It’s even worse than that. Or at least designed to confuse. Around the ground, at throw ins or ruck contests, the rucks are not allowed to hit the ball out on the full. However, they can hit the ball towards the boundary line – you will get a lot of players appealing for a free kick because of this. It gets more difficult when umpires decide to throw the ball up right next to the goals. Obviously, you cannot hit the ball through on the full, however, you should be able to hit it towards the goal if one of your players is there. The problem with this is that it could well be decided that you were rushing the ball through, and a free kick awarded against.

There is obviously a development issue at play with several players who are not getting played in their positions or getting a decent run at it - that does not change depending on what level of skill the player has – and the football department needs to improve.

Not sure what any of this has to do with McVee? With respect to Max though I don’t believe that he is stopping the development of a younger player – that has been done by strange list choices when adding another 34 year old player to the list. It was a strange choice, as when Max has been injured in recent history, he is always replaced by a part timer or two – Petty, JVR, Fullerton…I can’t believe that TC would ever be given a run in the AFL team this year except under extreme circumstances. After two years on the list at Casey, Verrall was finally ready to hold the main position in the VFL. He has shown this by dominating at VFL level whenever TC is not playing – several games of 30+ hitouts/ 20+ possessions/ 10+ clearances/ score involvements etc. I believe his confidence and output would have grown inmeasurably if left in the position for an extended period. Instead he has been left to play 30–40 minutes of games as the coaches appear to think that TC is about to make his MFC debut. This is not the way to develop future players who need experience and feedback in their position.This is one example, but there are examples in every position. Is it the FD? The head coach? The VFL coach? It only makes sense if the FD knows that they are receiving a ready-made player at the end of the year. Hopefully they can work with Max.

They finished off okay but were miles off for most of the day. But nothing’s ever as bad or as good as it seems at first. JVR showed some good finishing skills in the last quarter. The halfback line needs to go for some more challenging kicks rather than taking up time chipping around defensive 50. When I see this I think that teens are just trying to limit the damage – I guess they didn’t kick 100 points today so that was probably a reason.

I’m a huge fan of Max, and especially today he was a class above everybody else. The only problem is that I don’t think he should be getting 17 kicks and 10 handballs. Probably should be the other way around if the running players are awake and have a plan to run past for the handball.

Wouldn’t be a bad idea to swap Turner forward and JVR back. Also, this is the perfect match where they should have had 4 substitute umpires on the bench. At least three of them should’ve been dragged by now. Have an umpires coach on the bench and take them through the vision to see the error of their ways.
