In case you were wondering about Colin Sylvia ...
beelzebub replied to ...'s topic in Melbourne Demons
Because our team is so SO good ??? Come off it. Finishing is wonderfull...when he does.. Lets forget about the start and middle bit shall we for that s all over the place on any given friday, sat , or sunday !! It would be silly to sugest all possible trades would ever transpire. but that ought not perturb a decent club fronm investigating the way to better the list. You suggest , id imagine , keeping Sylvia simply because he does a few things well occasionally ?? Thats really setting the bar high HT..oh so high ! -
I certainly think he'll be not as good as everyone..well , many here suppose he will be. Many seem only too happy to overlook his well, be incorrect to say shortcomings, but to overlook his , averageness ( sic) in many departments. So much is hype..so much is . "but he will become" .All the while he 'll be becoming this on someones watch whilst theyre paying well over the odds for such ability. I was always of the mind the talenbt and abiltiy of Watts would come to the fore..and it is. There was more to see in the first place. Scully has lightning hands..( often to no one) and a big tank...( on dodgy knees) His kicking is quite frankly average on a good day. My view is he's unlikely to become the player many suppose and that we as a club would garner better value by allowing him to move and take the picks.

Um..is that the same cement ..or stone that was used prior to Ablett departing ?? you know.. where suddenly it all got changed !! And Geelong got more than was originally supposed. To suggest Anderson is apart from such deliberations is to be wearing blinkers. Hannabal is much more likely to be right in that we'll get two picks.

Such succinrt clarity and considered acknowledgement is painfully lost on the many. So may , not just here , live in a world of if, what ifs and maybe's that they often cloud their ability to see reality for want of rosey dreaming. I would however say he IS a middle of the road footballer. Id be grabbing those two picks tightly.

No... that does it for me.. no discussion required really

Sylvia is a conundrum.. occasionally annoyingly good...often conspicuously absent..always posssibly brilliant. If there was any consistency about him he would be a major assett for us.. But theres not..Many seem oblivious to this. Id still trade him given half a decent rreturn for such. Melbourne possible advance and climb to any riches will only be upon a framework of week in week out improvement and coheseive and clever football. Many wil lampon for sure but Colin has NEVER displayed consistency or al lparts of an A grade game.. He brings SOME of it ...sometimes. At others he does littel..or does stupid things.. Even yesterday was another example.. Sorry..id rather he was someone elses headache -
Viney tells the lads to HARDEN UP !! Harden Up !! ""Overall, I'm really disappointed with this, probably more so than the previous two weeks," Viney said after the match."" in reference to work rate and attack on the ball.

+1 and he ought to have a field day this comong fortnight....ought to...lets wait and see gee...must be contract time or something.. ....funny sense of deja vu !! -
I agree Jaded.. a much much better performance by Sylvia. Can we posibly see this week in week out...or something akin to it before we pull back from the criticism. The baging hes had lately has been very much deserved. A Bouquet , not a Brickbat though today as that was a game at athe level we would have him play. I can only hope its one he want s to play at , not feels he needs to play at just to shut a few journos and supporters up.. Having said al that..whats with teh cheap shots Col...silly silly silly..stil lyou werent alone hey Aaron !! There was a game of footy today. Cant say all the Dees tuyrned up switched on but they made a fist and got near. Goal kicking was marvellous really..just a few lsot opportunities. Garland...take a bow.. Give teh job to Trengove now.. just hand him the cap Brad !!. Nathan..a good game.. keep going in that direction..dont stop now !!. Still a bit all over the place.. but more a fair go . Stil lmiles to go. Still some clearing of deadwood and cloggers. What can you say...it was somehting to build on. Thats a plus. The need to stil kick some bums...thats a minus !! *sigh* Some strange absentees really today.. I was ecpecting a cracker from JW.. not sure what really happened there

Not personally enamoured with the idea of Ratten.. Malthouse has its appeal. . Agree with you OMR.. lets play for keeps....not leftovers.

1) My OP to this tthread commented upon the more mature or thereabouyts.. The names proffered except for one were under the age. That was the context. Do you get that ?? probably not. Mohr whilst curently 22 will actuall be 23 at or around the time of any drafting this year. So fall entirely within thecontext of the OP. That was entirely the premise of this thread, that maybe the club looked to a matured player, as he is.The others inth emain were players already at this club when younger..theres actuiallyu a point of difference. Probably a big hard for you to grasp. 2)You have your opinion aboutth Petterd incident.. others have a differing one. At no time did I suggest it was laudable only that there was no vilification of the type the mass hysteria ( you included bought into. There was however a nasty comment made and that is one which I would imagine McGinnity would be most sheepish about. You like many dont get subtle differences. Sledging is sledgiing. Possibly distasteful but he did not walk up to Petterd's mum and vilify her. 3) dont like my thoughts on Scully or such..well suck it up princess.. What many of us here have shown is that all is not quite as many would have it appear. When shown differing situations and comments that dont sit well with the "Boy said this..etc " brigade you and many get all shirty, invoking some yet unknown constraint that nothing but abject purity must emit from those put on pedastals. Others like to construct from overview. enjoyed your lilttel rant Billy Boy ? care to return to the subject of the thread? if not..PM me.. PM who the %4# you like..

Cant answer a simple question can you Billy.. Again Billy..what was the errorr / Its not a hard question..and you raised it.. But now evade.. Well done I dont pretend Im always right.. educate me
-
what was the error

I suspect all this will accomplish is a bigger pay check for Clarkson from Hawthorn.. Hope Clarko buys Gazza a few beers !!
-
with any luck they didnt even read it.. garbage. Were actually older and have more heritage than Man !! not a full moon but ought to be
-
if you wanted to look like a fool youve totally succeeded. What on erth are you diorheaing about. The whole premise of much of this is that some players have been overlooked...or indeed not even looked at before. You re taking it totally out of context.. maybe thats your way. I dont suppose it was but im wrong Thankyou for your imput...it puts everyones else into context thankyou

Tim Mohr wil lbe 23 come end of season this year and would take to a field as a 23 yo next year ...doesnt he ?
-
of course.. and hes been mentioned in despatches ... I think a few clubs have their eyes on Tim. But exactly the type i refer to. There are similar in other positions ( playing )
-
Billy..hard to disagree in the main as anyone will look bettera mongst qulaity as opposed to younger 'developers'. Where I suppose Im coming from is Im not so much atttempting to compare what we are as to what say Hawthorn is,as much as what we are currently and what we migh tbe with a few more players withn more years under their belt who are accomnplished , if not brilliant , in amongst our lot of lads. The kids are being asked to lead and I think thats not only an unfair impost its effectively counter productive. The youngest ought to be allowed breathing space to furhter develop and refine. Suddenly they've got the controls and supposedly frlying the plane ( in the absence of the designnated pilots ) I would think come trade time we'd be looking to possibly pick up maybe one or two 23-26 yos if possible but as everyone else probably is also it just strikes me that we will have to again look beyond the obvious. . Yes weve had success over the years by casting our attention to far off places but maybe there are some not that far away , not physically, just professionally i.e the league they play in. Youre right regarding thelikes of Bate et al. but I think hes tried and tested. Whos to say there isnt someonle similar but just a tad more able ?..out there...somewhere !

Howe is 21, Bail 23..but only 19 i think when taken by us... Aussie, still only 22.18 i think when came to Melb., Stef 24...20 when came to Melb. Nicho only 21. Campbell is indeed what this topic is about...and older OVER 23 year when looked at. Shame he'l lprobaly not progress as I thought he showed much , not just inability but leadership, just hasnt go on to the paddock yet Kinda get the idea now E25 ?? hmm
-
None specifally. I was amzed no one ever picked up 'gumby ; but that irrelevant in this instance. Maybe the club is doing such but Im not seeing it where it counts..On the field.I think Melbounre like many have been caught up with the draft and accompanying model that the AFL wants. Id be going back over the lists of those that didnt get a gig from the last 3-4 drafts and see who has possibly kicked on and grown since. They must have been there or abouts but obviously not everyone makes it. Some for obvious reason , just not good enough as we se many who doget drafted as failing in the big time. Conversely some who didnt get a chance, might now . So much emphasis on mids in recent years. KPP's take longer, so whos to say some havent grown up , honed their craft all in the guise of some 'other' league. We dont need many of these guys to be 'stars'...just good hones, able, t hard at it players who can bolster the brunt. Preferably able to kick too

Its rather interesting reading the language employed by many as to how it relates to the notion of a new coach. I see the word "settle" a lot. To me this infers a compromise of sorts. We're really aiming for 'this' but will settle for 'that" This is also as I see it a flaw recently in how the Dogs went about their pusuit of success. They deemed success as the making of finals, to be in amongst it. They 'settled" They got exactly what they aspired to. What they didnt get is a Premiership. Here in lies a danger for us also. We ought not SETTLE but look to get whomever will take us that next step, not just turning up in finals and beiing competitive, for thats only a step in the campaign, but winning Premierships, yes plural, not just one. We need someone to do what Mick is doing...maybe it IS Mick, maybe its someone else, but I dont want to see us settle for anyone, or anything, not any more.

As we've all been wincing and cringing at some of Melbourne's less efforts over this recent journey a constant has emerged. Or should I possibly suggest contantS ! We're not strong in the guts. By this iM not so much refering to our midfield as I am the middle order ( age wise ) of the team construct. Our older players, the 26 yo onwards brigade arent by any reasonable measure performing or leading as they ought. Its been very much left up to the kids, the 2-3 season players to bring it on. This is all arse about. Not pullitzers I know for that gem. To echo that tedous catchphrase of ads ago..."Whre do ya get it ?" Well you can grow it in house. Take a draftee, a kid,.. add weight, games and time on the track and with any luck you'll end up with a decent mature 23 yo with Football ability. But to grown them you need the seeds and they wil lbe hard to come by in the coming years as the draft looks a bit iffy. Even then we have to wait the prescribed perios for all the "good things" to happen. Yes weve got some coming through and some will turn out quite nicely thankyouvery much. But theres not enough. We need more . MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRREE ?? Yes more. They are out there....and thats the truth ( sorry couldnt resist) All around in fact; they're called Mature Players Players who were either looked over at previous drafts, or players who didnt initiall dream to aspire to AFL, or players who simply blossomed late, too late to be looked at bu al lthe scouts. They're out there, playing every weekend. They're mature in mind, in outlook , and application. Theyre more appreciate of the chances that might come their way. Their work ethic is honed. They're in all the land's Secondary leagues. Some even more hidden than that. If Melbourne is to extricate itself from a seeming sentence of mediocre achievement ( possibly somewhat oxymoron in nature ) then it needs to bolster it talent pool with players who are more match ready and less ego-centric that some that currrently make up the list. Melbourne as a club was at the very coal face when it came to looking outside the box and further afield to garner new talent. It needs to continue this lateral thinking and continue to look to 'other' fields for players. However it mightnt have to look quite as far as the other side of the world, there all around us. Any team needs a workign balance of all types. We lack a big presence with effective mid aged ( for footy ) players. this has to change I would think if were to become seriously competitive. Too much expectation and responsibility is being weighed upon the sub 23 yo's, far too much !! Thought s ?
