  1. For all our track & Casey watchers, how has he actually been going?

I saw him play live in each of our practise matches, but he looked more like he was finding he feet in those games rather than banging down the door for selection.

    Any insight appreciated.

  2. For those not following...

    Quote

Lisa Hannon (AFL): The act of jumping to smother ... carried not only the inherent risk of head high contact, but real potential to cause injury.

Hannon (AFL) says a combination of force, body positioning of Pickett at moment of impact and genuine potential to cause injury should see this graded 'medium' impact.

Anderson (Dees) says Pickett decelerates as he jumps for the ball and it is "a much less significant impact as a result."

Anderson (Dees) notes Pickett's fist wasn't clenched at the moment of impact, which is not consistent with a decision to bump.

Lachie Fogarty has in fact appeared at tonight's Tribunal, via vision of Jack Viney's bump on him from the 2023 Semi-Final.

    The Tribunal is now deliberating.

I will try break this down as best I can.

The Dees are arguing this is rough conduct but not a bump.

Basically, they argue impact should not have been upgraded based on potential to cause injury because it does not qualify as a bump in their view.

We have spent the last 40 minutes debating whether we allow evidence from a Professor Cole. The Tribunal finds it will not have a meaningful impact on the crux of this case.

Effectively, these first 40 minutes have been a prelude.

  4. I hope the tribunal pay more attention to the actual vision, which shows both players heading in the same (not opposite) direction and towards the ball.

If you hadn't seen the incident and were just looking at the still pictures above (like most of the 'expert' armchair commentators out there), it looks like Kossie is jumping into Soligo and putting his elbow right though his head, which didnt happen.

One other point on the Kossie incident. I cannot fathom those who are saying " he needs to get that out of his game" after this incident. Pickett jumped in the air to smother the ball. He did not leave the ground intending to bump as he did against Smith and Cripps.

Smothering is inherently dangerous but you don't win football matches without it.

Those people criticising Pickett are probably also lauding Tom Sparrow, who leapt to smother the ball before the Petracca goal.

The optics of challenging the suspension is the problem in my view, as words to the effect of the above are exactly what the Filth used in their defense of Maynard.

We all strongly disagreed with that at the time. To come out now and argue the opposite wouldnt be a good look.

Pies got crucified by the umps.
Free kicks were Saints 30 Pies 15.

Higgins goal from the 3rd row was a nail into the pies hearts.
     Umps were shocking.

Pies were massacred by the umps.

    It was beautiful to watch

    🤣🤣😊😊🤣🤣😊😊

I'm not the guy in the pic but I was also at game in my Melbourne gear, cheering the Saints on.

Collingwood fans are hilarious and I'm convinced half have no idea what they are watching.

Also particularly enjoyed when they went the early crow not once but twice with their stupid chant, only for half on them to be on their way out the door a few Saints goals later.

Re Higgins' goal... looks in to me!  😎

Lots of posters are bewildered by Tommo being dropped after playing well.  But if we all noticed he played well, surely the selection panel did too.  There must be reasons other than the club is insane.  (I've no idea what they could be.)

It's happened often, most notably for me being after the KB last year, where he had a great game.

Following week we had the bye, then week after that he was omitted for Petty.

  8. Sorry it's already been said.  I'm too grumpy to go through a thread that will no doubt make me grumpier.

Unrelated to the game itself, but I am calling absolute shenanigans on the 40,000 crowd figure.
The place holds 48,000 when full and it was clear on the TV for the entirety of the game that there were empty blue seats everywhere.

As a comparison, the Buddy 1,000 goals game only had 36,000 and that night it looked packed.

Are the powers that be so desperate for this opening round "northern states invasion" [censored] to be seen as a success that they'd artificially bump the crowd number?

    Team selection

we have 3 new players. But only 2 without senior experience.
the selection of Billing’s is not a problem

    but

    we have 2 total newbies

Caleb Windsor early selection last year, surely it is only clubs in dire straits that pick their first selection in the opening game.  Or is he that good.  Why did he not go earlier. Maybe JT has pulled another.

Blake Howes been in our club for a year or so , we can assume natural improvement,

    good luck both,

Sheet , I hope these two go OK, and Billings has a good one,  Go Dee’s

Same as last year really, where we went in with Hunter and first gamers McVee & Laurie

Searched ticketmasters for guaranteed GA admission for members and other tickets, it indicated that no tickets were available.

    Must be a sell out.

Looks like it is a pub for me. I guess better than going at 9.30 on a Sunday morning (family day fixture).

Anyone have any ideas about how to get into Ikon for the game?

Given the hot evening, I would assume plenty with tickets won't be turning up. A sell out, with plenty of spaces available.

I hope its not.  I didnt bother upgrading as figured it'd be fine to just turn up and scan in.  Tonights game between the Filth and the Tigers had heaps of empty seats, so surely we wouldn't get a much bigger crowd than that tomorrow.....  right?   😱

Blimey, that's almost as long as one of my shorter posts.

    More informative too.

But seriously, that's what we should be getting. Basic level of professional information.

I went to the mfc website this arvo to buy a ticket for tommorow. No doubt the info is there somewhere, but I couldn't find it and gave up after 5 mins.

    Not good enough.

Struggled to find it on the afl site too but did.

    It's here:

This is 5 mins from my place. You need to be early. One tip is to hit bottom of sydney road west side at 6:01pm when the clearway ends. Heaps of parks, and a 1-2 tram stops back down to IKON. Unless you have pre-game committments that's my hot tip. Parking over east side of IKON is a mix of permit, 2hr and full. Royal parade itself if you get lucky.

I appreciate your first post here being used to give such excellent advise - thanks! 👍

To everyone saying we have to stop bombing into the forward 50, but they think we're a tall forward or two short down there, we can't have it both ways. The tall forwards want the ball coming in high or so they can get a run and jump at it.

Everyone saying we need to lower our eyes and hit up targets, means forget the tall forwards, just play smaller guys and look for them to lead to space/ball carrier. Which by the sounds of it no one wants that either.

    Welcome to Demonland 🤣

  14. I'm the NZ'er from the other thread who moved to Melbourne in mid-1999 and settled on Melbourne as my team a few weeks into the following season.

My partner (now wife) was initially thrilled that I had come from a country that knew nothing about AFL and was hopeful that I wouldn't become obsessed with the game, get a membership, put stickers on my car and either watch games on TV all weekend or go to see them live.

Long story short, after realising there was absolutely zero chance of me not going full AFL-nerd, she took me along to see the round 3 game between Collingwood v Carlton, figuring that'd be a good introduction to live AFL.

My lasting memory of it was how loud and involved the crowd was throughout the game, which is something I'd never experienced before at live sport events in NZ (rugby, league or cricket).

(Sav Rocca monstering the Carlton backline and kicking 6 almost got me over the line as a filth supporter too, but the less said about that the better... 🤢🤢🤮)

Needless to say, that game got me hooked on watching AFL live and wanting to see more.

We had to go away for a while after that, so my first Melbourne game (by which point I had finally settled on the Dees as my team) wasnt until a couple months later in round 14, also vs Collingwood, where the Wiz kicked 9 and we smashed them by 65 points.

I've barely missed a Dees game in Melbourne since!  😎

  15. Moved to Melbourne from NZ in mid-1999.

Hard core rugby fan, but realised pretty quickly I'd be an outcast in this town if I didn't follow the game and choose a team.

Spent rest of the year learning what the sport was about and resisting recruitment attempts from Carlton, Collingwood & Essendon supporters.

Entered a tipping competition in season 2000, still undecided.

Settled on Melbourne a few weeks into the season cause I liked the colours, the themesong, the Demons name, loved Jeff Farmer, they were fun to watch and it annoyed the @#$% out of my friends who followed aforementioned teams.

    Won tipping competition.

Got 3 tickets to each week of the finals, including Grand Final.

(should have been 6 tickets, but I choked in the last round and half to split 1st prize with someone else 😭 )

Brought my Mum over from NZ and we saw the Dees play in 3 out of 4 weeks at the G.

    Solidified my/our hatred for Essendon.

Signed my Mum up as a member, and she now comes over every year for a couple of games.

For the most part I now find rugby boring as hell, except internationals involving the All Blacks.

My Mum, who still lives in NZ is a full AFL convert and likes it more than rugby too. When telling her friends about the teams she follows and the teams she hates, she refers to Collingwood as "the filth".
