There’s a lot more to recruiting that meets the eye. The top recruiters spend a great deal of their time on due diligence, interviewing the players they fancy, their families, coaches, school teachers etc in order to establish as thorough a profile of their target as possible. I don’t have that information but on what I’ve seen of his footy skills and prowess, I would be happy to see his name come up at pick 6 if that indeed, is our first pick on Monday night.

Yes, we are told that. But it seems that process is gone through then the best footballer is picked. So, question: if Johnny from Wangaratta comes from a terrible family situation and wagged school is ranked equally in football terms with Nigel from Scotch college from an unblemished professional family and topped Latin, are you going with Johnny or Nigel? I think I'm going with Johnny as there should be more upside.

To their very great credit, some of our most outstanding players have come from extremely challenging backgrounds and, despite stumbles, have emerged really great people.

  2. Someone needs an atlas or a new travel agent.

Melb Perth is 2,700 km. Perth Esperance 600km. Round trip 6,600 km.

I don't think our correspondent is up for a Pulitzer prize.

I think he now has 3 VFL best and fairest awards, and a third place finish, in his last 4 seasons at VFL level.

So he'd be a welcome addition to Casey in terms of quality and he would - at the least - threaten AFL selection. With the departure of Hibberd, Jordan, Dunstan and Harmes, we have lost some of the depth that drives standards and potentially fills gaps.

I agree we need to make the case. But I suspect the case is pretty easy. $90k plus match payments is better than VFL payments. Plus a second life line to for an AFL career at a probable finalist is one last change to roll the dice on the dream, that was taken away by an ACL, a broken collarbone and a quad the first time.

He played 14 games in his first AFL season. Combined with consistently being the best player in his VFL team I reckon he would back himself in to be AFL capable and live that dream. And if he didn't, we wouldn't really want him on the list anyway.

He only needs to be picked in AFL team once to maybe get a premiership medal.

Think about what you’re saying. The club clearly only rate him as rookie worthy, otherwise they’d have made it work.

I love the romance of father/sons and have a connection to the Brown family through my local footy club. I’d love nothing more than for him to make it.

But the reality, as I’ve tried to hint at a few times from watching him play personally a number of times, is that he’s unlikely to have enough AFL level attributes to make it at that level. There’s a reason not a single expert has him in their top 50 rated prospects.

Would love nothing more than to be proved wrong but some people need to temper their expectations.

Exactly. Let's hope he proves us wrong. His contribution in his appearances for Casey this year were very modest but he apparently did well for Vic metro.

He will now have his opportunity which is justified.

All too late, but I was surprised that the biomechanical evidence wasn't challenged.

Sure, once he had left the ground, his trajectory was ballistic, and he couldn't alter it. But actually, the trajectory of his centre of mass was ballistic. He was perfectly able to reconfigure his body around that centre of mass - he chose to go into a bump configuration. He could have done otherwise.

NRL has eliminated the kicker being flattened like Gus was.

That "expert" evidence was inexpert. And barely challenged. Maynard's intent was to collect Brayshaw.

    Been watching some 2021 games.

Thee is no doubt we played with more freedom in 2021. We were extremely unselfish and looked for other players nearly every time. Lots of pats on the back, helping players up when they were on the ground, stepping in when an oppo player was trying to be tough etc

That care for our team mates and 'selflessness' disappeared in 2023. Maybe the 2021 hub was conducive to playing like that but thats what we have to get back to.

Bit unfair. Smith helped Weitering up.

Am I missing something here ?
Max is the ONLY one that I have seen so far that has admitted that there are some issues that need addressing. Yes, he said that the culture is pretty good BUT there are some things that need to be looked at. That is a helluva lot more than Goodwin & Pert said. They just kept the line going about great culture & nothing to see here.
As for May: FFS, he was at a CLUB function, having had a few beers (by his own admission when he was interviewed at the time) and made a comment from the heart to HIS people (not the general football public), If not then, when the hell CAN he say something ?  He has now said "okay, probably could have chosen my words better" which should appease all the butt hurt [censored] out there. If not, WGAF ?
At the end of the day, the proof will be in the pudding, but slagging off players for actually answering questions ain't helping anyone.

There was absolutely no problem with May making those comments. And, as you say, particularly in that company.

SNAPSHOT: “A mercurial small forward with a deep bag of tricks, Lance Collard is one of Western Australia’s most exciting prospects, with his ability to create something from nothing.”

West Coast NGA product Lance Collard shapes as one of the more interesting names in this draft class. A top-end talent with some freakish highlights, the Subiaco star is a classy, high-octane small forward, demonstrating similar traits to Bobby Hill or Shai Bolton with his ability to change a game.

After an injury interrupted bottom-age campaign, Collard hit the ground running in 2023, booting 15 goals in the first six games, including a six-goal bag in the WAFL Colts Super Round to earn selection in the West Australian Under 18 squad.

Collard had an indifferent National Carnival, playing forward in a struggling side, but he showed glimpses of his talents, booting two last-quarter goals against Vic Country to almost spark his state to an upset victory.

Returning to Subiaco, the 18-year-old enjoyed a dominant finals series, booting 10 goals across two games to almost lead the Lions further into the postseason off his own boot. He finished the campaign with 32 goals across 11 Colts games to average the most majors of any small forward in the competition.

    STRENGTHS:

    + Aerial ability
    + Agility
    + Forward craft
    + Finishing
    + Speed
    + X-factor

    IMPROVEMENTS:

    - Consistency
    - Discipline
    - Opposite foot

Very hard to learn to kick with other foot at that age...just saying.

  9. Generally just a blood test now. So easy. I think a lot of men were put off by the traditional test. As for the bowel cancer test they send out. Finally got around to it. So easy !

You owe it to not only yourself but your loved ones.

    Do it NOW.

    Don't think, DO.

Brody might have been fit but do we know it he was willing?

Schache only needed to take a mark near goal really or shepherd Clarry’s kick through!

I watched his last games for Casey. He lifted and definitely looked like someone trying hard to get in the ones. And why wouldn't he, demons were a big chance for a premiership and every player covets those !

    And thank christ for that.

I have no idea why it has taken so long for the club and the Brown family to be united on the wisdom of this.

But I did have a chat to dad Nathan at training during the school holidays when Kynan joined in with most of our sessions and he was your typically proud father sitting well back observing from under a tree on the Punt Rd side of Gosch's, but one well aware of the difficult road ahead.

For those of you too young to remember, Nathan was one of the fittest blokes going around in the early naughties and provided great run off half-back and had some memorably duels with Stephen Milne and other small forwards.

He wasn't a thumping kick but he was mega courageous and my guess is that his son is imbued with the same qualities which were pretty much on display all year for Oakleigh and Vic Metro.

His dad told me Kynan's much faster than him and a better kick and can play inside as well which basically means he's well worth drafting. Given the lack of hype around him, it does sound like he will go just after our pick 42, which is a bonus.

Delisting Kye Turner gave us four picks and hence three draftees plus Kynan would be a good result.

In my experience, men that could play tell everyone within earshot their sons are better, those of us that were not so good tell our sons that we were better and definitely braver.

Saw Kynan play, has ability...congrats to all.

You mean the ruck forward that we didn’t play for a single minute, when sub in the Semi, even though Tom Mac was possessionless in the second half and couldn’t even get to a forward half ruck contest?

FD obviously think he is a good option!

Please don't remind me. And a fit Grundy watching from the stands.

But was Nick Riewoldt jumping on top of Joel?

I guess that all depends n whether he was going to drown  without help or not?  Swimming with a dislocated shoulder can be challenging.

It seems I have upset everyone by saying "saved his life" might be a little dramatic.

So I retract and humbly apologise to all offended.

I admit the bloke would have definitely died. Painfully. Now fully recovered.

JFK performed a similar feat in WW2 near Bouganville and they made him president. So, I say, Roffey , you are out.

    A Jack, a Tom and a Shane.

    We're so deelightfully old school!

(To ice this, I was hoping there was a Tom to join Jack Mueller (39,40,41,48) and Shane McGrath (41,48) in their premiership teams. Alas, there wasn't. 1900's Tommy Ryan and our TMac, who's been around seemingly forever anyway, must suffice.)

Nice bloke jack Mueller...used to say "how good would I have been with 5 fingers". ( Only had 3 on one hand.

I believe kicked 8,6 and 6 goals in the PF,GF and GF replay in 48?
