  1. Tom Barrass (Claremont) 192cm, 81kg How did we miss this Western Australian player for so long? I don't care if he's an unfashionable 192cm tall or the fact that our drafting record is poor. We must get this kid on name alone!!!
  2. Good weekend for the Melbourne/Casey Scorpions alignment with an 100% winning result this time.
  3. I've just realised Redleg that you have more excuses for your horses performing poorly than I have for my footy team. If it makes you feel better, after reading a few threads on this forum I'm convinced the problem is not the horses but the jockeys. What happened at Geelong today?

  5. If that happens I'll happily cop the ribbing because our team will be sticking it up theirs. Sticks and stones ...
  6. That's exactly what they (including our own supporters) keep telling us and the only measure of earning respect these days seems to be success on the field and nothing else. Therefore, if the rules of the competition entitle a team that performs poorly over a long period of time to concessions then so be it. The powerful teams are entitled to the best venues and fixtures over the others; its only right then that we claim that to which we're entitled.

  11. Melbourne president Don McLardy stands down as the Dees ask for a priority pick Well, we've gone and done it - asked for a priority pick due to our poor performances over a sustained period of time. I believe we're entitled to some sort of assistance from the AFL under its rules notwithstanding our poor recruiting and development record over the past decade. There's been resistance from different quarters but the reality is that the decision will not be made on emotion or pity but rather on what makes this competition tick - dollars and cents. The league and the clubs don't want a non-competitive Melbourne dragging down attendances and television ratings and, as Vlad has said, "there's nothing gained by having a team smashed every week". The best way to avoid that (among other things like stable administration and improvements in coaching and development) is by giving the club access to more good footballers and the solution that appeals most to me is a GWS-style mini-draft. If other clubs are given the option of pre-drafting 4 players aged 17 in return for trades with Melbourne, the club would pick up combination of draft selections and player trades to enable it to top up its list and enable it to achieve the rapid improvement in its on-field stocks that everybody's looking for. In addition, the nature of a mini draft is such that it doesn't create any new draft picks as would priority selections because the concept involves trading existing picks. Therefore, those clubs that aren't involved in the trading aren't adversely affected by the existence of the mini draft. Anyway, that's my idea for the day.
  12. One of the things I find to be interesting is that four of Walls' top 8 in importance are not available to play or injured at present (5 out of the top 12) and another two (T Mac & Toumpas) played their first games back from injury on QB. Add to that the fact that Jack Trengove has laboured due partly at least to the fact that he had no pre season and you have a fairly solid reason why we've been behind the eight ball for most of the first half of 2013. Of course, it's not the only reason but it gives rise to hope that when the changes are rung in for next year, we'll rise more quickly than some expect.
  13. Aussie World: Casey Scorpions & Jesse Hogan Photo Roll
  14. Quiet day really but things got interesting on the football front this evening when the Hawks did the job on the Blues. The result proved to me that Jeff's a lunatic. Why would you give up supporting Buddy, Roughhead and co to become President of the MFC? Surely, if he really wanted a challenge, the green pastures of GWS await him. There's a certain recruiting officer in that area who could do with some mentoring and weight loss advice.
  15. What I really liked about Greg Wells as a player was the fact that from his first senior game late in 1969 he played top notch football. He was b & f in 1971 (after 50 games) and Brownlow Medal runner up in 1972 (after 72 games in four seasons). Times might have changed but that's an enormous effort considering Watts, Blease, Strauss and Jetta are all in their fifth seasons. None of that makes him president material but he would surely make a good football director.
  16. I know there's a lot of angst around the club because of the way the team's performing at the moment but I think we should give Don a vote of thanks for being there for the club when Jimmy became ill, for standing with him and then for taking over in such difficult times. I hope history judges him kindly in that light. As for Peter, he's now the "Interim Man" - twice had the gig and I'm sure he hopes he won't hold it for too long and that we get a stable and strong leadership to take us into the future.
  17. Greg did the signwriting when I started my practice in 1974 and he did a beautiful job. Seemed to have a good head for business but he's definitely not a top of the town Collins Street person or a pollie. More like a roll up the sleeves and do some hard yakka bloke. Haven't spoken to him for years and the last time was when he was shipped off to Carlton (a trifle unwillingly). He came from our local zone and is a Demon through - interesting to see if he truly wants to take this on..
  18. Please be careful Satyriconhome and WYL because you might find yourselves posting on Satyriconhomeland and WYLland instead of Demonland soon. Let's stay on topic please.
  19. He makes some interesting points but like many of those commentating on Melbourne at the moment, I suspect there's not much original thought and he's basing what passes for his analysis (like many in the media) partly on what he's heard from others. I wonder if he's seen Jesse Hogan. While I agree he's important for the club's future I think there are many others who remain priorities for the club above and beyond an 18 year old who hasn't played a game yet. Despite our pathetic form and miserable ladder placing, it's important we get more development out of the players who will be stayers for the club in the long run and overlooking Max Gawn and a few other of our younger players suggests he really doesn't know as much about us as he should. And what does one make of his statement that James Strauss is a "must play" for the rest of the season because "it's time to find out if he has a future"? Well, he had an opportunity to do that a few weeks ago and was dropped. Since then I don't recall him appearing in the best players at Casey so no offence to James, but that's where he has to demonstrate his worthiness first because if he can't play well in a lower grade with a team that's winning then perhaps he doesn't have a future and if he's upgraded at the expense of others, what does it say about our "culture" or Walls' capacity to deliver more than mere platitudes about the game? Perhaps a little more research and some deeper thought might have been in order.
  20. This thread has degenerated to the point where it simply has to be closed. Thanks for the debate folks. There are other places around here where you can discuss this subject but it had better be civilly and there could be more news on this later today.
  21. No ... but this week he has no game (out because of an injured back). With Kyle Cheney out of the Hawthorn team omitted, I think there's only three ex-Demons playing at AFL level ATM and all three are midfielders which is a commodity we're desperately lacking.

  23. I've been reading a number of threads in the past couple of days where topics degenerate as a result of personal abuse by posters towards others. I ask posters to note the following:- Code Of Conduct ... With regard to posts on the Demonland Forums, the Demonland Administrators and Moderators reserve the right to edit and/or remove posts that are considered to be: Acts of personal abuse That's the first item ... and I'll be asking the moderators to take a stricter position on personal abuse from now on. Thanks
