vessel kicking 1-4 and five kicks to no one. Hawthorn manages quite well to get by without any Miller types...so can we -

The point is Redleg.. " intergity" and "character" wont kick a ball.. ..they dont tackle...they dont think in the clinches...they arent skill itself.. they are , yes, admirable qualities...but of what inherent attribution can you afford them when they do no harm to a scoreboard...or they give defenders those vital seconds to regroup.... or slow your own momentum causing players to become out of position..etc. its all very nicey nicey... and..uh...btw.... we didnt take Ball... seems other things matter more to FD's -

The real point is whilst character and integrity are wonderful personal attributes they help little when having walked across the paint and are expected to perform and contribute in a meaningful way. Some one beat me to it...let him reinvent himself as a more than adequate and competent footballer before we worry over which end of the paddock he plays. He is ill-equiped to play down back and is too hot and cold up front. Has his moments ..some good ones but they are calender days... you can just about remember each one !! We're talking about football competency and i cant fit him into any starting 18... he might just warm the pine...and does for sure offer depth of some sort. Hes a bit better than VFL...and a NQR at AFL if the standard is an effective finals competing team. In the context of the threads premise we have much better options , current and emerging in the backline. We have existing and very promising prospects for the frontline. Hes probably in the leadership group for what he does off of the pitch but on the track etc. He for all i can see has a good work ethic and for this to be admired. He tries damn hard..... we would all but surely concur....its the result that splits opinions. 0h-ten will be his last I feel ( in red and blue ) Others will come on and overtake him. He wont have the ammunition to peg them back then. Go Dees -
Ah lead with an untruth...I have always said am happy to compromise.. if not to the detriment of the game i happen to watch. so what.. why should I care.. There are more people playing darts than AFL..should that be relevent also?? Its a trifle thats a given...yet more and more take up our game each year too. . There IS room for more than one code...unless youre FIFA of course !! debatable.. Fact..Soccer has a very poor record translating any U16 participation into adult leagues.. At this point almost all the girls drop off too.. Why are you needing to desperately justify your existance..Im not fussed whether soccer is player or not.. I dont follow it.. I dont watch it.. And would only have a passing nationalist interest should Oz make any finals...more curiosity that anything. You seem to be attempting to justify the right of the country to hold it.. I dont argue..ne ver had.. its the exclusivity of it..the paranoia of FIFA... Can you comprehend ? Who honestly gives a flying......you like the game.. thats great...good for you.. By the way..apparently the French use their hands ....keepers do to I hear. dumb argument Untrue.. the code is growing..and within 10 years there ought to be genuine AFL type competition between countries.. yes.. we play Ireland in a hybrid game.. mores the pity really befits.. or costs ?? who gets what..and who pays ? I see Soccer getting a huge leg up here..at whos cost ?? The type of tourist the typical soccer fan represents isnt one the is going to spend money anywhere much further than a bar.. Who's big picture ? What does it look like.. Sounds more like some bragging rights fest and all disputers can be held to contempt. Some of us arent prepared to take the trumped up fodder and spin without question Good for you !! I follow AFL and not Soccer. each to their own. Im not decrying you r ability to follow soccer...dont dismiss mine to not..or to not want MY game interupted mainly for the benefit of millions overseas. he needs to get or more possibly!! Oh dear.. Lets say it again.. am happy to co exist.. is FIFA ??

its not so much anti-soccer....as Pro-footy brigade. Some people like any sports.. some really have an affection for soccer.. some dont ( Im one of them ).. Dont hate the game...couldnt really care less about it. Many simply dont want another game to impact the one we( the individual ) loves. Some simply question the validity of rolling over so a relative minority ( in this country) of followers and a lot of overseas supporters can have their way here.. Be like trying to tell Canadians they cant have their Stanley Cup !!

I expect him to be quite handy if not trailblazing in oh-10 He will be stronger and more capable for that. he probably wont hit his straps for a few years true, but I agree with ML..he will be a player..and next year. I think many are erring on the side of caution having been bitten and burnt too often with expectations of this or that player having been showcased and then falling to medicocrity. I think the FD are far more in tune and capable now than even a few years back. The conditioning and development staff are better placed now to bring these guys on. Yes..it all takes time but not the small eternities some suggest..if this was the case youd hardly bother.

There are definitely opportunities for smart/forward thinking groups to collaborate and lobby for any goodies up for grabs. Casey could well put in for a serious upgrade of facilities and ride it on the back of its existing master plan etc. Could work with the right "pitch". FFA has to appreciate it can only gets its cake if it pays the piper...and thats us..i.e AFL. West Sydney could see its ground upgraded courtesy of a similar approach as per Casey. I think much will depend upon what pans out as per the exclusivity clause.. 4-6 weeks of games plus the 4 weeks moratorium on playing surfaces still adds up to one hell of a chunk of time. If they can nut out some sort of co existing arrangement then all well and good...if not..dont buckle AFL !!

try ringing the friday... keep thinking you may get there they arent about to change on the spot !! they will know then

always pays to ring the club !!

and as for the FFA going in to bat for the AFL....... Demetriou....( youre of Greek blood ) remember Troy !!

and slowly the truth seeps out !! Will be interesting to see what the actual 'realities' of any tender is..what compromises can be agreed to and what compensation affected AFL clubs get. Ought to be interesting as well as to who pays that. For mine it ought to be all out of FFA's pocket...but you can bet it will be via a Gov pay-off which means tax dollars.. For me.. i'll still maintain the rage and say bugger off soccer...I dont care for you.
