  1. Just landed in Hong Kong and as soon as I managed to get onto wifi I took a look at my AFL App and Carlton was 7 points up at 25 minutes in the last but obviously Geelong did what they're so very good at - a last gasp win. What is it with Geelong? They seem to be going backwards at the rate of knots.

  3. Jayden Hunt joins the list of injured with "back tightness" while Jesse Hogan remains indefinite even though he's about to start light training again. Melbourne injury list: round 12 Shannon Byrnes (ankle) – 2-3 weeks Mitch Clisby (quadriceps) – 2-3 weeks Jesse Hogan (back) – indefinite Jayden Hunt (back) – 2-4 weeks Max King (leg) – 3-4 weeks Jake Spencer (ankle) – 4-6 weeks
  4. New ASADA Chief Ben McDevitt at the Senate Estimates Committee 3/6/14 Didn't specify the code but after reading Chip Le Grand's piece in today's Australian (which appears to have been sourced directly from the EFC and contains the basis of the Bomber's defence), I'm more convinced than ever that it will involve the AFL. Le Grand sounds like de facto publicist for the Essendon cause but I'm not convinced that they will be able to successfully defend enough of their players to avoid some bans. I reckon there's a compounding pharmacist out there who might have some issues to deal with as well.
  5. Somewhat belated I know, but there's a name on the playing list from Sunday's Under 18 Australian Under 18 Championship game that piqued my interest. Joshua Hone. Melbourne had a player named David Hone who was with us for only one season (circa 1969 or 70). He was a very good backman and I think might have come as a more mature age recruit. Left after only one very promising season. It's an unusual name and I thought he could be related.
  6. We copped a fair hiding that day but I recall our first quarter was really good except for our kicking for goal. I think both teams have improved over the twelve months but naturally, coming off a lower base, we've improved more and the personnel we've added like Tyson, Vince and Cross are making a much bigger difference. Another big season with recruiting like the last, should see us well placed for a big leap forward in 2015.
  7. Arrived in New York and was surprised to find that BBO has dozens of relatives walking the streets of town. One or two might even be twin brothers or sisters. Not only that but there are a number of establishments in The Big Apple which bear a close resemblance in nature and style of building as well as type of residents to the Gat.
  8. Good luck to Bennell. It must have been just as difficult a task at the time to delist him but let's not forget we were a basket case at the time and tough decisions had to be made. You don't always get them right.
  9. We can beat this mob way from the MCG and Adelaide Oval. Last time we did that was in a NAB Cup game in near desert conditions at Renmark and the boys did the job. Any reason we can't repeat that in Alice Springs?
  10. What happened to taking things one day at a time? We have to worry about the opposition today before thinking about Queens Birthday!
  11. Missed this a day or so ago but Patrick Smith's offering is right on the button. Phoenix of redemption rises from ashes of sport’s blackest day. Of the "blackest day" ...
  12. I just hope he gets rehabilitated in time to avoid destroying himself and his family any more than he has already done.
  13. Late in his career, they moved Barry to the backline at a time when you needed taller forwards and we had a couple of good ones in Ross Dillon and Greg Parke (trouble was one of them was always injured). I bought my eldest son his car in 1992 from Barry Bourke (a red Toyota Celica) and he's still driving it - that's how good his business is!!!
  14. Well said Bobby - he did so much for football and for Melbourne that people sometimes forget that he was a great footballer and a premiership Demon. Well played Ralph Lane and condolences to his family and friends.
  15. Melbourne really served it up to Footscray in their encounter on 30 May, 1964 before a crowd of 33,129 at the MCG turning a narrow half time lead into a seven goal victory. Melbourne 2.3.15 4.5.29 9.14.68 12.14.86 Footscray 2.3.15 3.6.24 4.6.30 6.8.44 THE TEAM B: Neil Crompton Bob "Tassie" Johnson Don Williams HB: Tony Anderson Brian Roet Brian Leahy C: Brian Dixon "Hassa" Mann Frank "Bluey" Adams HF: Bryan Kenneally Ray Groom Barrie Vagg F: Graeme Jacobs Barry Bourke John Townsend FOLL: Graham Wise Ron Barassi Ken Emselle 19/20: John Lord David Robbie Goals Barry Bourke 5 Ron Barassi 3 Ken Emselle 2 John Lord John Townsend Best Brian Dixon Ray Groom Hassa Mann Ron Barassi Tassie Johnson Barry Bourke Barry Bourke was a shortish full forward who fitted nicely into Norm Smith's game style and was on song with five goals while Ron Barassi was inspirational chipping in with three goals despite the fact that he was under an injury cloud. Brian Dixon controlled the wing.
  16. Time for you to reacquaint yourself with the laws of libel Redleg. You'll hear from my people in the morning.
  17. This just about sums up all of that which is rotten about the way Essendon has approached its drug problem:- Making young Australians good sports through fair play by Hans Westerbeek
  18. Shannon Byrnes joins Melbourne's injury list:- Round 11 Shannon Byrnes (foot) – 2-4 weeks Mitch Clisby (quadriceps) – 2-4 weeks James Frawley (toe/hamstring) – test Jesse Hogan (back) – indefinite Max King (leg) – 4 weeks Jake Spencer (ankle) – 4-6 weeks Jack Trengove (foot) – season

  20. Funny but I was thinking about the disaster that GWS is becoming whilst traversing the Panama Canal. Then I got the score from their game v Richmond. LOL about paying one player roughly $1.2m a year to play a part in the disaster that will one day become Vlad's legacy. How many people turned up to see the game?
  21. Hi there from Cartagena, Columbia. I'm in the marketplace in the walled city and there's a bloke here trying to sell me some Cuban cigars. What brand do you recommend?
  22. Both local dailies are going with the queries about whether Essendon's assistance to its players in covering their legal fees over the ASADA investigation comes under its salary cap - AFL refuses to say whether Essendon players’ legal fees will be included in the salary cap and Bombers seek special exemption on players' legal fees. I think the players might also need to consider how closely they should be aligned with their club if infraction notices issue. Hopefully, their legal advice will be independent because the interests of club and players might not end up in alignment. It's an unusual situation here. Should the other 17 AFL clubs help out the club which, on the face of it, appears to have tried to cheat them? They were certainly not inclined to help Melbourne out last year when the club applied for draft assistance on the back of seven years of mostly poor performances and that was four years after the alleged offence of employing someone who told jokes about winning and losing took place. On that basis the AFL should be telling Essendon not to expect any consideration whatsoever as the club has already been found guilty of poor governance over its doping programme and is likely to face further charges when ASADA finally gets its act together.
  23. Melbourne and Hawthorn had two close encounters during the 1964 home and away season and both were significant to the club's premiership aspirations. They first met at the MCG on 23 May and the Demons won narrowly in front of 53,798 fans. Melbourne 3.3.21 5.9.39 9.11.65 10.13.73 Hawthorn 4.6.30 5.7.37 9.8.62 10.8.68 THE TEAM B: Neil Crompton Bernie Massey Graeme Jacobs HB: Tony Anderson Brian Roet Brian Leahy C: Brian Dixon "Hassa" Mann Frank "Bluey" Adams HF: Bryan Kenneally Ray Groom Barrie Vagg F: Ron Barassi Barry Bourke John Townsend FOLL: Bob "Tassie" Johnson Graham Wise Ken Emselle 19/20: Maurie Bartlett Herb Matthews Goals Graeme Jacobs Barrie Vagg 3 Ron Barassi 2 Barry Bourke Bryan Kenneally Best J Townsend Brian Roet Tas Johnson Ray Groom Ron Barassi Barrie Vagg It was a battle of defences all day with Graeme Jacobs capping off a good day at the half way mark of the final term with his third goal of the day which turned out to be the sealer.
  24. Here's the Inside Football (best football newspaper) Top 20 from Brett Anderson (a good Melbourne man):- 1. Brisbane Lions Patrick McCartin (Geelong Falcons) 193cm, 95k Powerful, strong marking forward who is a competitive beast. Has played only one TAC Cup game (4 games) having been on the AIS tour and recovering from a finger injury, but kicked three goals for Vic Country on Sunday. 2. Greater Western Sydney Sam Durdin (West Adelaide) 196cm, 87kg Versatile tall defender who can also play in attack. Returned recently from thumb injury and has played in Reserves and Foxtel Cup for the bloods and is head and shoulders SA's best draft prospect. 3. Richmond Peter Wright (Calder Cannons) 203cm, 102kg "Two metre Peter" has been a popular No. 1 pick for a while. He has kicked 17 goals in his past four matches in the TAC Cup, including six second-half goals against Geelong. Didn't have a great day against Vic Country. 4. St. Kilda Hugh Goddard (Geelong Falcons) 196cm, 93kg Cousin of Bomber and former Saint Brendon. Had 32 touches on Sunday. 9. West Coast Clem Smith (Perth) 177cm, 74kg Game-breaking running defender with great speed and a fierce attack on the ball/man. Played three games in WAFL league team averaging 16 possessions. 10. Collingwood (F/S) Darcy Moore (Oakleigh Chargers) 199cm, 93kg Son of former champion ruckman Peter. Has played forward and back for Oakleigh this year and has shown vast improvement in the past 12 months. Struggled on Sunday though. 11. North Melbourne Lachie Weller (Broadbeach) 180cm, 71 kg Brother of Saints player Mav. A clever inside midfielder with good speed and is damaging forward of centre. Played in the NEAFL for Gold Coast in 2013 and again this year. 12. Fremantle Corey Ellis (Western Jets) 185cm, 76kg Smart, left-footed inside midfielder who some clubs rate in the top 10. Geelong Jordan De Goey (Oakleigh Chargers) 187cm, 82kg Versatile midfielder/forward who reads the play well and is good overhead for his size. Averaging 18 possessions and seven marks a game in the TAC Cup this season. 15. Gold Coast Touk Miller (Calder Cannons) 175cm, 77kg Captain of Vic Metro who is a small, explosive midfielder/forward. Averaged 25 possessions and a goal a game in his first seven TAC Cup matches this season. 16. Sydney Swans (A/S) Isaac Heeney (Cardiff) 186cm, 81kg Swans academy member who is rated in the top handful of midfielders in this draft. Has played senior football in NEAFL and averages 31 disposals in TAC Cup. 17. Averaging 22 possessions and a goal a game this season. 18. Port Adelaide Jackson Nelson (Geelong Falcons) 187cm, 80kg Clever running defender who can also have stints in the midfield and did well as a bottom ager last year for Country. Averaging 20 disposals and five tackles for the Falcons. 19. Essendon (C/S) Tyler Keitel (East Perth) 194cm, 98kg Versatile forward who can take strong grab and can also play down back, but is better suited in attack. Has kicked 14 goals so far in six games in the WAFL colts. 20. Greater Western Sydney (C/S) Liam Duggan (Western Jets) 183cm, 76kg Exquisitely skilled left footer who can play at half back and through midfield. Averaging 23 possessions and four tackles a game in five matches for the Jets.
  25. Is Essendon really planning to take on ASADA in court because of a lack of process and unfairness due to delays in coming out with its report? How are they going to establish a basis in fact for anything when they're the organisation that ran the drug programme and have no records about it? Strange!
