I think the profit and loss figures show that it's more than just a matter of cleaning up the mess caused by one administration. The figures show it's far more deep seated and has been recurring through various administrations. The reality is that we need to have the whole club working together and not like a camp divided. The best outcome is one that allows for on field improvement as well as making good strides financially. That's PJ's challenge.

Bombers scandal: charged, <redacted> and <infracted>
Whispering_Jack replied to Jonesbag's topic in Melbourne Demons
I think you mean the Deakin University lecturer who I've made reference to in this thread on a few occasions. Apparently, not a bad barrister but he's one of those Essendon supporters who can see no wrong with anything the club's done in the past 3 or 4 years. Sad case. This is indeed extraordinary stuff in the context of the case that's about to come before the AFL Tribunal. Hardie isn't arguing whether the players were given TB4. Instead, he's arguing on its status and says ASADA needs to prove why this is so. Try reading between the lines as to why a barrister, law lecturer, former adviser to the Bombers and a confidant of Stephen Dank is coming from this angle? Mind boggling! -
Bombers scandal: charged, <redacted> and <infracted>
Whispering_Jack replied to Jonesbag's topic in Melbourne Demons
The AFL and ASADA must do everything necessary to ensure that the witnesses are available irrespective of whether they are reliable. If they don't then they might be challenged as to why they didn't take reasonable steps to have them there and the players representatives would no doubt seek to have inferences drawn as to why they didn't make such attempts. So yes - essentially dotting i's and crossing t's. -

For an individual in Charters' position - I believe it is. I understand you need to be licenced to bring in such products. -

2015 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch
Whispering_Jack posted a topic in Melbourne Demons
For completeness, we couldn't finish the 2014 trade and draft period without looking forward to the 2015 draft prospects. -
Well, we've moved on to another open training date and what should be the first session in which the full list (less those injured or in rehab) is available so, in many respects, the pre season is really on in earnest now. That also means we should have more people watching training, more reporting on it and everyone staying on topic please

Casey Scorpions - the off season
Whispering_Jack replied to dazzledavey36's topic in Melbourne Demons
I've always maintained that you need your aligned club to have its own playing group with sufficient strength to provide the right environment to enable the development of your own playing group and to also be successful in its own right. Casey failed in that regard for a number of reasons which led to its on field demise this year. Now that the drafts are over and a number of available players who missed out can be identified, it's up to the Scorpions to work hard on their recruiting and pick up at least 2 or 3 match toughened players with harder bodies that they lacked this year and the Demons have a responsibility to help them. I would also like to see Casey gain a bigger following in its own region. Some of the crowds at games I attended this year were abysmal which I suppose reflects on the standard of its football and also, the fact that it still hasn't been embraced by the local Cranbourne community since its move from Springvale a decade ago.- 129 replies

Bombers scandal: charged, <redacted> and <infracted>
Whispering_Jack replied to Jonesbag's topic in Melbourne Demons
Let's us just take it as fact for the moment that it's illegal to import a substance like TB4 into the country. Would you be keen to appear before a tribunal in which some of the main issues were - (i) whether you had prescribed TB4 to a football club for ingestion by its players as part of a supplements programme you had not only devised but helped put into practice? (ii) whether you had imported and sold TB4 to a sports scientist employed by a football club for possible use by its players as part of such a programme? (iii) whether you had compounded a substance including TB4 and then on sell it to a football club football club for possible use by its players as part of such a programme? I'm just trying to get my head around the possible reasons why some people might chose to not make themselves available at a hearing to determine whether players were guilty or innocent of taking a substance that's clearly banned under the WADA Code and the AFL anti doping code. This is especially so given that the people might previously have made statements which are available as evidence on tape concerning those matters. Then, let's just take it that the players have to prove to my comfortable satisfaction that they didn't ingest a banned substance and these witnesses could possibly provide a reasonable alternate explanation. Surely, the players and their advocates should be champing at the bit to ensure that these witnesses appear in order to clear their names and their reputations? Where are they providing the appropriate level of assistance to ASADA in achieving a satisfactory outcome if they are in fact found guilty and try to cut a deal? I'm struggling to work out how the ASADA case which has been overseen by a leading world anti doping figure and an eminent judge is said by some to be on the brink of collapse because some people don't want to turn up to give evidence that could help clear the players if they didn't take TB4. -
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CHRISTIAN PETRACCA
Whispering_Jack replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Why can't we just celebrate the fact that we have just drafted a player considered by the majority of AFL recruiters and many other judges of junior talent in the sport as the finest and best young player in the land? Why can't we then enjoy the fact that we have as coach of the club a man who is well paid and respected and who has in the past moulded some very good footballing talent into a premiership winning combination? Everything that happens in the future is entirely in the lap of the gods but for now we have just picked up Petracca, a handful of well regarded young talent and a few players of ability from other clubs, a couple who have performed well before at the highest level. They are what has been added to our list to help us move forward. That's the reality of the present and what we have now and in this current climate. -

Did I hear someone say that Dank was going to give evidence for the defence in the case against the 34 players at the Tribunal? I'd like to see that and I'd like to be on the team doing the cross examining. Please ... -

Whispering_Jack replied to Jonesbag's topic in Melbourne Demons
Don't get too excited Bub. it is not in ASADA's place to hand out penalties. The AFL Tribunal decides guilt and then hands out the appropriate sanctions to those parties who are guilty of any offences. ASADA/WADA can appeal to CAS but it can't penalise. -

Thanks for your input as well - as for "groupthink" (a) you use it often and in an inappropriate context, and (b) you used it in this thread when you responded to jabber after he asked you for an example of it. Happy to differ with you on this because he debate you produced in your evidence was sober and even if there was some rationalisation it bore no resemblance to the wrist slashing and emotional 180 degree turns noticed on the Saints' thread. You picked a poor example to use. Incidentally, I think the Saints did well in the draft and their fans should be happy with the outcome. -

... or that they're dealing with the same set of legal rules or evidentiary requirements ... and probably this is because much of the media is ignorant of the rules that apply in anti doping matters and they actually relay information told to them by people with vested interests which may not necessarily be correct. -

I followed the link expecting to see some evidence of "groupthink" about Sam Frost as a player and in particular, to find anything remotely resembling the hysterical about face of many Saintsational posters over McCartin's selection at # 1 instead of Petracca. Instead, I found some vigorous debate centred more on whether or not the deal struck for Frost was a good one for the club. Like some at the time, I thought we had possibly given away too much for the player but the outcome in terms of who we picked at 40 and 53 looks good to me at the moment. Of course, we won't know for some time. You really need to ditch this groupthink line. It means little in this context, does nothing to add to debate and anyway it's not borne out in the discussion you provided by way of example. -

Looks like the various recruiters didn't place a great amount of weight on his story. -
Mitch White, drafted in today's rookie draft was in the best players in two of the Stingrays' three TAC Cup finals (problem is I'm having trouble remembering him from the game I saw but that's probably because I simply wasnt focussing on him ).

Funny question coming from an esteemed member of the fraternity of barristers. I've seen you blokes lounging around the corridors outside courtrooms pretending to do important stuff like negotiating to settle cases etc. when you're really discussing who you should back in the fourth at Werribee or who's going to hold down a half back flank next year. If you blokes put your mind to it, you could better while away the idle hours of the day writing novels like Dostoyevsky and blokes like that if you really tried
